The Current Construction of the Vancouver Canucks
EdgarM replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
That's actually a very good comparison, I thought early on that Bo had some Linden like tendancies. If Bo can step up in the "sticking up for his players" role and produce a little more offensively, I would be OK with him taking on the 1C duties until Petey is ready. -

Those are good points to bring up. Will Petey take over the face offs Miller was responsible for when he leaves? If Bo remains Captain, will the "Culture" of the team change? I really wish Bo wasn't the Captain just as I thought Hank would have been much better off without that responsibility. He would have been way better off sticking to his offensive game as I think Nazzy would have been better off too. No disrespect to them, as I thought they were great players for us who had unbelievable skills. -

There was no comparison made I was just trying to clarify your assumption of over 30 wingers who were basically useless in your mind or close to it. Its not copping out but just getting tired of your obvious attempt to win the argument. Constantly changing the bar to fit your needs is an obvious attempt to win the argument. I know the more I respond you will have no choice but to have the "Last Word" every time. .......BUT, You won't be able to help yourself will you? -

That's my thoughts as well. Bo has always had that dilemma throughout his career. Although he would be great as our 2C , that would mean Petey would have to be ready for prime time and carry the brunt of the offensive minutes. Can he handle all of the face offs? Can he handle bigger, more experienced 1C's, on a regular basis? The big question is who would fit the 1C role , Bo/Miller, until Petey is ready to handle that responsibility. Then we would need a replacement for Sutter at the 3C position. -

Its way over your head Dude, leave it alone. The conversation has gone way off track. Pearson is not even worth arguing about, to tell you the truth. -

Do you think Petey is ready for the 1C position? If not, is Bo going to be our 1C until he is ready? -

Oh man you mean I didn't pick the right "over the hill" 30 year old, or older, wingers for you? Dude! my bad. Pearson's salary for a .5 pt guy is pretty good for 3 million. For 2 more years to take him to the "over the hill" age of 31. Your going way off base to your original statement of 30 year old wingers being pretty much done and have no place in the NHL. You said: "How many slow 2nd line 20 goal scorers play into their 30s these days?" and "I told you facts. Career 2nd line wingers over 30 are unheard of. Cogliano is the only one i can think of and he is crazy fast. " Once again, I really don't care if we move him or keep him but we have bigger issues to contend with on this team. -

There are some Wingers his age or older who do pretty good still. Some wingers that age or older of note: Kucherov , Huberdeau , Landeskog , Stone , Tarasenko ,Hall, Panarin ,Kreider, Marchessault , Pacioretty ,P. Kane, Marchand and Ovechkin. Ovechkin being 36-37 and Marchand at 34-35 , I don't think Pearson is quite at the end of the road just yet at 29. But again, who really cares at the end of the day when we have bigger fish to fry. -

2nd line? has he turned 30 yet(he's 29)? regressing(consistent .5 avg)? Cash strapped? I think we have about 27 million in cap space next year and we have a few million this year + 3.5 LTIR from Ferlund. Again he is not ideal but the least of our worries. He is about the only one that can go in the boards and retrieve the puck. He is not the best at it but a lot better then most of the rest on the team. I get the feeling you don't like him and that's fine, I just think he is much a priority as you think to get rid of. -

Your very right, we have lacked "Sandpaper" for decades now. I think any player we accumulate at this point HAS TO HAVE SIZE,SPEED AND GRIT to play with our smaller, skilled players or players who lack at least a bit of Sandpaper. Probably the main reason why we have succeeded in the regular season all these years and not so much in the post season. -

??? His point production has been pretty much the same the entire time he has been with us and his career is almost over? He's 29? Right now, he is about the only one who brings any kind of size and grit in the top 9. He is the least of our worries at this point. -

I think you are right on the money Slapshot. More specifically, we cannot keep Petey, Miller and Bo as our centers, that will need to change(neither are 3rd line centers or are paid like it). Also, having Boeser and Garland are redundant and there is a serious need to add speed, size and grit in the top 9. Also, like many have alluded to, we need that RHD and probably 2 of them. Ideally to solve the issue we could trade Miller/Bo for one of them and Garland/Boeser for the other, in a perfect world. Like you said, Hogs may fill the bill, but again he falls into that smallish forward and will need size around him to be successful. -
We do not need to tear it down OR make big trades
EdgarM replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
I am not trying to prove anything it is your argument we are discussing. You are saying a team needs to "Tank" to be successful. I think we can agree there is examples of it helping and examples where it didn't. You are thinking a team follows a certain plan when in reality they may just be taking what is actually available to them and nothing else. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors so we are entirely speculating. Again, I believe there is no magical recipe its just being smart of how you do business and managing your assets and liabilities. Other then picking "Top 5" , those teams did a heck of a lot more then that, they built quality teams around them, that's the key. We have Petey ,Hughes and Demko and now the key is to build a team that compliment these guys. Get D who can help Demko out, get bigger ,stronger ,faster forwards to play with Petey and a good defensive D man to play with Hughes and OEL. The problem is that we need to accomplish this while getting rid of Benning's excess baggage. I trust the new management will do their best to accomplish this though. Its funny you question players such as Demko and Hughes when teams like Edmonton and Toronto would kill to have a goalie like Demko and we have never had a PMD like Hughes, EVER, on this franchise. We have waited a long time for a player like this. -
(Rumour) Canucks targetting Copp, Mikheyev, and Lazar
EdgarM replied to theo5789's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I agree, I am looking at different qualities other then AGE. We need more speed, size, sandpaper, etc. I think GENERALLY we want to be younger but I don't think its realistic to believe every player on the team is going to fall in that age range. I think JR and Alvin are smart enough to make deals which make sense and leave the ones that don't. -

