He was already here what did you want them to do? He was under contract. I think they actually gave him another chance as he was able to get the group to improve. I think Demko had a lot of influence in how our season went not BB. They mishandled it in that the word got out before he was actually let go. He was still destined to go no matter what and like Bo, they probably already knew that up front. I am sure BB knew right off the bat he wasn't there guy and his last hurrah was to try to prove them wrong. The same with what Bo tried to do. Boeser was probably told the same thing but they probably didn't find the right deal ,at the time, and then Boeser started to improve his game.
-
They said right off the bat that he wasn't there guy, the thing is though? He was under contract. I wasn't surprised that he was going to be fired, it was only a matter of time. The thing that made it awkward, was that BB made his feelings about it public. He didn't want to leave. NHL coaches get fired all the time, it was blown all out of proportion.

Yes next year will determine Boesers fate I believe. He made some great improvements working under Tocchet's systems for sure. I didn't realize he was such a great passer he surprised me this season how his game has rounded out. I also noticed he was finding ways to get himself open for passes which I believed he struggled with in the past. Miller has really helped him that , it seems. If he can somehow find that shot he had in first season, look out. Looking forward to see what he can do, injury free, distraction free, and a full season under Tocchet.

I mentioned this before in another post. From 2014 to 2021 we had rookie NHL coaches. From there , we went to a Coach who is used to coaching veteran NHLers. Players such as Boeser and Horvat knew nothing other then what these guys taught them. They are seeing an entire different approach from the Coaches now. From the coaches all the way up, they have had success in the past. We have gone from almost a decade of no plan, to competent management who know what it takes to win. Benning and Co. did a lot of damage which is going to take time to fix.

I think that is what we have lacked for a while now, balance. Too many offensive minded players who are not willing to take care of other parts of their game which makes a team successful. I see Boeser trying to do that now, which is odd to see. As much as I would like to see these guys(Boeser ,AB ,Garland) remain on the team, something has to give with our Cap issue and right now we have an abundance of offensive minded Wingers who make a lot of money. I don't think its a luxury we can continue with. We will have Mik back and possibly Pearson next year so there will be a glutton of wingers to choose from.
-
I don't think they really wanted him in the first place, he didn't fit what we are trying to do here. We wanted to rid ourselves of the Country Club and I am pretty sure they knew he was a key part of that. The same with BB. When they first came here, he was not their Coach and it was only a matter of time before he was let go. I look at what a person DOES and not what he SAYS.

I agree, aside from the Kuz/Petey chemistry, that line didn't look too bad near the end of the season. As bad as Boeser has been playing the past few years, he looked decent on that line and was actually doing more then trying to check with his stick. I think PDG and Joshua both showed promise in the top six and may pan out.
-
Tocchet likes pairs and then he adds someone who will be on the boards with some grit(i.e. PDG,Mik,Joshua,Pearson). That leaves 2 positions(Wingers) to play alongside Petey and Miller. They tried different combinations and the only one that clicked on a regular basis was Petey and Kuz. Who will be with Miller? AB? Boeser? Garland? There is too much money tied up in these wingers. I don't think they want to pay these guys to be 3rd and 4th liners. I am sure they are being shopped and they will find the best deal to move on from them. No hurry so we can afford to wait it out.

The writing was on the wall long ago. All throughout his contract discussions he never mentioned that he wanted to retire as a Canuck. He always said, he left the discussions up to his agent and that he didn't want to talk about his contract throughout the regular season. I am thinking management was up front with him about what he is really worth and he didn't like that. He proceeded to go on a terror for the rest of the season, something we hadn't seen from Bo the 8 seasons before that. Now that he has gotten paid, back to the regular scheduled program. He never cared about the team(never took a pay cut), never cared about the players(never stuck up for them) and we seen how he felt about the fans. Pretty simple to see where this guy was really coming from TBH.

Very well said, Kuz is a young player who is new to the NHL and has won nothing yet, he has no pull when he is being challenged by a guy who has won a Stanley Cup. If he is not willing to sacrifice and do what is needed by him to help the team to win, then I guess we could probably get a good return for him if we wanted to.
-
This is what many don't get. They spelled it out for us and told us this is what they were doing in plain english. There is no hidden agenda. This team was broken and had no direction. We had the players running the show and no one willing to sacrifice to win. Some of that mentality still lingers but they are not done with the roster either. We seen a glimpse of what the new team can look like but it is definitely a work in progress. I didn't see it as a waste of a season but more like the beginning of something great coming down the road for this club in the near future.
-
What I don't get is that we already have a core in place, so we are going to get rid of them so there is a CHANCE we can get replacements for them? That's weird, and then, like you said, wait 10 years for that to happen? That's ridiculous. Benning failed with the BO/Boeser era and failed to build around Hughes/Petey/Demko. The problem we have is that JR and Co. are trying to rid themselves of JB's mistakes, not going to happen overnight, but I have confidence they will soon. Once they have a chance to fill the team with who they want, we are going to see an entirely different product on the ice. Myers is gone soon as is 2 of Boeser, AB and Garland. That will leave more then enough Cap space to get a 3C and whatever other bottom 6 forwards that don't pan out, another top 4 Dman and a back up goalie. After that , I see a bit of fine tuning to get the right line chemistry and balance within the line up. Having said all of this, I really don't see a big hurry in having all of the pieces in place right away. If we start making the playoffs and work towards being more consistent, I could see us being pretty close in a couple of years. At least we will see that the team is moving in the right direction and that we have a plan in place. Far different from the last decade where I had no idea what they were doing with this team.
-
I think this trade is vastly underrated by many. To trade a fan favorite and Captain of this team must have taken a lot courage. I am sure most of CDC wanted Miller traded and for Bo to stay. I for one, could say I finally feel confident in the direction this team is going. The players are no longer in charge and its play the right way or move on.

