Hutton had 20 points in 69 games. Biega? 16 points in just 41 games. What's your point?
-
This is exactly it. I would love to have him on the team people just need to realize what he is and where he stands in the overall picture.
-
My mistake, I guess when you say" Local kid, good teammate and a great speaker. " I don't know what else you are trying to say. In fact, you aren't really sure in most of your descriptions of him and that is the whole argument. Coulda ,shoulda, woulda, right? From the 3 full NHL seasons I have watched him play, I did not see a glimmer of greatness in his game that is waiting to come out. Hughes on the other hand? I watched him for only few games and I see the potential. Virtanen? has showed glimses of greatness so there is still that hope with him. Stech? He is just OK and I don't see how much more he can offer. Hutton was OK too and look where he's at.
-
I think you are over rating him and I see you are not using any kind of description pertaining to his hockey abilities. Eddie Lack was a nice guy too as was Hutton. That doesn't mean they are going to take us to the promised land. He will get bumped down the line this year and even more so if some of the prospects earn spots with the big club as well. He will be like Biega and he will be utilized if needed. We need to stop trying to hang on to mediocrity and aim to raise the bar higher then what we are used to up to this point.
-
I agree he his a good 3rd pairing dman and he should be paid as such. He is a good energy guy like Motte but he certainly isn't a top 6 guy just as Stech is not a top 4. The difference between Stech and Tanev? Both can go in the corners and Tanev will come out with the puck. Stech? maybe, if he is not up against the oppositions top lines. With Cap issues, I don't think there is room to pay a 3rd pairing dman close to 4 million dollars in this day and age. 2.5-3 is probably where he should fall unless he surprises all this year and breaks out.
-
We live in the Cap Era so we don't have the luxury of paying him more because we MIGHT need him to play up in the line up. Sorry but Stech is no Tanev. With Tryamkin, Juloevi, Woo, Hughes etc. the writings on the wall for Stech unfortunately.

That's what I was trying to explain. There are so many attributes that make a good defenseman a lot of guys look at 1 or 2 things and that's it. He is too small to go into the boards and come out on top and he doesn't have the smarts of a Hughes to outsmart his opponents. He doesn't regularly play on the PP or the PK and that's because he doesn't have the attributes that others do. I don't know how others don't see that. I was given the same grief for my opinion on the Sedins as well because even if they held some unbelievable attributes, they were not complete players. I think its one dimensional and I like they player(s) who come with the complete package. I want my TEAM to succeed and not just the PLAYER. If you don't have all the tools in your toolbox then I would rather see someone else in that spot. Hutton was given an opportunity and so will Stech. This year will seal his fate and so he will have to play a little more offensively if he wants to stick with the club.
-
Explain to me how you rate him as a Top 4 defenseman? Explain to me how he is better then Biega other then age? Not disrespecting the guy I love his heart but I don't see the optimism you obviously do with his potential. He was given a chance on the PP and I did not see potential as a future PMD. Hughes on the other hand? Its pretty obvious what a young PMD is supposed to look like. Enlighten me would ya?
-
"Giving his all" is fine and dandy IF you can back it up. Motte does it and is effective. Motte's speed allows him to do things others cannot. Stecher can try to shoot a slapshot until he is blue in the face but if he cannot blow it past the goalie it is totally useless. Like I said, I love the guy but he just doesn't have what it takes to be an effective PMD nor a stay at home dman. He is a younger version of Biega, which is not a bad thing, he just has limitations that cannot be overlooked.
-
None of his attributes, you state, are big selling features for a guy you want to count on in the playoffs. When the going gets rough, I am sorry but he is going to get "run over" and he has no offensive prowess to back it up with like Hughes is going to have. He is a middle of the road dman who is SERVICABLE, plain and simple. Biega had 16 points in half of the games and Hutton had 20 so what is your point? Our dcore has been really bad so you cannot grade him simply with our core group. Try that now that we have our NHL level dmen to compare him to. Give him time? He is 25 and has 3 full seasons in the NHL, I think what you see is what you get, the same with Hutton and look what happened to him. I see him as a little above Biega but I seen some prospects who can bring much more to the table and will surpass him in the pecking order very soon. He was needed when we had nobody else, his time is coming to an end and he will be surpassed by prospects. Sorry but that is the sad truth. He will have to perform some kind of miracle this season to earn a new contract to outduel our prospects, otherwise he will be joining his counterpart Hutton very soon.
-
If he is not clearing the crease or putting a bit of fear into the opposition in the corners, then he needs to be able to get the puck to our talented forwards through speed and smart play. If he cannot do either effectively, then he will fall by the wayside the same as Hutton did and the strong shall prevail. I like the guy, but I like the idea of a Stanley Cup in this city, a little more.
-
No improvement since his last contract so I highly doubt he is in for a raise. He will have to show another level this year if that's going to happen Alf.
-
Stech is a great hometown guy, but unfortunately he is not "playoff type material" and will be a "Biega type player" unless he explodes with some kind of offensive prowess this year, which I highly doubt. He is serviceable but like Iduce said, he is not a top 4 dman.
-
I think once LE is gone, the days of us being called a " gentlemanly" team will be finally over.
-
I guess those who thought he was part of our core group, now have their answer to where he stands in our future plans. Just sayin.

