  1. No obviously I think you need more then one guy to provide leadership but I really think that the Captain sets the tone for what the team does behind him. Not one Captain with a Cup in the last 30-40 years does not display those attributes I described to you earlier. I don't think this is coincidence. Maybe we can go with another Nazzy or a Hank and see how the team plays behind him and see what happens.
  2. I guess that's where our points differ in that I see it more then just being "symbolic". It seems the Captain dictates how the team plays as some of the greats have had great teams follow them. Think of Gretzky's teams in Edmonton, Lemieux's teams in Pittsburgh, Yzerman's teams in Detroit, Sakic's teams in Colorado and Crosby's teams seem to do well all the time. I see a pattern here and again I see this person more then just "symbolic".
  3. It was a "magical" Stanley Cup run with a "Special Player" wearing the "C". Did I use too many big words for you?
  4. Well, watching most of the careers of the past Captains who won Cups, I see a pattern of attributes they carried such as a relentless desire to win and to win at almost any cost. I have seen a strong work ethic and Captains who were not one dimensional but could do many things. I seen the teams that they played for, follow these same desires which many of times brought them to Stanley Cups. Sure there are many players who carry these attributes and many who have veteran leadership, but just like it takes a "special team" to win a Cup I believe it takes a "Special player" to Captain them there. Trevor Linden is the only Captain that we have had that even comes close to being that type of Captain that has those "Special" qualities IMHO. If you managed to witness the 94 Cup run, then you would understand how "magical" it can be when you have the right Captain steering the ship. But if you think they just "talk to the refs" then I can't help you.
  5. With that attitude no wonder we have ZERO! Stanley Cups! Maybe you should look at past Stanley Cup Winners Captains to see what it takes. I am sure those guys were picked so they can "talk to the refs".
  6. This really seems more of what kind of Captain and what he brings to the table is what really this discussion is about. Some see what he does for the city or the community, what he does in the dressing room, what he does on the ice or does he bring the heart and desire to win at all costs mentality. It really doesn't matter to me who eventually gets the C as long as they bring the attributes which will eventually bring us a Cup or two. Strong desire to win at all costs, do whatever is needed to get there, does not accept mediocracy and will lead his team to victory because he has the respect of them and they will follow him no matter what. Whether that is Bo or Petey still remains to be seen. Both have shown strong attributes to date ,but ,we are still transitioning and we still have not had a sniff at the playoffs with this core yet. That is where we will see what they are made of. If someone comes out of that and they slightly resemble anything like Linden in the 94 playoffs, I will defend them for the Captaincy no matter who they are.
  7. We seem to have a good mix of veteran and young guys and character players throughout to keep playing the right way. This along with a Coach who makes everyone accountable spells success and a team that is trending upward.
  8. We are in a transition period and right now we are seeing what we have, "what sticks" and "what doesn't". This season has shown us a number of things of what this team is going to look like going forward.
  9. ….....or Petey gets us into the playoffs and carries us farther then any of us would have imagined. Like I said a lot of things can happen between now and when they do decide to name a Captain.
  10. We will see. A lot of things can happen between then and now.
  11. Oh Petey brings wayyyy more to the table then just high point totals. He's a gamer through and through and he's still a rookie. Looking at his first year and Bo's first year, there is competition here far more then what most think. Lets let these guys develop a little more and see what comes of it.
  12. Yeah that's what I am hoping and I know he has learned so much since he came into the league and he hasn't disappointed yet. I guess time will tell how this plays out. Any kind of playoffs would really separate the men from the boys and show who's destined to lead this team.