FINAL Canucks "Top DAWG" Report under Tocchet - Just released.
EdgarM replied to RU SERIOUS's topic in Canucks Talk
Well if you look at it in itself, sure, but if you include it with other player stats it makes perfect sense. You can have a player with lower DAWG scores but the ones with higher scores are obviously less "One Dimensional" Players. Would you rather have a player who can just score goals or would you rather have him have a more well rounded game? Say like a Miller who can also hit and stick up for other players(fight). I think it becomes more important when you look at the bottom 6 players who statistically have less offense in their game. If they aren't top DAWGS then they are probably pretty useless (i.e. PLUGS). We have had many of them over the years. Petey is a good example when it comes to a DAWG score. Obviously a key player on the team, but because he does other things, he is far more valuable. He is not one dimensional. Hughes gets a pass because he does other things so great. Although it would be great if he a had a partner who excelled in the areas he is weaker in. Unfortunately we have had players form the 1st line to the the 4th line, who had low DAWG scores. We also had leaders who lead in this department in the past. Not a recipe for success to say the least. -

I would be interested in seeing if they match him up with Hronek and I don't think anyone carry Myers, just pair him Burroughs or someone like him on the third pairing until he is gone. -

No argument here, like I said, he was pretty bad lately and yes, he should never have been traded for. Ultimately though, we are where we are, and we have to make the best of it. The worse he is, the worse he is for us all around. Either he is a serviceable top 4 or he doesn't cost us dearly to trade him off. He needs to improve and be better. With a structured system and a proper partner, I think he can be at least better then last year. I had another thought of him maybe feeling like he was playing second fiddle to Hughes, which I really hope is not the case with him. They both could be the main top defenseman and maybe OEL was promised that before he came here, who knows. I sure hope it gets worked out or we will be suffering the consequences for years to come. -

I don't mind Petey and Hughes being on the smaller side but everyone around them should be bigger players who can hold their own. We are not balanced. AB, Garland, Dries, Kuzmenko and to a lesser degree, Boeser, are not going to cut it in the playoffs. Our D are no better, who is going to protect Demko? The next few moves on the roster should be interesting. -

The part that you are over looking is what our players do to the opposition. If their star players have no worry of going into the corners or freewheeling in the offensive zone, we our not playing both sides of the puck adequately. Many look at the Sedins and said well they took hits and so they were fine. The part we overlook, is that they never laid out hits like Miller either. We need to have the ability to wear teams down, especially in a long drawn out series. Nazzy could never do that and either could Hank or Bo. Petey is not a big hitter, but he does do it, and that at least keeps his opposition on their toes, to a degree. I am really hoping Joshua is able to make the top 6 next year, as he would be the perfect compliment to our smaller, less aggressive players. Really it boils down to balance and its fine to have SOME smaller players but you have to balance that out with some bigger players on the line as well. -

I agree, Bear filled in adequately but he is not a top 4 moving forward. if he wants to be on the third pairing fine, but not much more then that. -

If you are going to live and die on the Benning thing you go right ahead. Does it help you if I say you are right? Some need that. But not sure you see the difference how Benning ran things and how these guys are? The Cup rings thing was just a part of the discussion but you go and make that your entire argument, don't care really . Of course they loved BB why wouldn't they, but was he the right guy for the job? Don't think so. These guys need to learn the basic structure to be successful in the NHL and that is what they are doing. Torts tried and failed but so far these guys look like they are responding. We still need to rid ourselves of excess baggage, but over all it looks to be pretty positive. -

I agree , he is capable but we will see if he is willing. Also, we have not gone after a player who is specific to what we have now its just been a mishmash and we throw them together to see what sticks. Tanev was the closest to having chemistry with Hughes. We have had nothing but offensive defenseman for the most part and I imagine that has caused misscommunications with our D pairings. No communication, no familiarity and no structure, bad combination for our D group. We know Hronek and Hughes will most likely be in the top 4, we just need to find players that can compliment them now. I hope OEL can form some chemistry with Hronek, otherwise, we are in big trouble and we will be stuck paying a guy like OEL in our third pairing. -

He failed with that team because they were the undisputed REGULAR SEASON champs and thats it. They didn't have what was needed to win more then that. They had a couple of good pieces but they didn't go to war together. What exactly did Benning do? Should we be talking about the stick boys on championship teams too? The Country Club has been here for a very long time and Torts was never going to teach them anything because the leadership did not back him up. This group IS backing up their coaches. Big difference. -

Yes so much so that many thought that body checks were extinct and stick checking was the way to go. Also, sticking up for your fellow team mate was ..............optional.
