I believe Ovie finally did the same thing and he was greatly rewarded. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

The big picture for this team is becoming abundantly clear. JB has been adding players with high compete level and the ability to play whatever game gets thrown at us. Speed, toughness, skill? Those who never experienced the team in the nineties are in for a treat. Players who do not currently fit this mode? Baertchi, Goldy and Ericksson. I suspect they will be moved some time soon as did other players who did not fit this mold. Good times are ahead. -
I am not sure if you know the concept of hockey or not. Just like basketball you need to play both defense and offense. Just because you are gifted at offense it does not give you a pass on not playing defense. The Sedins made up for a lot of this because, in their hayday, they possessed the puck for the majority of their shifts and did not need to play too much defense. This became a big deficiency in their latter years as their bodies slowed down due to age and they could not defend when needed. This also hindered them in the playoffs as they were affected by tighter checking. Players such as Petey shows that they are willing to do anything to win the game which includes playing defense to the best of their ability. The same could not be said for Goldobin, unfortunately. Petey is doing this before he has even grown into a Man's body. That shows a lot of guts and determination, something you want in a player going after a Cup. Peter Forsberg showed this same type of play and he has 2 Stanley Cups to prove this type of play is successful. The same for N. Lidstrom. Players today need to be swiss army knives in that they need to have several attributes to be successful. There are very few "Goons" left and with teams rolling 4 lines nowadays, you need to be fast, be offensive, be defensive and be able to take hits as well as dish them out. If you can't do these things then you will leave your team with a deficiency they will have to make up somewhere else. Sadly, this is where Loui is leaving this team in which their hands are tied due to his contract.

[Signing] Sharks re-sign Kevin Labanc
EdgarM replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Wow. Just wow. I am speechless. -
Speed and skill are the most effective in the regular season. If this is your top priority then I guess this is the model you would follow, however, if you are looking to go deep in the playoffs then you need a much more bigger, durable player to sustain the rigors of playoff hockey. You are not going into the playoffs with the players you mentioned as there is not enough skill there. Those guys were also around when the team was not built around "toughness" it was in the time of "gentlemanly" hockey. Not effective IMO, especially for the playoffs as Boston showed us in 2011. Look at St. Louis this year, I think the majority of their players are over 6 ft tall. Not a good regular season but there playoffs were a whole new ballgame. TB is a little smaller and didn't do so well in the Playoffs but had a great REGULAR SEASON.

[Signing] Sharks re-sign Kevin Labanc
EdgarM replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
40pts 2 years ago and 56pts last year for the Sharks? I think probably a little more then a mill. -
That's the point. They are like PMD's, there are not many of them for sure. They are the elite.

I think some are getting confused as to what a PF really is still. Keith Primeau was a prime example of a PF. He could score, stand in front of the net, fight, give out devastating hits all in one package. Basically needing NOONE ELSE on the team to succeed. I believe Bert was our last true PF. Rule #1? You need to have a big body to begin with. Rule #2? You need to have the ability to score goals.(Top 6 forward)

To say that you need this, this and this to win is a bit black and white and not very accurate. There are so many variables it is impossible to say one way or another. Your D can suck but if your goalie stands on his head, you win the game. You can win a game 1-0 or 10-9. You can suck 5 on 5 but if your PP is firing on all cylinders, you win the game. All you can do is put 23 guys together and see if they can put something together to win games. We have improved in areas we needed to improve on from last season and that alone should give us a better chance at being successful this year. If management/ownership is actively trying to improve the team every year and they are willing to spend to the cap every year, then I am happy with that and I am confident that they are doing everything in their power to help this team succeed.

Similar to the elusive PMD there are definitely very few that fit that mold.

[Rumour] NHL team to Offer Sheet Marner
EdgarM replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think you are definitely on to something here. If TO is able to extend Barrie, they are going to be in tough against the Cap for years to come, similar to Chicago. Four 1st rounders plus their own 1st Rounders go a long way to being able to utilize players on ELC's in the very near foreseeable future. Maybe Dumb@ss is not so dumb after all. -
I think everyone is trying to fit one type of player in a neat little category when in reality there are different levels to a PF. I see a PF as someone who can drive to the net and out muscle the D and have the skill to put it in the net. Obviously there are some that can do this better then others and there are some who have other attributes. They may have silky hands(Bert), stick handling ability(Lindros) ,have a killer slapshot(Owen Nolan) or can fight anyone when needed(Neely). Or you have someone who can do that, and then some, such as Mario. Maybe one of the reasons they take so long to develop is that they are still kids when they are drafted and they still need to grow into a mans body. Also, they are so multidimensional that it may take longer to master all of their particular skills. In the end, you end up with one heck of a hockey player in which you usually build your team around for sure.

Over say, 7-8 years? Yep. -
What is your 2019-2020 projected lineup for the Canucks?
EdgarM replied to Roberts's topic in Canucks Talk
Maybe he is insurance if Baert gets another concussion. At 1.5, I think he is nothing more then that. Bo, Petey, Boes and Miller are our for sure Top 6 and Pearson is probable. I think that last spot is still open for grabs and we have a few guys who will be fighting for it. -
I wasn't thinking Louie I was thinking the players making less then a million and we do have players such as Brisebois and Gaudette(waivers exempt) who will almost certainly will be sent to the minors, barring any further trades. With a requirement of say 7 d and 13 forwards, should give us the ability to move 4 or 5 bodies out which would give us plenty of extra cap space IMO. We currently have 10 d and 15 F signed.

What is your 2019-2020 projected lineup for the Canucks?
EdgarM replied to Roberts's topic in Canucks Talk
Bo is versatile as I believe Miller is as well. I would like to see what they could do together and I think Bo just needs someone who can think the game as he does and has the skill level to perform at his level. Bo seems to be given less offensive players when he is not playing with Boes, so I think Miller will be a definite upgrade to what he is used to. -
WAS? Isn't he only 22 year old?

[Proposal] Sign Micheal Ferland
EdgarM replied to Gary Levers's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I agree, I really think he is shooting for somebody with more offense and maybe he is working on something but I think he really needs an upgrade to Roussel who could play along side Petey. With trading for Miller, he solidifies the 2nd line with Bo but I think the need is for a top 6 player with sandpaper IMO. -
I get the feeling that with 26 players signed, not all of them will be playing come opening day. No?

[Proposal] Sign Micheal Ferland

With 14 F and 10 D signed, I am thinking some of them will be sent to the minors. I am thinking at least 4 players will be sent down/traded and then 1 more if he does get signed. I am thinking that would leave more then enough to sign him. No? -

I think this is a key piece we really need right now. This would also allow the Pearson/Bo/Miller line to form as well which looks promising. -
[Proposal] Bring Back 2011 Team
EdgarM replied to Mickey Rubis's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Don't forget punching bag Dan ,one eyed Manny and Hungry Man Burrows too. -
Thinking back to all those guys, a lot of them didn't have a ton of skill but they had that desire and that "never give up" mentality. That character team is what I am hoping we get back to one of these days. The 2011 team and TB are great, but, I would take these guys back in a heartbeat.
