Whitecaps 2 Montreal 2 Yet another game where the Caps played well, had their chances, but just couldn't get the job done. This seems to be a recurring theme with this team. It's a shame - an entertaining game but a very disappointing result, again.

Man, you're fast. But thanks. I just picked up on that myself. D'oh.
-
Oops. Never mind. I just noticed that Week 7 (which is their bye week) is missing so there are only 18 games spread over 19 weeks.

I'm looking at the Lions 2013 schedule at the CFL website: http://www.cfl.ca/schedule/year/2013/1 and it shows 2 exhibition games and *19* regular season games. Is this a mistake or did the CFL increase the season from 18 games to 19 games?

So after 50 games the Jays are 21 - 29 (.420) and last in their division. Here's how they got there: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCB: 1.5 games back (Apr 12) Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCB: 3.5 games back (Apr 22) Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCB: 7.5 games back (May 3) Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCB: 6.5 games back (May 14) Games 41 - 50: 5 - 5; 9.5 games back (NY/Boston); WCB: 6.5 games back (May 26) Going .500 in a ten game stretch isn't going to do it. They're just spinning their wheels. They have to get on a heavy-duty roll. The upcoming ten games probably are not going to start that roll. They have four games against the Braves (at .625 and the third best record in MLB); two games against the Giants (who are, after all, the World Series holders); one game against the Texas (at .653 and the best record in MLB). They're probably going to have to sweep their three games against the Padres to have any hope of finishing above .500 in this ten game set. -
Whitecaps 2 Portland 2 That's too bad. To allow a late goal like that and throw away two important points in the season. So about a third of the way through the season and the Caps are 3-4-4. Somehow they seem like a better team than their record indicates.

Whitecaps 0 Montreal 0 Not a bad result for the Caps, all things considered. I didn't think either team seemed all that interested for the first 75 minutes or so. One or two chances at either end, but marked mainly by some very careless challenges by the Impact. But then it seemed as though the Caps decided that a scoreless draw was something to protect. Which seemed odd to me. You're playing a style that has held your opponents scoreless for 75 minutes. What could be better, defensively? But then, in the last 15, you change the style, drop most of your players back, and let your opponents turn your end of the field into a shooting gallery. Yes, it worked. This time. But man, the Impact looked awfully dangerous in those last 15 minutes. I really don't understand that type of change to a "defensive strategy" when what you had been playing had been working so well. Anyways, get Montreal back here in a couple of weeks, score a couple of goals and win on your home turf, and move on.

So after 40 games and a quarter of the season the Blue Jays find themselves 9.5 games back in the pack. How did they get here? Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 ; 1.5 games back (Boston/NY); WCB: 1.5 games back Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 ; 5.5 games back (Boston); WCB: 3.5 games back Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 ; 10.5 games back (Boston); WCB: 7.5 games back Games 31 - 40: 6 - 4; 9.5 games back (Yankees); WCB: 6.5 games back They finally have a winning record over a ten game stretch. Hopefully this streak continues. The next 10 games includes three games each against the Yankees, Rays and Orioles. If the Jays could win each of those series, they could start to climb out of the hole they've dug for themselves. -
Koffie did make a nice play and it was good to see some chemistry between the Caps' offensive players. Too often the goals seem to be single-player performances. Can you imagine a give-and-go goal between, say, Camilo and Mattocks? I have a hard time doing so. Too often many of the midfielders and forwards seem out-of-sync with one another, as if they're on different teams. As far as LA's goal, I thought Cannon looked flat-footed on it. It was by no means a dominating performance by the Whitecaps. In fact, hands up whoever thought, after LA scored, that the Caps were going to blow it by giving up a second goal? I know I did. But what the heck, it was a win, so I'm going to enjoy it.

Whitecaps 3 LA 1 Whitecaps win a MLS game! Whitecaps beat LA! Whitecaps score 3 goals in a MLS game! This is unchartered territory, folks! A good (and necessary) win. Who would have thought the play of the game would be Kobayashi spraining his ankle and having to be replaced by Russell Teibert. Give the kid credit, he took advantage of his opportunity. And how refreshing to see a Caps player being able to finish his chances. Mattocks gets a goal that maybe gets him started & a terrific game by O'Brien and Reo-Coker. But it was important that they won today because their next three MLS games are away games in Portland, New York and Seattle and they have two Championship series games against Montreal. All tough games. But worry about them when they come and let's enjoy the win for the next couple of days.
-
RSL 2 Whitecaps 0 What a surprise - the Caps have trouble scoring. Some nice build-ups that result in absolutely nothing. Very frustrating to watch. That's nine goals in nine MSL games. So the Caps are stumbling and bumbling thru the season thus far. The Canucks are down 2 - 0 in their series. The Blue Jays are imploding. When does the Lions season start?

