Rutherford again criticizes Canucks structure: 'Something has to be fixed'
EdgarM replied to fivethej's topic in Canucks Talk
Thats just it though, so many close calls, but no result, just like the shootout. Maybe they were afraid of what would happen after the book was thrown at Myers for sure, but I would say that we can't have the ref dictate how we play the game. It hasn't helped us in the past. -

Is there anyone on this team willing to "Take the Bull by the Horns"? Anyone willing to go " Beast Mode"? A lot of "so-so" players but not many I would call Gamers. The last Preds game we played well until the Preds pushed back and started to get physical. That's when we gave up 2 quick goals and never recovered after that. We need a team that can step up when we run into adversity. -
Rutherford again criticizes Canucks structure: 'Something has to be fixed'

I fully agree, we look to others to lay blame but these players are not playing well and that's on them. The Coach and the majority of players were inherited and I believe at the beginning of his tenure they were evaluating so it hasn't been that long to try and get some major moves done. I actually like this open and honest approach with the fans, there usually seems to be so much secrecy around the team its like they hold some pretty top secret information or something. Paying customers deserve to know what's going on. I think he is trying to make the necessary changes but I imagine its not that easy, especially when they are not playing well at the moment. Who really wants them or have the ability to take on big contracts? I like how he is not allowing Bo to hold him for ransom and if he is not going to sign a reasonable contract then he can be moved like any other player. Team first, the way it should be. -

I think as the season progresses the way its going, anyone over 25-26 years old will be available to move. They can't rid themselves of another coach so roster changes will need to happen. -

This sounds like the same argument which kept the Sedins on this team way after they should have retired. Sometimes it's just time to move on. -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
EdgarM replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He was definitely our "Go to" guy for many seasons and our top centerman behind Hank but like you said we have Petey and Miller(before this season) who have joined the team since then. His Captaincy is still up in the air as he has not lead us to anything yet and might never. As this is his contract year, i fully expect him to go all out and produce more then his past 8 seasons. -

Yeah I think when they are looking at signing a new contract they look at his entire career and not just the last few games before its up. We all know pretty much every player spikes a bit at the end of their contracts. Its nothing new. -

Bo is not the "be all to end all". We have not done well since he joined the team. He is great player no doubt, but we are not all of a sudden going to be a worse team without him in the line up. The big part of this team right now is inconsistency and Bo is not immune to that. -

I am not sure of that, he is having an off year so far and is still scoring at close to a point per game. Imagine if he was on his game right now. -

Meh, its pretty convenient to be padding the stats at the same time your contract is up. Besides, he is a streaky player and I believe the numbers will even out by the end of the season anyway. -

I like this however I think Bear is in the age category where he would be a serviceable dman down the road. -

I don't know I think there is a lot of speculation on your part on what sequence of events are going to happen with this team. I think the plan by management was to have most of the team in the 25-26 year old range. To me, that is some what of a plan and JR did say if this does not work out with these guys that he may have to change it up. I would think more of the lines that if we get to that point, anyone over 26 years old is fair game for a trade but that would still leave us with good bones to work with. This would include Petey and Kuzmenko, which are looking like where are future is heading to. To build around them as our top line and have Hughes and Demko, would be the common sense thing to do. There are a couple of others in that age range who may stick around as well. I am thinking its going to take a lot of good management skills to get the team down to those bare bones levels though IMO. -

I thought Miller and Demko had the mental fortitude last year and now it seems even they are not immune to it. Maybe its contagious. -

We also had players who had no intention of helping the team out at all. The Sedins and Edler refused to move and Tanev, Markstrom did us no favors either. Hansen and Burrows were the only ones with character and leadership who "took one for the team". We need more Burrows/Hansen type players on this team. -

