  1. I wouldn't. Defencemen are generally more of a risk than forwards. That's why it's so rare that you see the first overall pick go to a defencman. Erik Johnson also didn't help the case. He's had a pretty good career honestly, but compared to other first overall forward picks, not even close really. I wouldn't be surprised if Ekblad dropped to EDM. Seth Jones dropped to 4 and he was considered to be tied, if not given the edge for the first overall pick. Even Colorado, a team in need of defencmen, still didn't take the risk.
  2. I don't remember that at all. In fact I remember the opposite. I remember a large majority saying, something like "dang, makes sense for him to go to edmonton but dang, I really wanted him." In fact I was an Eakins supporter. (At least more than I was Tortorella) I noticed that's a pattern on this sight. Some people consistently bash CDC, or all the members of the forum often for really no reason. I don't understand why
  3. Well that was interesting while it lasted. Watch him sign a 1 mill deal with another team and put up 50 points on the season. I will laugh so hard if that happens
  4. I'll tell you how you do it. I made a thread in proposals with this idea, but I figured this would be an appropriate place to pitch this. You can flip Kesler for Reinhart, but in a 3 wee trade. To Van: 1st Overall, 10th Overall, Shea Theodore To Flo: Emerson Etem, Jason Garrison, 6th To Ana: Ryan Kesler, Jordan Schroeder We draft Reinhart, and see if Jake Virtanen falls to 10th. We walk out with 3 quality prospects. One Center, One Winger, One Defenceman. (PMD defenceman btw). It matches Torontos offer (Kadri, Phaneuf, 8th overall) to Florida but we have the benefits of being out of conference instead of in division, and who wants to take that Phaneuf contract. Anaheim gets Ryan Kesler and Jordan Schroeder, who doesn't add much value, but he makes the loss of Emerson Etem, a little more bearable. Every team comes out a winner and Benning gets the vancouver boys he liked and another one to boot. Oh yeah… but you still have to convince Garrison to waive…. But if he does...
  5. Whoever it is, it better be a defenceman. I say take the best defencman on the board. No way we are using out first on a defencman and our defensive pool isn't so hot. I actually like the idea above of taking Jack Glover.
  6. I like Schroeder, but he simply has just lost his spot. If we can't trade him. sign him as a pure depth player. We all know injuries are bound to happen. Then he can get his chance and maybe he still can find his game. Who knows, come training camp he could pull a santorelli and be a boss. I would have to imagine he knows he isn't getting many more chances, so I would assume it could light a fire under him. Schroeder's future is completely in his hands. He's undersized, but has major speed and skill. He just needs to put that package altogether.
  7. me as well. I just want to know other people's opinions. I figured it wasn't big enough to start a new thread though.
  8. So, if LA wins the cup, does John Stevens become the leading candidate for our head coach job?
  9. agreed one hundred and ten percent. When i first saw it I couldn't believe it. I thought it said Phaneuf, or Kadri, but both? Really? Then I thought they weren't putting their draft pick in the deal only to find out it was. Crazy talk. Florida comes out like a thief in the night with this exchange. Straight up highway robbery. I wonder how Toronto fans feel about that rumor. Oh and I too would be fine with Garrison Burrows and our 6th, but thats my limit. Anything more than than, and no thank you, I'll stick with the 6th pick. We could always trade those two for other pieces as well in separate trades.
  10. Seriously go get Reinhart. Hopefully he can replace Henrik when he steps down. He is actually everything we've been looking for in a forward minus a big huge physical game. I truly believe we will look back one day and say "Oh thank god Benning went and got this guy." Also, i would like to see us keep the pedigree going. Who knows, maybe Sam can talk his brothers Giffin and Max into maybe coming to Vancouver one day kind of like Eric Staal did with Jordan Staal. I know they did a trade but Jordan made it known he wanted to play with his brother in Carolina. We could see a similar thing with Sam not only because they're brothers, but it's also their hometown. I for one wouldn't mind either on them coming here, whether it be in a year or even 5 or 6. Both are pretty talented and it couldn't hurt having their brother try and talk them into coming to their hometown to play with him. It just seems like theres a million and a half reasons why he is a perfect fit for us. It seems very day we get closer to the draft, I find something that makes me say we really need this kid here. I know he's probably a great fit for pretty much every other team, but it seems too perfect for us to pass up.
  11. Right? If the price is any more than Garrison, Schroeder, and the 6th, then I'm definitely out. It's not like it's the 16th pick or something. It's the 6th pick. If we do nothing, we get Nik Ehlers, a man who put up 100 points in his first year in juniors. Yes, I want Reinhart as much as the next guy, but you don't gut your team of all depth, or create a huge whole, just to fill another one.
  12. That's not a crazy high asking price if you ask me. High, yes, but that was expected. 6th overall (high first) 3rd round (since it's 6th overall and not like 9 or 10, but hey, maybe they still want a second.) Established player. I hear they like Garrison so there you go. But i'f they are looking for a young forward, then that could lead to some problems. I don't think Jordan Schroeder counts does he? hahaha. But point is 6th overall, 2nd/3rd round, Jason Garrison for first overall? I think I could get behind that. If Linden and Benning think it's a good move, I will go ahead and trust them. edit: actually, Schroeder probably has equal value to a 2nd/3rd rounder or at least close. So 6th, Schroeder, and Garrison, could actually be a deal that gets done. I could see it happening.
