So after 100 games the Blue Jays are 45 - 55 (.450) and 14.5 games back in the division and 11.0 games back in the wild card race. And here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) Games 71 - 80: 6 - 4; 7.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 5.0 games (June 29) Games 81 - 90: 4 - 6; 10.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (July 10) Games 91 - 100: 1 - 9; 14.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 11.0 games (July 24) collapse: col-lapse' verb 1. To give way; cave in. 2. To fail utterly; come to naught. Coming into these past ten games, I thought the Jays might actually be able to do something. And they did. They came up with the worst record in ten games in all these past ten game sets. 1 and 9. That is remarkably bad. This is the record of a team that appears to have given up, that has failed utterly, that has collapsed. As gmen81 noted in an earlier post, the eleven game win streak seems but a distant memory. But, unfortunately, the season continues. The next ten games see the Jays play the A-list: the Astros (.340), the Athletics (.480) and the Angels (.475). Given the equally poor record of these three teams, it's possible the Jays could have a healthy win-loss record in these games. But it won't matter because of the hole they're in. Still, that Jays/Angels series might be interesting in a macabre way: two teams with high payrolls who were supposed to do big things this year and, instead, fizzled. Maybe the loser of that series can be given a crate of shaken cola. -

14 - 5 ???? Really???? This has gotten embarrassing. Is anyone even watching these games anymore? -
Whitecaps 1 LA 2 A missed opportunity. Caps win that game and they're in second place, two points behind RSL with a game in hand. Instead, they lose and they're in fourth place behind the Galaxy. Sigh. Caps were actually lucky. I thought it could have been 3-0 LA in the first ten minutes. Don't know why they came up with a dud of a game. Maybe it was the Beckham mojo that spooked the Caps? Nice goal by Camilo though. (And, to be fair, a clever goal by Zardes.) But where was Kenny Miller?
-
Um.....er.....I thought it missed Zardes. [ducks]

So after 90 games the Blue Jays are 44 - 46 (.489) and 10 games back of Boston and 6.5 games behind in the wild card race. Here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) Games 71 - 80: 6 - 4; 7.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 5.0 games (June 29) Games 81 - 90: 4 - 6; 10.0 games back (Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (July 10) A disappointing ten games, no doubt about it. I thought they could do some damage against the Central Division but they couldn't. And they're steadily falling back in the wild card race from 4.5 games back on June 18th to 5.0 games back on June 29th to 6.5 games back today. Not a good sign at all. The next ten games sees the Jays finish off their series against Cleveland and then they have three games against Baltimore, three against the Rays, and three against the Dodgers, with the All-Star break thrown in the middle of them. If the Jays are going to make any move in the standings they have to start beating their divisional opponents. These games against Baltimore and Tampa would be a good place to start. -
Called up to play for Canada in the Gold Cup tournament. The tournament starts on Sunday.

Caps 1 KC 1 An entertaining game capped by another brilliant free kick goal by Camillo. He's tied for second in the league in scoring. Not bad, not bad at all. Don't want to nag, but has Kenny Miller sort of faded in these last few games or have I just missed something? Anyways, big game coming up on Saturday. Caps are overdue to beat Seattle. DO IT!

Where do you find stats like these on the web? I'm interested in these odd stats - like what is the most runs made up in the ninth inning to win a game. Thanks. -

So after 80 games, the Blue Jays are 40 - 40; .500; 7.5 games back of Boston and 5.0 games behind in the wild card race. And here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) Games 71 - 80: 6 - 4; 7.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 5.0 games (June 29) So they managed to gain one game in the division, but lost a half a game in the wild card race. It's difficult to make up ground after they dug themselves into such a huge hole. But the season is only half over (just about) so there's still plenty of games left. The next ten see one more (important) game against Boston, then nine against the AL Central - four against the Tigers, three against the Twins and two against the Indians. I think the Jays could do some damage here and make up some of the lost ground. -
Caps 1 DC 0 Not the most exciting game to watch, but a win is a win. Now, on to Kansas to see if they can make it four in a row!
-
Good one.

In the third quarter, after the Lions had scored two touchdowns, on their third possession Lulay came up a bit short on a run and it was third and less than a yard. The ball was in the Lions half of the field, so they punted. I was hoping they'd go for it. They had the momentum, and if they could have scored on that possession it could really have shook up the Stamps. Instead, the Stamps got the ball and marched it down the field for a touchdown. I guess you can't fault the decision since it was probably the 'sensible' one. But sometimes I think a coach should take a chance and just roll with it. No matter. In the CFL - where eight teams play eighteen games each to eliminate two teams - each single game is almost an exhibition game. What counts is how the team is playing near the end of the season.