We have always lacked the critical pieces of a successful team; Character and Leadership. Your team can have all the talent in the world but they are nothing without these. -
[Discussion] Do You Have the Stomach For a Rebuild?
EdgarM replied to Warhippy's topic in Canucks Talk
This would be nice! We go into drafts with nothing more then drafting the "Best Player Available" and then we let go of players at the end of their contracts, for nothing! Then, we end up with a team with No RHD, No energy guys who can check, PK or take face offs. We do not develop our youth properly or compliment our team with character players with good leadership qualities. ..................and we wonder why we are where we are at today. A plan from start to finish would be essential in building a winning team. Maybe they have no idea what the Ingredients are needed to build such a team? I don't know. -

I agree, what happened to rewarding good play and not for poor play? Whether its the power play, or a line or a starting line up. This has been a TG and a BB issue. -

I have been saying for awhile now, its the character and leadership of this team, and its been that for decades. Look at our history. When we had character and leadership, we had a team which played BETTER in the playoffs then the regular season. Since then, we have been the exact reverse of that. We had great players that could not excel in the playoffs. We had Cloutier, Naslund, Luongo, the Sedins etc. Great players who could not "UP" their games in the post season. Linden and Bure were the last that could accomplish this and more so Linden who has lead his team with great character, which is well documented. Another trait this team has possessed for decades is the ability to beat the top teams on any given night and then the next game lose to the lowly teams of the league. This has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with the character make up of the team IMO. Look what happens when there is pressure inflicted on the team, we flounder. Whether its a team that comes at us with speed and pressure or a team gets physical with us or they just plain out work us. We don't answer back. We also have one gear and that's it, it never changes. We should be playing with far more urgency right now, due to our slow start, but no we remain the same pace always. Right now, we are playing as individuals for the most part and it makes it look like we are lost and confused out there. There is no cohesion what so ever and I can't remember when I seen any player smiling on that bench. We need to move some players, not because they lack talent its because the chemistry and make up of the team is off. I agree with the one poster saying to give Schenn the Captaincy and get these players playing on the same page. This team seems frustrated and that has carried over from last season. I have said many times that Hank and Nazzy would have been far better off if they didn't have to carry the responsibility of leading the team and should have been left to other players such as Jovo, Ohlund , Kessler or Burrows. I think Bo still might make a great Captain but he should not have modeled his style completely the same as Hank IMHO. They are two completely different type of players. I am OK with completely gutting the whole team, if that's what its going to take to get character and leadership back on this team. -
yeah I don't think the answer is to try match speed for speed I think we need guys like Schenn to slow the smaller quicker players down. The last few games I did see us attempting to do just that. It helps to have Myers back in this regard too. For years we have allowed smaller quicker players to feast on points with us. I am hoping we are trending away from this, finally.

I would argue that this has been the issue for decades, mentally and physically weak I would also add that the leadership lacked these mostly since Linden. These were most noticeable in the post season but like this year and last, it is occurring in the regular season. We went through decades where we had a strong team in the regular season which choked in the post season. 2011 was a good example of this. This team is difficult to access because they are much more capable of what we are seeing but the mental toughness is disguising their real capabilities. As much as I would like to keep some favorite players, i believe it is necessary to rid ourselves of this leadership group and start over. Not because they are bad players but because it needs a clean slate where the core can develop their own Culture IMHO.

Yeah I have to side with DLC on this one. He was the only consistent player ALL YEAR last year. The rest only came around when BB came. We do have others who are struggling like Boeser, Demko and Hughes also. Things are amiss on the team and its difficult to say what it really is at this point. Could be coaching strategies, line combos, player conditioning, mental toughness, lack of leadership or a combination of all of it. I am thinking that their might even be a sickness floating around, who knows. I hope it gets figured out ASAP and the team can move forward from this.

This is not a coaching issue, this is Torts all over again.A bunch of pouty, poor me, over paid sad example of hockey players taking their sticks and going home. These guys can't even change their brutal entitlement on the PP and stay on for almost the full 2 minutes. This has been like this for a long time. Thye need to go ASAP.