  13. I don't think so. Edmonton is actually in a great spot at 3. Yes, they want Ekbald, but Drasaitl is also on their list. If Ekbald is taken by 3 they simply just take Drasaitl. It would be such a waste to package up Yak, a first overall pick, another third overall pick, and more just to get the first overall this year. Ekbald or not. It would be such a waste of assets. they could use yakupov in another package and get more than just a quality defencman. Yak to them is similar to Edler for us. We know they can be absolute studs, but for some reason they aren't. Yak still has potential to put up 70-80 points a season or more. Ekbald is worth a lot, but not tat much to them. They could even draft drasaitl, and use Sam Gagner as trade bait to bring in a quality defencman. Plus, they're the 3rd overall pick. Last year, Seth Jones who was ranked number 1, dropped to number 4. Same can be for Ekbald. Defensmen are usually a bigger risk than forwards, so GMs usually tend to take forwards unless the positional need is great enough or its obvious they are better than who's available. Honestly, Bennett, Reinhart, and Ekbald, are all similar in skill anyways. All I'm saying is Ekbald could very well drop to 3rd overall. It's not as crazy of a thought as a lot of people here seem to think. Edmonton will not trade for the number 1 pick because they will not offer a significant package. It just wouldn't make sense for them in the end really.
  14. I thought he played great in the olympics. I remember coming to the conclusion that it most likely was Torts fault because he played great. Kind of suspicious that he sucks, then plays well as soon as Torts isn't his coach, and then sucks again when he is. Torts is the kind of coach who needs certain players because he makes players adapt to him. Edler, and the Canucks for that matter, need a coach that adapts to them.
  15. Honestly, I know I will probably get flamed for this but is our D core really that bad anyway, or can you blame it on Torts? Honestly, we have 4 guys capable of being a top 4 dman, and that's not including Tanev. If you include Tanev than thats 5. Stanton, if you ask me had a quality rookie year despite his age, Corrado, who most people think will be ready enough to make the jump to 6th dman next year, and Weber who played well for his role. (we even used him as a forward for christ sake. I don't know what Torts was doing with him honestly.) But anyway, take the hypothetical that we make no moves involving our defense next year, which is highly unlikely. Hamhuis Tanev Garrison Bieksa Edler Corrado (Stanton Weber) One left shot and one right shot to fill in depth reasons. Do you guys think this group is garbage or can actually make an impact if they click? I honestly don't think it's that bad I think this group can get you to the playoffs, you just need a good coach that molds and adapts to the players rather than trying the players try to mold and adapt to him.
  16. People don't understand, you don't have to move all your tradable assets at draft day. Edler,Kesler, Garrison, Burrows, and pretty much all our tradable assets are not on a two day contract where we can't move them later on. Benning is trying to turn this team into a playoff team next year. If the team starts sucking again, we can still trade them. Because Edler won't be traded this offseason does not mean we're doomed. Linden is just taking a gamble, and a rather small one at that, in keeping him. Say he does bounce back and becomes an all star next season, rightfully so, all the fans will come crawling back to Edler who used to be in my personal top 5 favorite Canucks. But worst case scenario, say he does suck this year again, well if GMs still highly coveted Edler after 2 mediocre or worse seasons, they will probably still be there within a couple of months. Personally I wouldn't mind keeping him but only if it means keeping Kesler. (I'm not big on the trade Kesler bandwagon and apparently neither is Benning or Linden. Without him I'm not sure we make playoffs next year like Benning wants.) What I'm guessing is that means Garrison may be going out which honestly, would he waive his no trade? I mean he took a pay cut so he could play at home in Vancouver. 2 years into his contract, I'm not sure he waives, but hey maybe. Hopefully to florida, Buffalo, or Edmonton in a package for a top 3 pick
  17. Uh oh, not good news for people who want Kesler to stay. I guess trade Garrison? I really want the offseason to start. I want to see what moves are made
  18. I'll tell you how you get it done. --------------Trade 1---------------- To Buff: Edler, Higgins/Burrows, Schroeder, 3rd round pick Alex Edler - veteran defensman with all star potential if put in the right situation. Christian Ehrhoff wouldn't mind playing with Edler again. Chris Higgins/Alex Burrows - Another veteran forward to complement their young core. I'd prefer if they took higgins, but Burrows is still doable. Jordan Schroeder - 22 year old equal to a b level prospect to still add a young role player piece to their core. He's got a some games under his belt so he could make an impact if given the chance. (looks like the fans don't want him here anyway) 3rd Round - Just an added bonus to seal it. To Van: 2nd overall 2nd overall - Sam Reinhart. --------------Trade 2---------------- To Win: Markstrom, Hansen, 6th overall Jacob Markstrom - Winnipeg gets a 24 year old young goaltender who could potentially be their number 1 this season. The Winnipeg fans want Pavalec gone, and their not too hot on Montoya either. Yeah they could go to free agency, but it would be wise to take a 24 year old with that potential either way. Jannik Hansen - speedy third line veteran that can up his game if playing right. Last year he was one of our best players, just not so much this year. Still, on a fairly cheap contract, not bad 6th overall - Winnipeg drafts nik ehlers. Speedy skilled player who could make a major impact. Also from Denmark, can be mentored by Jannik Hansen. Also, Ehlers _____ Hansen, does look like a good speedy wing combo. To Van: Morrissey, 9th overall Josh Morrissey - Young puck moving defensman that Vancouver fans want so bad. Also, really good friends with Hunter Shinkaruk so they could feed off each other. 9th overall - Draft Virtanen. --------------End Result---------------- Canucks lose: Edler, Higgins/Burrows, Schroeder, Hansen, Markstrom Canucks gain: Reinhart, Virtanen, Morrissey. (Most importantly, while keeping Kesler like Benning wants.) Minor tweaks and I could see these happening.
