What part of "They weren't anywhere near the players they are now" isn't computing? Mac, Rantanen and Landeskog didn't have a handshake agreement to suck that year. For Mac and Rantanen, that's just what they were. If Mackinnon, Rantanen and Landeskog from 2017 were as good as Pettersson, Kuzmenko and Miller from 2023 they wouldn't have been bad enough to draft Makar.

Mackinnon and Rantanen were 21 and 20 respectively, and weren't anywhere near the players they are now (Mackinnon finished with 53 points, Rantanen with 38), and Landeskog had an awful season that year (33 points, -25) when they bottomed out and landed Makar. By contrast, Pettersson is on pace for 100 points, Hughes a PPG pace, and Miller and Kuzmeko nearly a PPG pace as well, and Demko is far better than Pickard or Varlomov. It's not a compatible situation. Our group is too good to allow the bottom to fall out. Hell, if we had a healthy Demko all year things would be even worse from a tanking perspective.

Being totally serious for a minute, most of the top teams in the west this year aren't teams that bottomed out completely, which just goes to show that there's more than one way to skin a cat. Our core isn't Tampa or Colorado quality, but I would put it up against most other teams in the league and feel pretty comfortable with it. Problem is that we still need to rinse the stink of Benning's crappy team building out of our mouths before we can move forward. We should have let the bottom fall out between 2013-2018, before Petey, Hughes and Demko joined the team. It's too late now, unless you're okay with moving those core players out now, which honestly, Im not. The option to dump everyone and tank will always exist. I'd rather give these guys a shot first.
