We do not need to tear it down OR make big trades
EdgarM replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
Yes very true but we still can't pay 3 centers that kind of money and Petey is not ready to be thrown the reigns just yet. We need the 3rd and 4th lines having a lot more defensive responsibilities then they have been the last few years. Horvat just adds to that confusion as to who is responsible defensively and who is to provide the offense. Both Petey and Miller are penalty killers so we will still have that in tact. I still think the logical step is to keep Miller and move Bo. -

Yes I am optimistic as well, I still remember seeing the Sedins when they first came in to the league and I was very skeptical of them being able to gain some muscle too. They were kids playing amongst men! -

Yes I agree he is still a very valuable player to any team , I just think he doesn't fit on this team, in the grand scheme of things. He really should be the #2 centre on any team, period. I really would like to see Petey get a little stronger, and this would probably help his face off ability as well. I just don't see that yet and I do agree he should take another big step next year, especially with no injuries and a proper training camp. -

I know this is not going to be popular with many of you but I really think Horvat is our "Odd Man Out" when it comes to "Centres". When we look at the roles they play, Petterson will be our #1 centre but not right now. Bo is not a #1 Centre but Miller is. Miller is only 2 years older then Bo and both are over JR's 26 year old bench mark. We are basically paying way too much for a 3rd line centre in which Bo would be for the next couple of years. Also, Petey is not ready to be a #1 centre quite yet as faceoffs is one thing that needs much improvement from him. The logical thing to do would be to pay Miller as our #1 until Petey is ready to take over. I think the time frames would favor these two players switching roles in a few years. I think also, with the concern over the Country Club atmosphere, a change of Captaincy would wipe the slate clean and truly bring in a "New Era" to this hockey club. The other logical move would be to move Myers, as some have already indicated. Our PMD our Hughes and OEL, we do not need a third one , especially for what his salary is. If Myers played with a little bit of snarl on a regular basis, then I would say keep him, but that's not the case. I am skeptical of Boeser's status on the team as well, due to his foot speed, but I think the other two issues need to be addressed first and foremost in order for this team to progress further into a Cup Contender. -
Thoughts and prayers to the Boeser Family. Hoping they find the strength being with each other to get through the coming days. RIP Duke.

Been saying this for ever, our core players have had the same culture for decades. The "gentlemanly" play have been passed on down from Captain to Captain and leaders to leaders. We are seeing a difference(i.e. Garland,Miller) because they do not come from the same. I believe the last coaches carried the same philosophy as well. This past season looked like what a real NHL team should look like and it was definitely a sight for sore eyes. I believe that the management see this and will make changes accordingly. If players like Bo/Boeser need to go, then so be it.
-
Yeah I get that feeling too. Many of our physical players lost their grittiness once they got here. I am thinking the last couple of coaches had a big say in that. Both of them had me scratching my head on many occasions. BB is definitely a breath of fresh air for this Canuck fan.
-
I totally agree, the finesse gets us to the playoffs and then we get man handled in the playoffs from there. So looking forward to a team that can play "any game thrown at them" including the grittiness of playoff hockey. Good times are ahead. Also, the big reason why Myers is not as effective as he could be. If he played remotely like Pronger, then his name would not be brought up in trade talks all of the time. He has the capabilities to play a much more aggressive/physical game which he has actually shown signs of in the past.

We are witnessing a minor miracle in how this team has basically turned into a "hockey team" right before our eyes. I honestly counted out many of these guys because they lacked so many attributes to be able to compete in this league. Now I see them competing hard every night, hitting, fore checking, back checking and playing defensively responsible hockey. Miller still has his moments but he is nothing like he was even a few months ago. I don't know what he did to them or what he said to them and I don't really care, he got the job done. I see BB as a building block for this team and it would be a shame to see him go. I would like to, at least, like to see what he can do for a full season and see if this recipe for success continues right in to the playoffs. I bet it does.

Bes is the odd guy out and will most likely the one on his way out. We have been constantly trying him to fit him in somewhere in the line up with out any luck. He was doing OK for awhile when Miller was feeding him the puck but he just isn't what we need. Miller can't be babysitting him when he can do so much more on his own. We need Pearson's size and Garland's creativity so Bes would be the one to go if a deal can be made. The team actually looks better already with him out of the line up TBH.

[Rumour] Tyler Motte drawing interest

Yes Culture is where we should be rebuilding and Motte is part of the culture we want to keep. -

And..........back to the passive, less intense hockey against NJ. Miller was the only one that appeared p!ssed at what was going on but no one did anything about it. Things really need to change on this team. -

This is exactly it! Why did no one get into a fight with Nazzy or Hank? They didn't play intense or physical enough for someone to confront them. Rarely does Bo do it either. In fact, many players are like that on the team, they don't get in the dirty areas so why would anyone engage them? Its a culture of "don't engage and no one will react"! No wonder Marchand thought he could get away with what he did to Daniel he knew with out a doubt, no one would engage him, and they didn't. I guess saying the team lacks "toughness" is the wrong description, it should be more like they lack "Intensity and physicality". The willingness to do what ever it takes to win a game , even if it meant putting themselves in harms way. -

That was my thought as well. Its like we didn't want any aggression in the game at all. Maybe Bo is a product of that as I remember he did used to throw hits and did have a fight at one time. I think JB knew the importance as he brought in players such as Roussel, Ferlund and Myers but once they got here, it was like they were not permitted to play aggressive. Yeah Gadj was a weird situation, he barely had the chance to see if he could play in the NHL and all of sudden he was gone. After all that has happened, I am curious to see what this new regime see's as what the identity of the team is going to look like. I really hope they build a team made for the playoffs, big, strong, fast and the ability to play what ever game the opposition throws at them. We should never lose a game because we got outworked or out muscled to the puck, that should be Hockey 101, and every player should have that instilled in them. We have gotten so used to checking with our stick and not much body contact in the corners. -

