Striking a balance on the team is key and some nights we may require bigger bodies who can dig the puck out of the corners. Pearson is probably one of the better players that can do that playing in the top 9. I can see a lot of Pearson digging out the puck from the corner, passing it to Miller and Miller setting up Boeser for the Goal this year.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
EdgarM replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well that is the big question isn't it. The real Bo will show it self once we see what happens with him and his next contract. If he has the character and the want to stay here and win a Cup, like many on here believe, then he will find a way to come to terms with the Canucks and agree to a reasonable contract. We all know he is going to make millions of dollars no matter what he decides, so we will see what his priorities are soon enough. Leadership comes in all different forms and we have seen a few on this team already, as you mentioned, who "left money on the table". -
If Boes has gotten his killer wrist shot back , I can see some good things come from him this year.

I am pretty sure its been stated before that our "for sure" NO GO's are Pettersson, Hughes and Demko. Others are debatable but those three are ones that we could probably classify as "Untouchable". -

I actually think both Miller and Bo lack that handle and the reason why we need a true 3C on our roster. Miller and Petey are going to get the points but we need a good 4m dollarish defensive Center to play behind Petey and Miller. If we don't have Petey or Miller, then Bo is definitely our #2 C. We have the key positions taken care of in a Goalie, PMD Dman and top 2 Centers. Yes we argue about that shutdown Dman that is needed but i think its just a matter of time before we put the final pieces of the puzzle together. -

No I think many of us know exactly what we want in a Captain. I think you miss the point, you say he "sticks up for his teammates", but we have seen examples where he doesn't. He doesn't need to be the highest scorer or be intimidating but he does have to lead by example and be consistent at performing on the ice(lead by example). He doesn't have to fight but he has to get involved when one of his team mates is getting roughed up by the opposing team. He has been on occasion, done some very good things, but then , games where he has done nothing. he didn't inspire his team nor did he stick up for them. Then he interviews and says we "need to be better". OK, then show us Cappy! The same pattern we have seen for decades and nothing to show for it. Some of us are just looking for a change and maybe it leads us to a Cup one day. -

I actually think this has been a bit confusing for the team since Miller came. Miller and Bo have much the same roles, including face off deployment, which leads to no specific 3C. I think there needs to be a reallignment where we have the roles more spelled out. I am really glad we don't have TG's mish mash line ups anymore, those were so confusing. -

Oh I have. I wouldn't even care if he didn't fight, just show up. I love him as a player, not so much as a leader. Same as Nazzy and Hank. They would have been much better off being left to do what they do best and not have the responsibility of other duties. -

Yeah, REGULAR SEASON GAMES! Keeping calm has never been an asset to us in the playoffs. Players have been hurt over the years including Daniel, Naslund, Boeser and Petey. Teams have manhandled us over the years such as the Bruins or Ferlund's Flames. I want a Captain who will go to War for his team mates and not say "Lets get back at them on the PP boys". ...............that'll show them. If they are going to go down, I want to see them go down with a fight. -

This also continues on to the post season which many see as the more critical issue. The sample size of Bo's performance in the playoffs is small and he would have to show he is more like Linden and less like Naslund/Sedin when it comes to playoff performance. This would include the ability to get your team to play through adversity when it looks like there is nothing left to do. The 94 playoffs gave me the feeling that they were never out it from game 1 with Calgary to game 7 with the NYRs. Any playoff series with Nazzy or Hank or Bo had games where we were not going to win the game and there was no one on the team who was going to change that. Linden was also lucky though to have good veteran leadership like Babych, Hunter, Courtnall and Adams. He also had a guy(Bure) that was a threat to score every time he was on the ice, which helped. -

This is my take on a player like Bo as well. Last year was a good example for the inconsistency. Why did it take a new coach to get the players to improve their play as opposed to the Captain having some kind of influence on them? We seen Miller play through the adversity and still produce while many of the rest of the top 6 struggled and failed to produce. One of the main reasons that I wanted to see Miller resigned. I have seen Bo play great and be a real leader, but like you said, there were many nights where they just didn't push the play and he had interviews where he said that they "need to be better" but I didn't see him lead by example many nights. I do hope that if he is resigned, that there is an improvement in this regard and he leads this team to something special. -