Will this Canucks team be better then our 2014-15 playoff team?
EdgarM replied to Rush17's topic in Canucks Talk
Key word(s) being regular season...……….. Our character and grittiness will eventually carry us farther as we progress. -
For those that thought the best recipe for success was just speed and skill are in for a special treat. A team well balanced will be fun to watch and will provide more wins overall. Good times are ahead.

We have Pearson and Beagle who have Cups as well as others who have playoff experience such as Ferlund and Miller. I think we are fine in that respect. -

This team is better built but not sure if they have enough experience yet. Ferlund and Miller give us components we have sorely missed, grit in the top 6. Also, Hughes gives us a component we have not had for a long time, a legit PMD. Grit and character on all lines and more talent in the top 6, makes this a better team then the 2014-15 team. Goalies are not a concern. We will be good this year, better next year and even better the year after. -
Thoughts on how Vancouver stacks up to division rivals
EdgarM replied to aqua59's topic in Canucks Talk
I think a lot here underestimate the parity in this league and how close the middle of the pack really is. Sure we have a couple of elite teams and a couple of bottom dwellers but the middle of the pack teams can move up and down in the standings so much that it is hard to predict where they eventually fall at the end of the season. When LA won the cup and then missed the playoffs the next year, was when I realized how close teams are and there are many other examples of this. TB getting knocked out in the 1st round and ST. Louis going from last to winning the cup last year and Vegas going to the finals in their fist year is another. Being in the Cap era probably has a lot to do with it. -

With the subtraction of Hutton and Pouliot, our chances against should go way down, add in a couple of NHL quality D men and we will better just because of the guys in front of them. I feel confident Marky can make that first stop, the problems last year mostly lied with the D men playing out of position or not clearing the front of the net to stop those second and third shots on net. This should not be too much of a concern this year. -

The argument was that we picked up 2 top 6 FA's even though we have Baert,Ericksson and Goldobin last year. Obviously with the 2 signings, somebody has got to go and I see other guys in the line up that fit those lines better. Pearson, Leivo and Roussel are probably going to get top 6 time along with Ferlund,Miller,Pederson,Bo and Boeser. Not to mention Virt might get utilized more offensively I see no reason for those other 3. No doubt Baert is a great player, unfortunately for him, we now have depth with speed, skill, strength and durability. Just like Stech, we now have players higher on the pecking order, so that leaves them fighting for their jobs. -

The most important aspect that we need to look at is the development of the young core. Obviously none of them have reached their potential and this will take time. I think we will be competitive this year but we will only get better in the next couple of seasons and we will gradually grow stronger. Add in a couple of more pieces from the minors and then we will be off and running. Similar to what Colorado is doing. The other key element we have is that we have the pieces already in place to help the kids. The bottom 9 were added last year and this year top 6 and D were added. We also have good competition with our goalies so everything is pointing to continued success as the next few seasons progress. Barring our usual parade of injuries, we will make the playoffs this year and we will get stronger as our kids gain experience and maturity. JB has built a system in which we should see continued success from here on out for many years to come. -

This reminds me of our position with the mighty Rangers in 94'. Everyone had the "love on" for Messier and the rest of the Ex-Coilers NYR's. Being the underdog is a good thing IMO. -

The same could probably be said for Goldy and Baert as well.
