The same could be said for the 94' series. As a small example of the 2 : Bure/Churla incident and the Sedin/Marchant incident, BIG DIFFERENCE! Both Game 7's were also completely different games. In 2011 we were shutout and in 94' Linden scored 2 goals with broken ribs, BIG DIFFERENCE.

As far as I am concerned, Edler has already shot himself in the foot and his integrity is in serious question. Sure he wants to stay in Vancouver, yeah right. We already know he has no desire to win a cup.He shows no attributes that I would like to see him pass on to the young core. This new core is being built around "character" players, which is what I think is needed to win championships, and Elders actions to date are not conducive to this. Bye-Bye Edler.
-
If he could do something with that career plus/minus I would tend to agree with you but he has had 4 seasons in the NHL and he is a combined -75 !!!!!!! He played more minutes on this team only because we have injury prone Edler/Tanev and he was one of the ONLY OPTIONS available. He IS a reason why our D is not so good and not a solution to our problems. I don't see his "development" improving. Benning has Cap space and other options(Hughes/OJ) he does not "have to have Hutton".

You have brought up some very good key points and put it all in one nice basket. What we have : Cap Space A Good foundation of young players(Core) Players that cannot stay HEALTHY What we need : Young , healthy players to add to our core How? :Use "Cap Space" to our advantage(Not take on long contracts to older players, i.e. Lucic) -Find short term contracts only Find players who cannot sign because of their teams cap restrictions(maybe we can trade away some of our low cost "plug" players) I am with you, adding key pieces does not put us back as the draft is a lottery and we need these components to our team anyway. Where we may faulter on this is getting players that are too old or have ballooned contracts which will hamper signing our core players when the time comes.

[Signing] Sharks re-sign Erik Karlsson
EdgarM replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
With roughly half of their Cap Space spent on 5 players for at least the next 6 years, there is definitely going to be much more BARGAINS to be had from SJ players coming up. LOVE IT! All of these teams who have been able to hoard young talent are finally going to have to pay the piper. Good times are ahead I just hope JB and Co. see this trend and act accordingly. -

So roughly 7 more contracts to sign with about 12 million left? I love watching these teams lock up their core for long term (7-8 years) as any very good players they accumulate(see Panarin in Chicago), will have to be practically given away because they do not have the Cap Space to sign them. JB should be lurking on the outside and wait until these teams are in a bind(see TO with Marner) and pounce on the REAL DEALS to be had. -
I totally forgot about that bogus ejection. They had no other way to get him out of the game and I couldn't believe that they were actually going to stoop that low. I just remember the game where we were getting penalty after penalty and we were not awarded one until the last half of the game. There were blatant miscalls too and it was obvious they were not going to give NY any penalty no matter what they did. I sure hope the young guys on this site are fortunate enough to see what a team going to war really looks like and it definitely wasn't 2011 by any stretch of the imagination.

Tell me im wrong. Edler is Worth 5 years @ 7.5 - 8 million per

I am all for pulling the band aid off, even if it hurts for a little while. The nice thing is that "Cap Space" puts in a position of strength and there are definitely "options" out there. -

By the way things have panned out so far, someone is not telling the truth here. Either: Edler doesn't really want to stay here and has decided to go for the money instead OR The club no longer wants him and they are looking at FA to change things up. If this is not the case then he would have been signed already. I think the main theme here is that yes we still need him, as presently he is one of our best defenseman. The problem? This need will decline as time goes by and will revert to a "Well how do we get rid of him now?" thought process. I am thinking this may start as early as next year. Remember when it was thought that it would be a good idea to resign the Sedins? I would be OK with any kind of 2 year deal but I do not want an old vet impeding on our ability to sign the future(EP/Hughes) when the time comes. Some teams have already made that mistake and we should be learning from these if we know what's good for us. -

Boeser suffered a serious injury from an "Accidental Play". He proved AFTER that he can still produce offensively ,as his point totals show from last season. Edler showed signs of a decline in foot speed last year and its not going to get better. Remember how quickly the Sedins footspeed and reactions left them? I am not sure he will last even "2/3 seasons". -

This has been the most frustrating problem that we have had for years. We get going then the injuries come and it all falls to pieces. Love Tanev and Eddie when they play but its time to move on and turn the page. It has been also been frustrating when Eddie has decided not to play full intensity when we really needed it. Even if we have to suffer through growing pains with Hughes and OJ, I think its better then continuing down the same path that we have been following for years and years. Getting help through FA will just be a bonus to add to Hughes and OJ. Just like 2 slow Sedins compounded our problem during the end of their careers, 2 often injured key dmen does the same thing. We are competitive when they play, and then, when injured, we tumble down the standings. Time for change. -
I agree there is a lot of speculation at this point and I guess we will soon find out either way. The good thing is that JB seems intent on improving our D one way or another.
-
Oh I know I was totally agreeing with you and was just adding to your idea. I don't know why others can't see the difference in these type of players. Peter Forsberg was the epitemy of what an "all round" player should look like and there are very few who possess all of those attributes. Bo is pretty close to being that type of player.
-
Or "Superstars" who cannot bring home a Stanley Cup. Winning a "regular season prize" is nothing without the ultimate prize IMO.
-
Yeah because their shootout abilities, slapshots, bodychecking, forechecking, PKing, footspeed etc abilities were second to none. Not to mention their relentless puck pursuit(oops I mean hooking and tripping abilities) and aggressive play. What was I thinking.
-
I think its called being "one dimensional" and players such as this rarely succeed in the NHL. Maybe during the regular season and maybe on the PP but when it comes to 5 on 5 or in the playoffs your dead in the water. Unfortunately the Sedins were like this and they were nullified once their team toughness disappeared and they lost that support. Put them on the PP and they were magical, put them in the Playoffs or tight checking 5 on5, not so effective. The league has gotten so competitive though now and if you have any kind of weakness on any of the 4 lines you definitely will be exposed. I like Petey's all round game and it will take him to far more success then just getting a lot points in the regular season.
-
Amen brother I felt like that(exhausted) after that playoff series as well. I felt that the team gave there ALL and there was nothing left to give in the end. Again this is why I was so disappointed at the effort in 2011.
-
I agree with why the team wants to see what their options are but if Edler really wants to sty here why would he wait to let the team explore other options(FA's) and risk the possibility that a replacement is found for him? Now it appears term and money are more of an issue for him then staying here. It just seems contradictory to what he has been saying up until now.
-
You missed the whole point of my post. If he refused to go to a contender because he really wants to stay in Vancouver then why has he not signed an extension yet? All of a sudden it appears there is a BUT in the equation now.
-
No I think I would still go with Slegr's assessment. There is a 23 man roster and there were still others who should have stepped up to the plate. What's that saying " When the going gets tough...………." ? They should have been playing like their lives depended on it and that is the biggest difference between the game 7's in 94 and 2011.

[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
