  1. The value of a pick in the first half of the 1st rd is extremely high, regardless of what the odds are of that player panning out. What matters is what the league perceives the value of the pick to be, not what the value actually is by an objective standard.
  2. Being the host team is irrelevant. Why would you like it if the players you're being given are obviously inferior prospects? Even if the player at 13th overall doesn't pan out, chances are they'll a least be an NHLer. The chances of grabbing an NHL quality player with the pieces you're suggesting the Panthers receive are pretty slim.
  3. Every team thinks that they'll get it right. Put the shoe on the other foot, if we were sitting at 13th overall instead of 10th, and someone offered up an equivalent package to the one you're suggesting, would you take it?
  4. It doesn't matter what the actual value of a 13th overall pick is. What matters is how much that pick is valued amongst the league. The perceived value. Discussing the history of the pick itself is irrelevant.

  6. It's like Eklund just pulls a random team name out of a hat, pulls a random player's name out of another hat, and creates a rumor out of that.
  7. I don't think that's necessarily true. After the top 2 picks, there seems to be a bit of a cluster&^@# from about 3-12 or so. Sure, guys like Dach and Bryam are ahead of guys like Newhook and Soderstrom, but it's not that much of a stretch, whereas from around 12-15 there seems to be a somewhat significant drop-off in this draft (depending on how highly you rate guys like Harley and Kaliyev). That being said, I don't think Gaudette is a piece that Colorado would find overly enticing considering that they're filled to the brim with young players that have already or are close to making the jump. Deal really doesn't make sense for either team imho.
  8. Cap dumps scare me. If it's only for one year, fine. But any more than that and we start to enter dicey territory. We're a couple years away from truly being a contender again, but I also do believe we're on the tail end of our rebuild, so taking on a multi-year cap dump for a first rd pick may end up costing us cap space when we really need it. Also, we have the Luongo situation staring us in the face now. There's going to be some significant retention there. We also may end up having to buy out Eriksson, so again, more retention. And then the big one. Unless I'm wrong, both Pettersson and Hughes will be up for extensions at the same time, and assuming Hughes is as good as we all know he is, we're looking at at least 12-14 mill per season to sign both of them. Maybe more, depending on how good they get. So yeah, I'll vote yes on cap retention, but ONLY on the condition that we're only stuck with the contract for one season..
  9. At some point trades and free agent signings will play a role in filling some of those holes as well. Also, we still have the 40th overall, so we should land a pretty good prospect there as well. Hypothetically, if we draft one of the forwards (Newhook, Krebs or Zegras) with our first, I'm willing to bet we'll go D with our 2nd rd pick and hopefully pick up another player around the same quality as Wu. Also, I'd say it's entirely likely that Benning strikes gold with one of the later round picks as well.
  10. Probably Newhook. Zegras, Krebs and Broberg are options B, C, and D,
  11. This really isn't the draft to move up in unless you're moving into one of the top two slots. Other than that it's kind of a crap shoot from 3-12. Sure, there are guys ahead of others in that range (Dach ahead of Zegras, for example), but it's not a wide enough gap to give up what would be necessary to move up from where we are to 3 or 4. Nobody is gonna bat an eyelash if the guy picked at 10 ends up being better than the guy picked 3rd.
  12. The more I learn about this draft class, the more I'm liking Alex Newhook. Sure, he's playing in a lower tier league, but he's absolutely destroying it, and did very well for himself in the Worlds too. And of course I still like Boldy as well. Perfect guy to compliment Petey and Boes. I was almost sold on Caufield, but his small stature coupled with his lack of speed worries me. Also, assuming he'd eventually play on Bo's right side, I don't know if they're a great fit. Cauliflower seems like the type of guy that needs a real great playmaking center to set him up, and I don't know if Bo is that guy. Krebs might be another nice option to eventually slot in on Petey's left side, but considering his style is pretty comparable to Bo, would that end up being somewhat redundant? Right now I'm liking Boldy and Newhook. Also pretty intrigued by Zegras. Not totally sold on either defender. Broberg had himself one helluva World tournament, but I don't know exactly how much stock to put into these types of tournaments. We've seen guys like Mittelstadt absolutely light up these types of tournaments, only to fizzle once the hit the NHL. By contrast, Pettersson has always been somewhat mediocre in these types of tournaments, and...well.... Still, it most certainly doesn't hurt his stock, but I worry about is supposed "lack of hockey IQ". Soderstrom sounds like a safer bet, but the pick honestly just screams "meh" to me. I'd much rather take one of the forwards this time around.