  19. agree. You don't give anyone a spot. You give them a contract and they earn it. Any young guys that don't push themselves and earn a spot, too bad.

    Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

Gaunce is going to shock people with how well his game converts to the NHL level trust me. In the NHL smart quick offensive plays go a long way and being 6'2, 215 pounds doesn't hurt either. Personally, I was really impressed with him during camp last season. I think this summer, he is going to work as hard as possible. I've seen interviews and when asked about Bo Horvat, you can tell, he's happy we have depth, but he wants that roster spot big time. Expect him to go really hard with the training this summer and show up as a valid man to crack the roster. If not he goes to Utica and plays with Dane Fox. He still adds GREAT depth at both center and LW. Say Bo goes back to Junior, a couple of our centers go down this season, he will show how valuable he is then. Trust me. His only flaw is his speed, although I do think his "lack of speed" is overplayed a little bit, he can work hard to either improve or get passed it. He will be hugely valuable, just wait. He's only 20.. At least wait until he's like 23 before you call him a bust.
  21. Overall the whole team looked sluggish. First game in over a month plus, a number of players just now getting healthy and back into the lineup. Still only lost 1-0 and were scored on by a man who averaged a goal per game. (not a point per game… a goal per game….) Overall the whole team looked rusty, but still they put 40+ shots on net and barely lost. People, relax, if this performance happens again, then ok, maybe cause for concern. 2 more games, ok, there may be a problem. But right now, everyone just needs to relax. Just wait, the knights, and Bo along with them, will bounce back and have a good game next time. Wait and see
  22. To be fair, can you really blame him? He got a big pay raise, and took up 4.5 million in cap and for most of the year produced pretty much nothing. Torts is the kind of guy that is all about, holding people accountable. (Possibly to a fault?) Burrows performance this year was abysmal. It's understandable he'd want to hold him accountable.
  23. I just hope if Bo makes the 3c, it's because he stepped up in the summer. I hate the idea of just handing him the spot over someone like Mike Santorelli, if he doesn't deserve it. Either step up and earn it yourself, or you go back to Juniors for your final year. People seem to want to just give him the spot, but thats not how you run a franchise. You don't just give someone a spot because their young, or you made a trade for them, etc etc. All you do is give them a chance. It's up to them, Bo in this case, to step up to the plate, rather than just being handed the spot.
  24. fair enough. I'll edit the list, but I think we can agree to disagree on shot. Virtanen's shot is so powerful, yet still super accurate forehand or backhand. The kid picks his point and hits it. But I'll give you the vision point and overall IQ
  25. Honestly, I like both, but I don't even think it's a competition. Virtanen is better in almost every category. Virtanen better shot (arguably the best shot int he draft, if not probably top 3) better hands Faster skater (some have said the fastest in the draft, people forget you need speed to actually connect hits) More swagger Local BC boy (more likely to stay his whole career if wanted?) 17 years old Can move to Center if need be Ritchie Bigger player Tougher? (Virtanen still had more fights this year) Can play both wings (edit: better vision) (edit: better hockey IQ) The way I see it, Virtanen already has the tools to be a solid third liner, but could still become a top line player. Virtanen has all the tools to be a top line player, he just needs to be taught how to fully unleash it. Worst case scenario we still get a speedy, we get a third line winger who can snipe and hit. 30-40 points a season easy. But he still has the potential to be a top line game changer. All he needs is some good teaching over the next few years. Oh and people say when Virtanen gets to the NHL he's going to have problems with his physical game. I don't see why. 6 foot 200-205 pounds, and has the amazing foot speed needed to actually connect with hits. To give you guys a reference on his size, Ryan Kesler is about the same weight (NHL lists him at about 202lbs) but 2 inches taller and seems to use his speed to hit people just fine. Again, Virtanen is still 17, he's most likely going to bulk up for the NHL. In Virtanen, I see another version of Evander Kane but without the attitude problems we hear from WPG.