Even you don't sound so sure about yourself Alf. Top 5 , so like McDavid/Draisaitl or Eichel/Dahlin? or how about Matthews/Marner? Even with the Twins we didn't do much other then win some Presidents cups. What would we have been able to do if we had Kessler as the Captain and we actually gave him a credible winger and we had more sandpaper on the team. Instead we put everything on the shoulders of the Twins and Luongo and look what happened. Again, any of these guys are not going to do much unless they have a credible team around them. This is why teams like Colorado and Tampa are so successful, they have others who will step up when the top guys aren't going. In 2011, the Twins were shut down and we had no one who stepped up. You could say the same for Toronto or Edmonton. With a 23 man roster, 2 or 3 guys are not going make much of a difference if the other 20 guys are doing nothing. Just saying. -

EdgarM replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
Why isn't it relevant?, you are talking about a team "Tanking" and these team certainly did that. The only difference is that you mentioned the successful tankers and left out the ones that were not so successful. Then you complain about our core not being good enough? You are all over the place man. -

EdgarM replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
Oh! so you are going to pick and choose top picks now? .....I see. What about Draisaitl and McDavid? You seem to think there is some magical recipe for success. With so many moving parts, there is no way you could make the right decisions every step of the way. We are talking a decade or more of decisions and that is asking a lot for a club to be right every time. The teams we mentioned are perfect examples of failures and successes. I believe Buffalo follows the recipe you are talking about and they don't seem to be doing all that well. The teams you are talking about have built the proper players around their top players and I think that is more of a key then what your core is. What if Toronto and Edmonton had a goalie and half decent defenseman? What if we had more team toughness in 2011? You like to mock others thoughts of success when I don't think you really know yourself. I think it would be best to "agree to disagree" IMO. -

EdgarM replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
I would disagree with this statement, Petey, Hughes and Demko are a pretty good start to this rebuild. Its what's been built around them that is concerning. Is Bo a #1? #2? or the #3 Center? Will Miller resign at a reasonable rate? Will Boeser regain what he was when he first came into the league? Will OEL produce closer to what he did in Arizona? We definitely have spots on the roster to be filled and personnel that need to be gone, period. I think the assessment of the team is complete and now the question is how do we get rid of certain players and acquire players needed to improve this team. Ideally they would be younger so that this team can grow together but I am thinking we are going to have to fill spots with personnel who are not ideal with this plan, its the nature of the beast. We can all say we should get this player or get that player and trade this player and get rid of this player but we know it is far more complicated then that. That's why I don't believe in labels like "Rebuild" or "Retool", rather then make the team as best as you can with the resources you have at the time. Trade, Sign, Draft or WHY. I think what we can all agree on is that we have players on the roster who are over paid for their role on the team. This needs to be adjusted if we hope to build a competitive team. I don't think we should be doing transactions just for the sake of making changes either. If a deal makes sense, then fine, but giving players away for cheap or signing players to unrealistic deals is counter productive. I see a lot of fans get emotionally attached to certain players, which is fine, but when that player does not make sense being on the team, they need to see that it may be best that he plays elsewhere. I am interested to see what this new management team have in store for us in the next few months. We need to be faster, stronger and some of the excess fat needs to be trimmed ASAP. -

I guess all of us see differently what is best for the team. No doubt, Bo is a great player and he may improve his numbers over time. Overall, this team needs more sandpaper and this starts with the leadership on the team. I am not convinced that Bo is that player after watching him for the past 8 seasons. He is much like Hank but without the Offense that he provided. We will see who is more interested in more money then to building a winning team. If that's Bo ? fine, but I am hoping that a deal can be made with Miller on a reasonable contract extension, and if not, we will look elsewhere. -

EdgarM replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
That's the best way to put it Alf, I am OK with whatever deal makes us a stronger team overall. The team will be built around those three and the team around them will depend on what kind of deals management can make that makes the most sense. -

The "Sandpaper" department has been hard to come by for this team for quite a awhile now. I sure hope we definitely fill those roles. No more MR. NICE GUY! -

Yeah I am not too sure and I believe management has the belief that they don't make decisions on players based on the popularity vote. I like Bo but I am not sure he is the one to lead this team into battle. When the team was down and out at the beginning of the season last year, Miller was the one of the only forwards who remotely looked liked he could play through that adversity. I am not sure we can keep Bo because he is a Nice Guy and he is good at face offs. You need to lead by example and produce and inspire your team through the adversity IMO.