And the beat(ing) goes on: Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 1.5 games back Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 5.5 games back Games 21 - 30: 2 - 8 11 games back The next ten games sees four games against the Rays and yet another three games against Boston, with two more against Seattle and a game against the Giants. This could get beyond ugly. -

A rather pessimistic article in "Sports Illustrated" about the Jays chances of making the playoffs: http://mlb.si.com/2013/04/29/toronto-blue-jays-ra-dickey-slow-start/?xid=nl_siextra "Since 1995, the first year that the postseason included wild card entrants, only six teams have gone 11-15 or worse through their first 26 games and still made the playoffs. That’s six out of 146 (4.0 percent) who either won the division or a wild card spot." -

Blue Jays: 9 - 17 .346 Miami: 6 - 19 .240 Looks like the Blue Jays are winning the trade! -
Whitecaps 2 Dallas 2 An entertaining game, even with all the Dallas diving. How is it possible that Mattocks didn't score a hat trick let alone one goal? The Football Gods seem to have it in for the kid for the present. But he's got to start scoring soon, and when he does he could score a bunch. Some terrific energy and talent shown by Manneh. The team seemed threatening all game marred only by their habitual lack of finish - otherwise this could have been a blow-out. And that's what's so frustrating about this team. There seems to be oodles of talent on the team and many, many potential goals. But, thus far, they've been unable to deliver. But, at least for this game, they seemed to be clicking together even if there were a lot of missed chances. I hope Rennie keeps this same starting lineup together for a few games. It could pay off in a big way. (And having got the fans' hopes up, the Caps could very well come up with a dud game next week against Salt Lake.)
-
That's a pretty telling stat. But was the blow-up Rennie's decision or Lenarduzzi's? I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be much chemistry among the players on the field. Possibly this is due to Rennie's frequent line-up changes. But perhaps it indicates that we've got a poor mix of players. Which again might fall on Lenarduzzi. I'm a Lenarduzzi fan - have been since the NASL days - and I hope this team gets things turned around starting this afternoon. But if things don't start changing soon, it seems to me that some hard questions have to be asked about some of the player decisions that have been made.

To worry or not to worry? As I write, the Jays are 9 - 15 and, more importantly, 7.5 games back of Boston. Thing is, there are still 138 games left in their season. So, on the face of it, there is plenty of time for the Jays to recover in the standings. But is the large number of regular season games deceptive? Is there a point (15 games back? 20 games back?) where you can say with some certainty that the gap is simply too large to overcome regardless of a large number of games remaining, even if the team turns things around? -
I'm not sure what to make of this game. Perhaps the Caps were overconfident going in? But they pulled it out in the end, even if they were helped by being awarded a dubious penalty kick. One thing they briefly mentioned in the broadcast but wasn't clear to me: are away goals the tie-breakers in this series? I assumed this would be the case but by the way they were talking, perhaps that format isn't used in this series.

Baltimore 4 Jays 3 Too bad. One bad inning and the Jays lose the game. Of course, Oriole fans could say that one bad inning for them made the game close. Next! -

Well, they're consistent. After twenty games, the Jays are 8 - 12. Games 1 - 10: 4 - 6 Games 11 - 20: 4 - 6 But, somehow, I don't think this was the type of consistency anyone anticipated. Nine of the next ten games are against AL East teams, including three against Boston. If they maintain this type of 'consistency', things could start to unravel fast. -

Baltimore 2 Jays 1 Figures. One of the few bright lights thus far this season has been Kawasaki. So what does he do? He muffs the throw to first base that fills the bases and allows the O's to score and win the game with their next batter. Things have to start falling the Jays' way. Don't they? -
Dallas 2 Caps 0 Poorest effort of the season. Pretty much completely dominated by Dallas. As usual, the Caps were hardly a threat around the Dallas net. The one interesting thing arising from this game will be to see how the Caps respond in their re-match with Dallas next Saturday.

Yankees 5 Jays 3 Seems appropriate that the game ended with Lawrie striking out, being as how he was involved in two fielding miscues that resulted in four Yankee runs. And speaking of Lawrie: 5 games; 19 at bats; 0 runs; 2 hits (.105); 1 RBI; 9 strikeouts Let's hope he comes round soon. -

Jays 3 Sox 1 R.A. Dickey. Not bad. (Let's hope it's just a minor tweak that took him out of the game and not something more serious.)