So why are you asking me how he is going to be deployed? I am not the coach. Is there a magic number(face off percentage) he is to reach in order to be a center? It is a question that has to be considered though is what are the plans for Petey. If he is just going to be a winger, like you say, and utilized as a Center on a occasion then yes that makes Bo all the more important to remain on the team, but what if that is not the plan? At some point , we are going to have to decide what to do with 3 very capable centers. I think if Bo comes in at a reasonable contract, then this is all mute and we are very lucky to have these 3 as our centers. But because there are a lot of unanswered questions, this idea should at least be considered. Just like a lot on here were adamant that Miler was getting traded, I don't think we can say for certain that Bo is 100% going to be resigned. -

7+ Million? I think it also depends on the price tag for a third line center. -

Oh so Petey is no longer considered a "Center" anymore? Really? First I heard of that. I believe he is playing wing until he makes the transition to the top center position. I see the natural transition from Miller to Petey as to eventually taking over #1C. -

EdgarM replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I agree this is the big question mark. Petey is being paid as a top center but he still needs to work on things such as face offs so when would he make that transition ,if at all, to the center position. Right now, the logical step is to play him on Miller's wing until such time he is ready to take on more responsibilities. The problem is, if we are going to sign Bo to a long contract extension too, what happens when Petey is ready to be the #1 Center and we have 2 more then capable Centers behind him who are making pretty good money. I guess we could put one of them on the wing as well, somewhere down the road. -

Considering how much we are already paying our other top centers, what would you realistically pay for the third one? -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
EdgarM replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That's the problem right there! He is just "OK" and therefore he is not a #1 Center and 2 others who are likely above him in the role. What we need is a great 3C which is not going to cost us 7 million dollars. What we really need is a Sutter/Malhotra type player. It's similar to our concern on the D core. We have 3 highly paid LD's with a deficit on the right side. Its about BALANCE. If he is willing to play on a team friendly contract then great, if not, well then I think the obvious thing to do is explore other options. We have a year to figure that out and a lot can happen between now and then. -

This. Having a true 3C would align things more evenly/balanced. -

I would say Miller helped Boeser out of his funk last year much more then Bo did. I have said before Petey is the big question mark. He is being paid and is expected to be our top center. Yes he has not shown to be able to take that spot yet but when would he be considered our #2 center and making his way to the #1 spot? I believe it would be natural for him to transition from the #2 spot to the #1 spot when Miller goes on his decline as he ages. Bo has been the go to guy as we have not had anyone for years to do that role. He had to take the heavy load when the Sedins were still here. I think Miller is more then capable of handling more of Bo's minutes. Why would that be in question? He is bigger, stronger, quicker and much stronger along the boards. He kills penalties so he can play defense. He can obviously take face offs. Bo is put on a pedestal because he has been doing it since back when the team had much less depth. I think we are at a point now that we need to see what are "nice to have's" and what are serious needs are. We have two highly paid centers and the same with wingers. We all know what the needs are so I can see moves being made when they become available. -

The things that also need to be considered is what happens when Petey is ready for prime time and is able to take face offs on a regular basis? Miller is above Bo in the pecking order and Petey will be the "Go To" Guy in a few years. That is your 1 and 2 guys taking most of the ice time and face offs. Bo becomes a very expensive third option. Bo has been great over the years and has filled in admirably, especially in some of the lean years, but he is being surpassed over those who have come after him. I understand the emotional attachment to some players but I personally look at the over all construction of the team as a whole. The same happened with the Sedins. If they were split up and taken off the top line, they would have been very serviceable players to the team as whole. Unfortunately that's not what happened though. -

I did too when he first came on the scene, however, I have seen more and more of a Hank type in him lately. He doesn't hit much and i have seen him skate away from scrums, not something i think a leader should be doing. He does have Linden's drive come playoff time, which is great though. -

I agree, I always thought the "Core" consisted of your Top Center, Top D and your Goalie. I see Miller as #2 as he is signed long term and Petey obviously our long term #1. That leaves Bo. It definitely is "up in the air" until he actually signs.
