[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Didn't BOTH COACHES have the exact same dilemmas you explain above? Yet one had a way better Win/Loss record then the other? -

You really seem to know what the magic recipe is for success. Yet you fail to look at the obvious of just plain "Winning" Games. Does it really matter how you win those games? On any given night, I believe most teams can beat another team in the NHL. We are lucky in that we have a quality goalie like Demko. Teams like Edmonton and Toronto would kill to have him. Not to mention we have him at a reasonable cap hit as well. He easily saves us 5 million in cap compared to other top goalies. A Coach is just as important as your top player on your team and last year that showed. I don't know how you don't see that. Keep improving your team from the year past and eventually you will find the right combination to success. We have been doing that with the accumulation of the core we have now. Not perfect but I feel more confident with players like Petey, Hughes and Miller on this team. We have excess baggage that needs to be trimmed on this team but like others have said, that doesn't necessarily need to be Miller. -

This is what some don't get. There seems to be a thought that there is a "cookie cutter" to success. Some teams have one player who makes 12-13 mill(McDavid) or a goalie who makes 10 mill(Bob/Vasil). We are lucky to have a quality goalie who makes half of some of the top goalies in which we could use elsewhere. By not having to pay a Bobrovsky and a McDavid easily saves us 9-10 million. That leaves a lot of room to add a quality player to our roster. Say like a Miller? There is more then one way to skin a cat. -

The only positive in this plan as opposed to now is that Hughes and Petterson will be closer to their prime years. The rest get a bit older or we don't even know they will be here by then. The article says we aren't ready now but in 2 years we will be. The problem is that there is no argument as to WHY this is to occur. I am thinking by that time, this team will look completely different and only a few players will remain from this roster. My biggest concern is some of these players are ready NOW, such as Demko and Hughes and we are going to waste away valuable time with them because we already have the mind set that we are not ready to compete for the Cup. Luckily we didn't tell that to Bure or Linden when they were very young and made it to the finals. -

Yeah I don't think his defense is that good, LOL. I just think he would be better as an aging vet then the Sedins. His ability to throw checks, kill penalties, skate adequately, take face offs and provide leadership will allow him to work his way down the line up and still be effective. I think with the Sedins when they lost their skating quickness they also lost the ability to do other things quickly. They were so quick at times that people thought they had eyes in the back of their heads. Once that ability to make plays like that waned, they had a hard time being effective. I really wished they had been moved down the line up and split up later in their careers. Their intelligence(hockey sense) along with stronger and faster line mates would have been fun to watch. -

I don't think there was any mention of a "Great" defensive player only that he actually played defense such as checking and playing on the PK. The Sedins never came off the top line or killed any penalties. Could you see them playing on the third or fourth lines? that was the argument. -

I don't think anyone is saying sign the guy at all costs. Obviously there is a limit and none of us no where they are in those discussions. If he doesn't want to be here or he is asking for too much ,then obviously we will need to get what we can for him. -

I am not sure if I see that way. I think the biggest question mark lies with Petterson. Is he ready for the #1 C job? or will he need more seasoning? If he is ready, then Miller is irrelevant and we go Petey and Bo. If Petey is not ready, then we will need Miller and then Bo becomes irrelevant. Miller is the #1 C and Petterson is #2 until he is ready. With the delay in both Miller and Bo's signings, I really think this is a real concern that management must work through. Although it would be great to have all 3 , I don't think it would work out cap wise in the long run. -

LE was similar to the Sedins, he was useless too. Seriously though, he was a huge anomaly in which I don't think anyone could have predicted he would drop off the cliff like that. I would say it had to do with his mental toughness though. Some players fight through adversity and others just roll over and die. I don't think Miller is that type of player though he seems to be able to produce even when everything else around him is not doing well, like the beginning of last season? -

Well that's the big question and we may never know. Obviously the numbers and term need to be something that makes sense for both sides and I think we are finally past the NTC's that has handcuffed us in the past. -

That's like comparing apples to oranges. The Sedins were very one dimensional and were not strong skaters to begin with. Once they slowed down and stopped producing , they were rendered basically useless. They didn't play defense or kill penalties. They didn't even check. Miller will bring other skills to the table much like Linden, Iginla and Messier did in their latter years in the league, once his point production slows down. -

You could actually argue that if you assemble a team that YOU THINK can win it all for you, it still might not happen, there are no guarantees to anything. I agree about the Bure comment. Same with the WCE and with the Sedins. The truth of the matter is, it might just come down to the "will" and "mental toughness" of your team as a group. When we have seen unlikely heroes come out of playoff runs did anyone predict who they were going to be? We expect the usuals to "UP" there game in the playoffs and lead the team to victory. Sometimes that doesn't happen. Some say some of our players are NOT in their prime ,but, was Bure? was Linden? I believe they were both very young when they took their team to the finals. Remember Cloutier was supposed to take us to the promised land? or Luongo? Sometimes you can put all the pieces together and still not have the right combination. There are so many variables that come in to play the best you can do is enter each season with the best possible team you can assemble and see what happens. -