  13. Well, maybe it's just my own personal criteria, but I do think that a team has to have a modicum of success in order for a player from that team to be recognized as a Hart candidate. What position would Edmonton be in if they didn't have McDavid? Well, they'd still be a non-playoff team, so in that regard he didn't make much difference. Granted, they'd be worse without him, but if you can't reach the playoffs, it really doesn't make any difference. In fact, if you don't make the playoffs, it's beneficial to finish with a worse record. Contrast that to Mackinnon, who's team did make the playoffs. Without Mackinnon, they don't make it.
  14. I believe that Hughes, Kakko, Bryam, Dach, Turcotte, Cozens, Caufield and Boldy will all be gone before we pick. If any of them fall to us, you take them and run imho. Solid chance that one of Broberg and Soderstrom are taken before we pick as well, although I doubt both of them will be gone by the time we pick. My guess is Broberg goes first, but it could be either/or. I think we'll be looking at a field that looks something like this.... Broberg/Soderstrom Newhook Krebs Podkolzin Kaliyev Zegras If the field looks like this, I immediately skip the two Russians. Lots of skill, but way too many red flags. I think Benning does the same. So, at the end of the day, we end up with these options... Broberg/Soderstrom Newhook Krebs Zegras I'm cool with any of these guys.
  15. I don't like these choices at all. Looks like they just went with name recognition over the actual criteria for the award.
  16. He finished the season with 10 points in his last 20 games. Not good for his standards, but I wouldn't exactly call it "falling off a cliff" for a 20 year old rookie playing his first season on NA ice.
  17. We shouldn't handcuff ourselves. If there's a free agent that will make the team better, make a call. If there's a trade to be made that could make the team better, make the call. I just don't want to see us sit idly by and do nothing. We're ready to push for a playoff spot. Another 5 years of "Let's not do anything but build through the draft" will do irreparable damage to the franchise and to the core we're currently developing. As long as we're not trading picks, young impact players, or going after expensive players over than 30 like we did with Eriksson, do whatever it takes.
  18. Why isn't anybody talking about Kole Lind?
  19. Hot take: Thomas Gradin should have his jersey raised to the rafters.

@coastal.view The "you have to win a cup before you retire a number" mindset went out the window when Smyl's was retired.

sorry you somehow equate him to them

Gradin’s situation is unique in that while he had an above average career as a Canuck (which alone shouldn’t get his jersey retired)....his scouting eclipses anything Smyl did on the ice.  As 48 mentioned....Burke has always stated it was Gradin who convinced him to go after the Sedins.  He was the scout that thru his sources got the Canucks to move up in the draft so they could draft Edler.  He also was the guy that scouted Ohlund.

  20. Bo scored his fair share of goals this past season, and is at least more likely to throw a check or get into a fight than Petey. Bo is a goddamn bull. Took more draws than anyone is the league this past season, played every single game, plays on both the PP and the PK, and is consistent a player as anyone is the league. He is the guy. Hell, Petey and Brock are already jokingly calling him "Cap'". That pretty much says it all.
  21. Yeah, it's Horvat, and it's happening by the start of next season.
  22. It's not the worst idea I've ever heard. In fact, when Gillis was at the helm as president the team was financially very successful. Granted, that had a lot to do with the fact that the team was better at the time, but still. Gillis had his strengths and I think a lot of those strengths would be pretty well suited to the president role, with Benning still able to do his job as GM. If it ends up happening I won't bitch.