Terrific game by Dickey. And now, four sort-of-important games against Boston. Should be fun. -

Especially since it came off O'Day who had mouthed off at Bautista yesterday! -
Vancouver 3 Chivas 1 Okay, granted it was only Chivas. But a 3 - 1 win is a 3 -1 win. And three points in the standings are three points in the standings. Which are good enough to get the Caps, for the time being, into a playoff position. Nice win.

So after 70 games the Blue Jays are 34 - 36; .486; 8.5 games back in their division and 4.5 games back in the wild card race. And here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60: 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 8.5 games (June 7) Games 61 - 70: 8 - 2; 8.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 4.5 games (June 18) A terrific ten games, best of the season so far. The disappointing thing is that, even going 8 - 2, they were only able to make up two games on Boston. The good thing is that they made up 4 games (!) in the wild card race. All is not lost. Their next ten games see one game against the Rockies, and then three games apiece against the Orioles, Rays and Boston. If they can keep up this momentum and have another good ten game series (say 7 - 3), they could really make a move in their division, not to mention in the wild card race. This next week and a bit could be very interesting. -
And one other thing while I'm thinking of it: I don't think we need in-game interviews with the coach. It seems pointless to me, other than showing what a nuisance media people can be. I can wait for the intermission or post-game to hear what Rennie thinks of Miller's play. Let the coach coach and don't bother him.
-
You're right. And the ref made the correct call. But I think the rule should be changed. A penalty shot and a red card strikes me as too harsh for one foul. It's like in hockey - if a player has a break on net and an opposing player takes him down, either a penalty shot OR a two minute penalty is assessed depending on how clear cut the breakaway was. But not both. If the penalty takes place outside the box, give the offending player a red. If the penalty takes place inside the box, give the offending player a yellow and give the penalty shot.

Whitecaps 4 NE 3 Weird game. Funny how one play can change the whole game. The take-down of Miller in the penalty box turned what looked like a laugher for NE into an eventual win for the Caps. Have to say, though, that I think that a penalty shot AND a red card for one foul is a bit much. Give the player a yellow if you're going to give the penalty shot. Terrific game by Miller. It's a win, but it's still not a win that fills you with confidence. The Caps, even with the extra man, were scrambling at the end. That game could easily have ended in a draw. Once again, the Caps seemed to lose their offensive direction entering the second half with a goal lead. I'm tempted to blame Rennie for that, but he seemed to want the team to keep on the offensive - look at the subs he made in the second half. Maybe the team just starts playing defensively on its own. But it *is* a win, for all that, and a needed 3 points.
-
Whitecaps 2 Seattle 3 Could've been a big win. Could've been an acceptable draw. Instead it's a disappointing loss. A waste of a great effort by Camillo. Interesting to see how the Sounders, when they got the lead, didn't go into a defensive shell and let their opponents take potshots at their goal. As a Caps fan, I'm not used to seeing that. Credit to the Seattle fans - 50,000+. Good to see. And somewhere, Alain Rochat is laughing.

It's the way they dropped in the wild card race that has me concerned. After 50 games they were 6.5 games back in the wild card race. After 60 games, they're 9.0 games back. I suppose one could argue that, if they could drop three games in a ten-game stretch, they could just as easily rise three games in the next ten-game stretch. But there are so many teams ahead of them, all playing each other, that makes it very hard to make up much ground. But we can always hope. -

Back at the start of the season, when the Blue Jays got off to a bad start, a common remark was that it was early in a very long season and people shouldn't panic. In fact, I heard some of the talking heads say that you really don't know what kind of team you have until about sixty games into the season. Well, it's sixty games into the season. Off-hand, I'd say the Blue Jays aren't a very good team. Maybe we should wait for a hundred games before panicking? -

So after 60 games the Blue Jays are 26-34 (.433) and are 10.5 games back of Boston and 9.0 games back for the wild card. Here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCGB: 1.5 games (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 3.5 games (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 7.5 games (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCGB: 6.5 games (May 26) Games 51 - 60 5 - 5; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCGB: 9.0 games (June 7) They played .500 ball in these last ten games against some pretty good teams, but .500 isn't going to make up any ground in the standings. In their next ten, the Jays have six (!) games against the Rangers, 3 against the White Sox, and one game against the Rockies. The Rangers are a good team but the Jays, as shown today, can beat them. The White Sox and the Rockies are no great shakes. This might be a group of ten in which the Jays have a winning record and maybe even move up a bit in the standings. -
New York 1 Whitecaps 2 How 'bout that! Okay, so the Red Bulls were down one man on a dubious second yellow card but so what, we'll take it!
