  1. Very, very close, and although I think Petey is a more complete player, I might have to give an ever so slight edge to Hughes. What he's doing is so unbelievable that he's putting up comparible numbers to what Coffee and Orr were doing at this point in their careers, and doing it while on a bad team too. You don't waste something like that.
  2. What's the point of this post? OP asked a pretty straight forward question that had nothing to do with draft picks or playoffs.
  3. Not to jump on the Hovat dump, especially considering I was defending him a couple pages back (and still believe a lot of the dumping is unnecessary), but it's notable that Miller has passed Horvat in points on the season. Didn't look like that was going to happen a couple months back.
  4. Putting blame on people or treating them differently solely because of the actions of their governments is such a dehumanizing way of thinking.
  5. It's easy to look at what happened with Bruce last year and what we're doing now hand-waive it away. It also purposely ignores important context in order to push the idea that it's exactly the same type of situation. One first must remember that, once Bruce took over, Brad Shaw was finally given the reigns to the blueline and turned the ragtag group around as best he could. Brad Shaw left in the offseason, and that just so happened to coincide with our blueline falling apart at the start of the season. Bruce coaches a pretty loose style and without a defensive guru like Shaw around to compensate, our piss poor blueline was exposed. Compounding that was Demko's poor start and eventually injury (and again, if we're using opponents using AHL goaltenders as a way to deligitimize this late run from the Canucks, then that should deligitimize opponent wins against us while Demko was out as well. Can't have it both ways). As far as we know, our coaching staff won't be altered in the offseason. OEL's injury in the offseason also needs to be taken into account. I, along with most others, wish he was off the books, but as it currently stands he's still the second most important defenseman on this team, and it would be foolish to assume that taking a significant injury to his foot in the offseason that obviously would have had an effect on his training and conditioning didn't contribute to his poor season this year. As Pettersson last season showed us, starting a season not only healthy but physically up to speed is super important. I expect that having OEL start the season healthy after a proper offseason of training and conditioning will strengthen our blueline next year. Then there are the additions that have been made. It's important to keep in mind that between the end of last season and the start of this season our management (for whatever reason) wasn't able to make any significant improvements to the blueline. Over the course of the season though, we've made a few notable changes, and I expect more is to come in the offseason. Bear, while not a worldbeater by any means, has proven to be a solid addition. Assuming he's resigned, starting the season with him should ensure our blueline it in better shape than it was at the start of next season. Then there's Hronek. Possibly the most significant addition to our blueline since drafting Hughes, and on paper, the best righty we've had since Tanev was in his prime (I know they're very different players, no need to point that out). It remains to be seen how he'll work out, but he's a very significant addition that, on paper, greatly improves our right side. I imagine we sign one of Livingstone or Malinski in the offseason. Hard to predict college guys, but both have significant potential (my fingers are crossed for Livingstone). I also imagine that the chaos giraffe is gone next season, which, in all due respect to Myers, should alleviate some of the boneheaded plays. Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the improvement to out developmental. In the wake of injuries, we're seeing players from Abbotsford step into the lineup and hold their own. While that may not seem like a huge deal to some, in recent years our farm team has been on a completely different wavelength from the parent club, and callups generally didn't go too well. Colliton seems to be working wonders on the farm club and, as a result, guys like Juulson and Brisebois have been stepping into the lineup ready and have been holding their own. Having our farm and parent clubs on the same wavelength is so important as it ensures there are guys able to step in when injuries occur. Then there's the emergence of Silovs as a legitimate goaltender with the capability of winning games at the NHL level. We now have a legitimate option that we were unaware we had earlier in the year when Demko went down. Point is that there are a lot of differences between where the team is now and where the team was at this point last year. It just takes a deeper look.
  6. I'm so tempted to make a joke that will probably get me suspended considering the current topic of discussion in the thread.
  7. Yes yes, every team we beat is being beaten because they just suck for one reason or another. If it's a team above us in the standings it's because they're coasting and resting their best players, if it's a team below us it's because they're 90% AHLers and prospects that have already moved their stars. It couldn't possibly be because the team is playing better and has actual NHL caliber goaltending behind it for the first time this season. That would feed the narrative that this team, with a proper defensive system and proper goaltending, is better than their play earlier in the season indicated, and we can't have that. Although, if victories against opponents that are "icing AHL goalies" aren't seen as legitimate, then shouldn't any victory against us while Demko was injured also be deemed illegitimate? Interesting how the logic apparently doesn't go both ways.
  8. Something was seriously off with him to start the season. Thank God he came back as his old self.
  9. You ever see someone's post and know right away that the person in question is not to be taken seriously?
  10. Silver lining to not having Demko for most of the year is that it shone a spotlight on just how terrible our defense actually is. There's no hiding from it now and management is finally being forced to take action.
  11. I'm curious to see how they fix the blueline and balance that with staying cap compliant.
  12. Get ready for another "meaningless" win against Vegas, baby
  13. I think it's been pretty well established that our lack of success was due to shit management. As far as the second part of your post goes, that sounds pretty petty tbh. I we were talking about someone that f$$%ed over the franchise somehow then maybe it would be warranted, but we're talking about Bo Horvat here. Maybe his leadership style was too stoic, but he conducted himself with class while he was here.
  14. You know, I was never the biggest Horvat fan in the world, and I'm happy with what we recieved in the trade, but we don't need to keep sh#%$ng on the guy either. He was our captain when it was a pretty crappy time to be, and despite all of the failure, none of which was on him, he did lead our team to the best playoff run we've had since 2011.
  15. It's kind of impressive how we manage to be so bad while having such incredible talent on our team.
  16. Tbh we were good down the stretch last year. Bruce had the forwards loosening up after Green was suffocating them. Shaw was put into position to actually run the blueline and, coupled with Demko's strong play, that made the difference. We lost Shaw in the offseason and really didn't have proper goaltending until just recently. We didn't improve the blueline at all, and Bruce's loose coaching style, which was so effective at the end of last season, became more of a hindrance with the loss of Demko and Shaw running the blueline. The idea that this is "just like last year" indicates lazy, one dimensional thinking.
