  1. Yep, 1st plays the wildcard. 2nd div winner plays the 3rd.
  2. I think Estrada has earned the right to be more than a swing man. With Stroman returning, depending on what happens with Buerhle and Price, Hutch may be out of a spot.
  3. Don't forget Frank Thomas. Thomas and Griffey, I think, could have been the top two power hitters of the era if it wasn't for steroids.
  4. I noticed that. Boston got the Brinks truck to Dombrowsky before Toronto did.
  5. It couldn't have just been a meniscus tear. Those generally aren't that hard to come back from.
  6. I'm not going to expect any help from the Twins. This is the time of year when young teams tend to fade and the really highly paid veterans show their worth. Unless Tanaka or Nova go down, it's going to be a dogfight right until the end.
  7. Just looking at the roster of the Yankees. I was curious to see how much other their roster was developed by them or traded for in reasonable trades. I tagged the players with a $$$ where it seems the Yankees used their financial clout to get players either by the obvious (Free agency) or through trades that probably only they or a small number of other big money teams could've made. Here is what I came up with: Starting Pitchers Eovaldi – Trade Nova – International Free Agent (Developed by Yankees) $$$ Sabathia – Free agent Severino – International Free Agent (Developed by Yankees) $$$ Tanaka – free agent signed from the Japanese professional league Relievers Betances – Drafted Cotham - Drafted $$$ Miller – Free Agent Mitchell – Drafted Shreve – Trade Warren – Drafted Wilson – Trade Cathcers $$$ McCann – Free Agent Murphy – Drafted Infield Bird – Drafted $$$ Drew – Trade Gregorius – Trade $$$ Headley – Trade $$$ Rodriguez – Trade Ryan – Trade $$$ Teixeira – Free Agent Outfielders $$$ Beltran – Free Agent $$$ Ellsbury – Free Agent Gardner – Drafted Young – Minor League Contract That's 10 players or a whopping 40% of their 25 man roster. Compared to the Blue Jays: Starting Pitchers $$$ Buehrle – Trade Dickey – Trade Estrada – Trade Hutchison – Draft Price – Trade (would tag with $$$ if he resigns with Jays) Bullpen Cecil – Draft Hawkins – Trade Hendriks – Trade Loup – Draft Lowe – Trade Sanchez – Draft Schultz – Waivers Osuna – acquired from Mexican league for cash (similar to an International signing really) Catchers $$$ Martin – Free Agent Navarro – Free agent Infielders Colabello – Waivers Donaldson – Trade Encarnacion – Trade Goins – Draft Pennington – Trade Smoak – Waivers $$$ Tulowitzki – Trade Outfielders Bautista – Trade Pillar – Draft Revere - Trade Here, the Blue Jays used their financial clout for 12% of their roster. Pretty big difference. That's tough to compete. Don't blame AA for mortaging a lot of future for a shot this year. Heh, I'm also surprised that Osuna is the only pseudo-international free agent on the roster considering how often they have dipped into that well...I guess they traded those prospects away for help now
  8. Anyone out there ever watch 4 on the Floor? I was trying to explain Mr. Canoehead to my wife...she was perplexed.

  9. My last two years of baseball I loved my CF. He had great range and never missed the routine fly balls. It gave me so much more confidence as a pitch-for-contact pitcher. I loved throwing the curve at different arm slots. It was like 2 pitches in one. Threw over the top for the 12 to 6 curve, then 3/4 arm for the 10 to 3 curve. Not being a fire baller, it gave me a fighting chance to get through a line-up more than once. Man, I miss pitching.
  10. In support of the Jays, I'm thinking of rockin' a Buerhle beard

Seriously though, someone needs to design a Che Guevara t-shirt with Buerhle on it. That would be awesome!

  11. Hee hee, aren't we all glad this is about the only issue about the Jays we can talk about? Shows how much the bullpen has been turned around.
  12. Yeah, saw the CLE/NYY score earlier and saw NY up by two in extra innings and figured the Jays would have to wait another day to gain a game. But, low and behold, the Indians clawed one out...in 16 innings no less.
  13. Agreed. Depending on what happens with Dickey, Buhrle, and Price the Jays will be forced to switch him back to starter. I wonder what they'll do with Osuna. He's been a starter for the most part too.
  14. Heh, that and the Blue Jays line-up is a #$%!^& to pitch against.
  15. The luxury of being at the start of the gauntlet all season.
  16. When/if Travis gets back, do you think he'll go back to the top of the order? I also wonder if other managers will follow Gibbons lead of putting the big bats closer to the top of the order. I like the logic to it. Might as well give them more ABs. After the first inning it doesn't matter if your table setters are at 8-9 or 1-2 anyway.
  17. Canuck fitted hats always seem to be meh, so I've always gone for the black Jays New Era hat myself. Now you need to get the Blu Jay stirrups
  18. Not quite, Yankee logic is to trade Severino for a superstar now. THEN sign him after Detroit has spent years developing him into a superstar.
  19. + hitting Tulo. This just reinforces my belief that the next time the Jays play the Orioles and Royals, they have to strike first. I'm normally not a supporter of this kind of baseball but the umps numerous times have left the Blue Jays no recourse. Particularly the Orioles, they have thrown at Bautista for too long. And since the team to strike first has always gotten off scott free, have at er Jays pitches, have at er. You should get one free pass (or in the case of the Royals....four).
  20. Beltre completed a cylce by the 5th inning. Almost had time to do it twice!

  21. I was searching for an online article with some recent runs but couldn't find any. I know Sportsnet mentioned some in an article recently. But off the top of my head, there was the mythic run that Oakland went on that Moneyball was based off of. Pretty sure they did something similar not too long ago. I think it was a couple years ago a few teams charged late to grab playoff spots (I think St. Louis was one of the teams). Now is the time for the Jays to go on a run and get a little cushion. Edit: correction it was 2011 where St. Louis surged to take the Wild Card while the Red Sox lost a 9 game lead on September 1st (to Tampa Bay I think)
  22. I'd like to know the reason why players traded part way through the season don't go with draft pick compensation. This just emboldens the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers of the league even more to come up with a dump truck load of money. Sadly, I don't like the Jays chances of resigning Price.
  23. I love Yost's comment about how the Blue Jays batters dive into pitches so you have to brush them back as if all of Major League Baseball doesn't do it. Seriously, umping like in today's game and in every Baltimore series the last 2 years tells me you HAVE to be the team to strike first as there are absolutely no consequences to doing it (other than a runner on base). Next time the Jays play the Royals, plunk Morales right away. Next time they play Orioles, plunk Jones right away. The way these games are being umped, the Blue Jays have play this way or else Bautista and Donaldson are just going to get hit again and again.