  13. Bo has been on such an upswing for such a long time .it seems, and then after that fight he got into he has done nothing since. Yes he has played awesome as a shutdown center and has helped the team with a crazy amount of faceoffs but his bid for the next Captain has eased up a bit. I eerily see the habits that Hank exhibited slowly creeping into his game. Not finishing checks along the boards, non-chalantly skating back to the bench, giving up on plays during a shift and generally not really leading his team to victory. I sincerely believe he has it in him but recently I am seeing all of the qualities of a good Captain in Petey. I agree, the part that separated Bo from the rest was his aggressive ,hard hitting play and his play lately is resembling a finesse player who skates away when the going gets tough. I am still cheering for Bo but he now has competition in a natural born leader who it seems will not let anyone stop him in succeeding in this league.
  14. Yeah I remember that but he has gone into a lull lately and I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it was going to get better when "help" returned and then I thought it was because of the long road trip but these last few games have me wondering if its something else. I see attributes in Petey that you rarely see. He is relentless in doing what ever it takes to win. Just watch him even behind the play he is always thinking what can I do. He never just stands on the ice and watches the play. I could only imagine if every player on the ice did that. Oh its close and I am so glad that they waited to see who was Captain because its not so cut and dry as it was last year.
  15. Totally agree on Petey being our next "Superstar". Just like Bure he carries more then one or two attributes and is a true gamer. He gets those timely points when the team needs them the most. Loved the Sedins and what they brought to this team but they lacked multiple attributes that would put them in that "Superstar" echelon. Foot speed, slapshots, defensive play, one on one with a goalie(shootout/breakaway) and "clutch" scoring were not their strong points. Can't wait to see what Petey can do once he gets into his full potential. Definitely "good times ahead".
  16. Good post IBatch, I too see the same assessment so far. I would like to add that TG has been trying to make players accountable by being more consistent such as Goldy and Jake. I see it during a game as well where a guy stops getting ice time if he is not on his game, or he sits.
  17. I believe injuries is the only thing that will stop us from getting in or a couple of key players get traded at the deadline. Highly unlikely though.
  18. We have a great team developing and I think this is their area that they need to work on. In the beginning of the year when they were hustling and finishing checks they were dominant in most games. The teams in the 90's were the same in that they did not give up games because they took a period or two off. This is what makes entertaining hockey and I believe this is even more relevant in home games. Entertain your home fans while making it difficult for the visiting team to steal a win from you. I know consistency is very difficult to accomplish but I believe we have the personnel to make this a reality. When we play a full 60 minutes of hockey we are a very difficult team to beat.
  19. This drive is what I want the rest of the team to have going into the playoffs. I really believe the Captain and the leadership dictate this "Drive". How can the team not follow when your Captain is doing EVERYTHING in his power to win a game? Did Hank and Nazzy leave everything on the ice in the playoffs? They were great players, no doubt, but I did not see this "drive" when it came to winning games or winning in the playoffs. It was like it was "another day at the office" for them. I want more from a Captain. I want them to show emotion when something didn't go right or they lost a game. I don't care who argues with the refs because it won't make a difference either way anyway.
  20. "He was just that far off from everybody else in the game." - Are you talking about Gretzky or Petey? "As to our Captain, we shouldn't look at offensive numbers alone." - Some of us are not looking at offensive numbers at all, this kid has so much more to bring to the table including an unrelentless desire to win and the desire to perform well every game. That's what makes him a cut above players with pure offensive skills. He actually has good defensive skills as well which is not common for a player with so much offensive ability.
  21. Some fans are saying there is this new kid called "Petey" who has been wowing Hockey fans from coast to coast. Is there really anything this kid CANNOT do? I doubt it . No one is saying that Bo is not Captain material we are just saying players and fans alike are following "Petey" and kind of like what he has been able to do for this team in such a short period of time. I have not seen this strong desire to win in a player since Bure and Linden used to jump over the boards.
  22. After watching pretty much every game those players played, I would say its pretty accurate. Sad but true. The only guy that truly bled for this team was Captain Canuck.
  23. I don't give a cr@p what his "media responsibilities" are, his main responsibility should be to take this team to WINNING A STANLEY CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  24. Yes if we can break that trend with anybody that resembles a Lemieux ,Sakic or an Yzerman I will be happy.