That is exactly what I mean by difference maker, a player who can contribute even when not producing points is what is needed on this team. He was deployed all over the place and could this have contributed to the inconsistent point production. His ability to control play in the O zone is a treat to watch and once he has regular line mates who can read from each other, I think you will see an even more productive player. It would be nice to see him on the #1 PP too but that is up to the coach. Poolman and Dickinson on the other hand?.................... -

It seems many other teams find ways to rid themselves of these guys, sometimes I am surprised that some that seem immovable, are some how moved. Especially teams like Tampa, who are in extreme Cap trouble, some how slip out of it some how. Right now we have an excess of quality wingers and so if we are looking at filling holes, these are what we would use IMO. -

I totally agree, we shouldn't be looking at players we need rather look at what does not fit. Garland is a difference maker when it counts and we have guys on this team who contribute nothing almost on a nightly basis. Good teams make cap room for needed players like Garland and get rid of excess baggage like Dickie and Poolman. I am sure when injuries develop and teams need replacements, guys like Dickie and Poolman might be a little easier to move. This is probably the more likely scenario as opposed to try and get rid of a player such as Garland to free up Cap space. -

I picked up on that as well and I had the same feeling when watching last season. When a team gives up and puts in minimal effort , you know something is going on with the team dynamics. Miller continued to put up points while the majority of the rest of the team were just "going through the motions" so to speak. The same happened when the team gave up on Tortorella, you could see that minimal effort was being put forward for all to see. I still think there is something happening between Bo and Miller and maybe the reason why they both are sitting without a contract right now. They both conduct the same functions on the team which probably sees them not seeing "eye to eye" on a lot of issues. The bench didn't look like they were having fun at the beginning of the season and I think things didn't change much when BB came other then he lightened up the mood a little where they performed better then they were before he came. I think management is leaning towards keeping Bo instead of Miller and the interview kinda reinforced that. Miller stated it was basically in managements hands and their "vision" was going to dictate whether he stayed or not. I could be wrong, but I think there has been something amiss for a few years now since Miller arrived and we will see once the team decides who is staying and who will be moving on. I prefer its Miler who is staying but would be Ok with Bo staying too if they figure out the dynamics on the team and they play more cohesive and play with more "fire" more consistently. I also wish that the saying "Country Club" is in no way associated with this team moving forward. I sure do miss the days of Stan Smyl and the "Plumber" days, those were the days. -
This is what I see making the most sense as well. As the years progress, Petey would take over the #1 spot and Miller would move down., but we would have 2 potent offensive centers for a few years. I am interested to see how Lazar plays this year and how he is deployed.
-
We all have our own opinions and obviously we have different ones. The "Culture Club" mentality exists and has been documented. If Bo is not a part of that then fine, but somehow I think he is a part of it. I am not of the belief that we stand by and make the other teams take penalties while we get beat upon. It has never helped us and many of our players have been injured because of it. I do want a Linden or Smyl type Captain again and find a team with that kind of style of play way more enjoyable to watch, especially in the playoffs.
-
I think a bigger return can be had by trading Horvat over Miller. Some teams may be looking for someone younger.
-
This. It seems there is a divide still on the team and this won't disappear until one them leave. It does appear that management sees this and is looking at keeping Horvat. I guess we will see who gets signed first. I , for one, like Millers leadership more over Bo though. Bo is a cookie cutter of Hank before him and Nazzy before that. We were not successful in the playoffs with that mentality. Miller plays a different game then that and shows more emotion. He admits he needs work with controling it but at least he shows he cares about losing and playing a "Full" game. A problem this team has been plagued with for years. This is why I felt that Kessler might have been a better leader when he was here. Remember the Nashville series? I am just ready for change and this probably won't happen until Horvat leaves. I want to back a team that has no more excuses to fall back on.

I agree, there is a lot of "this is going to happen and that is going to happen" but no one really knows for sure except for Miller and Management. What I do know is that usually these things get dragged out ,but, at the end of the day, the player usually stays and some compromise is met. We are a long ways away from the trade deadline so there really is no real panic to have any resolution at this stage of the game. That doesn't stop many of us for having our own "OPINIONS" though. -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

My thoughts too. I see this all the time where we become "Homers" and we over value our players way too much. My thoughts are always going to be, its game 7 in the SC finals and who do I want on the ice, who is going to be the game changer? Who is going to go "Beast Mode"? We have had great players over the years but who is going to step up and go above and beyond and carry this team on their shoulders? Especially in the post season? If I look at the team now? I see Petey, Hughes, Demko and Miller as having that ability. Bo? Maybe, but I have seen him do nothing for long stretches where as Miller consistently leads the team and does not let adversity get in the way. I have seen Bo skate away from scrums, let players like Boeser and Petey get manhandled and nothing happens to the perpetrators. If you are going to go to war, who would you follow, Miller or Bo? If the direction is to resign Bo and trade Miller, I am with SilentSam in that we will probably see the "same ol' same ol' " we have seen from this team for decades and we will go into the playoffs and win a round or two and then bow out to a team that is way more hungrier and resilient. This movie has been played before way too many times. -
My bad your right, the poster gave the edge to JT

Who cares about Bergeron isn't this a Canuck board? After 2011, I don't give a R@ts @ss about anyone with a 'B' on their Jersey.