Yes it will be interesting to see what this new management sees as what changes are needed. I am sure they see the same inconsistencies we see from the team as well. -

This team when they play to their potential is a very good team who competes with some really good teams. The problem is that they , like you said, do not come to play on some nights. Its like they need some kind of motivation to get them going. I don't know, making millions of dollars, I thought, would be enough motivation, No? You are also right, we have seen them play phenomenal periods and then go without any shots for what seems like eons. Like what happens in their minds do they think well I played hard enough for ten minutes I am done now? I don't get it. When I watch the PP I always think, why are you not hustling to try and gain the Zone? Even when it gets dumped back in the D zone some teams can actually get the puck before we do, how does that happen? Where is the urgency? The PK is not much better. -

Yeah I have the problem of comparing all of our players from the 90's team. The only complaint I had with that team was Murzyn , as he was so slow and should have played more aggressive similar to Myers. Those teams never took a night off and knew how to elevate their game when needed. With Moments like "The Save" , "Brown to Bure", "He will play on crutches" "Bure's mother of all elbows" , "Linden and McLean totally exhausted after game 7 pic " you knew they laid it all on the line when it mattered. From then on , I have seen this team play non-chalant, non-urgent hockey on many nights. Almost like they are taking the night off. Unacceptable, especially if they are playing a HOME game. I really think it is(energy level) generated from the Captain on out and I have not seen that in decades. Yeah Bo has had some good moments but I don't believe he is consistent enough, he will go through multiple games where he is not even noticed. Being a good face off guy does not make you a great Captain. Yes that Skate team had a lot going for it. Veteran presence from players such as Babych, speed and skill from Bure and Ronning, Heart and Soul from Linden and Odjick and D who could move the puck up the ice from Lumme and Brown. Then we had McLean as a goalie who made the right save at the right time and didn't choke when it really mattered. Talking about Jovo as Captain, I believe Willie Mitchell should have been one of Captains as well. Yeah , I am not too convinced we have a Captain on this current team but Miller is probably the closest we have at the moment, I agree. -

I see him exactly like Hank. He plays at one level and it hardly ever goes up or down. I know some see this as an attribute but I see it as a deficiency when you are tagged as a leader. I have seen some players who are not the leaders(Burrows, Kessler, Hansen, Garland, Jovo, Miller) who have elevated their games but the Captain does not follow through or initiate the team to Elevate their game. Everyone remembers "Beast Mode" and everyone remembers how Linden laid everything on the line in 94' but what do we remember about our last Captains(Nazzy,Hank,Bo)? Well we know they got beat up or seen their team mates get beat on and did nothing about it. That is not what I see as a Warrior. Its not what I would say are "beat an opponent at all costs" leaders either. -

Some fans just get emotionally connected to certain players, I get it. I have had favorites over the years and seeing Linden get traded was pretty tough as a Canuck fan. The only thing that remains consistent is all players will come and go at some point. The part I find difficult is when the team does the same thing over and over and expect it to be different even though its just the number on the back that changes. Then I see what others teams are doing and being successful and wondering why we aren't doing the same. .......and your right, if the price is right, a player will go anywhere. Who would want to move to Winnipeg? -

Obviously your opinion on who constitutes a good leader is different then mine, that's fine. I just see that this team and probably for longer then a decade, the Leadership/Captain has not been able to visually take the bull by the horns and lead this team out of "funks" or just plain "poor play" from everyone. In Bo's 8 years has he ever gone "Beast Mode" or ever laid a big hit to get the team going? Has Hank? Has Nazzy? Obviously that's not their game but that is the whole point. I agree, Bo had his time during the playoff bubble but what about before that or after? Consistency. I don't argue that Bo is a great hockey player, as was Nazzy and Hank but somehow you need to take responsibility of your teams poor play and do something about it. To me, that is your responsibility if someone is pinning a letter on your sweater. If you are interviewed and you just say "we need to be better" that just doesn't cut it. -

EdgarM replied to SilentSam's topic in Canucks Talk
This is typical, make up an excuse for the player and then tell us ONE THING he is good at. You can't tell me Bo is "CONSISTENT" or an "ALL IN ONE" player. He is not. When a player like Miller is showing obvious leadership attributes(on ice) while you just sit and do nothing, that is a problem. -

Watching Bo's interview last night reinforced this mentality and he really doesn't say what he feels but tells us what he thinks we want to hear and is so "Robotic". You listen to Miller interview and you can tell he is telling us how he really feels. BB is the same and TG was the same "Robotic" interviewer. With what I have seen and what others have said, our two Centers who probably are the closest to being true leaders are Miller and Petey. I will give Petey the benefit of the doubt because he is still young. I see Bo as the last part of the previous regime and should be thanked for his service and moved along. Same with Boeser. These two are probably are expendables and should be the ones shopped around as trade options. -

I remember Pronger and Scott Stevens being pretty intense as well. I don't think I would be passing players like them up for our Captain. I think we have others on the team we can cut before Miller. If we get an unbelievable offer then fine, but if we are looking at improving the team, he is much lower on the list of moves IMO. -

Imagine if Jovo Cop wore the "C" instead of Nazzy or Kessler did instead of Hank? Would this team look different if Miller wore the "C" instead of Bo? What's that saying about "Nice guys finishing last"?
