[Report]Canucks hope to re-sign Markstrom
WestCoastDave replied to peaches5's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Why not have Markstrom sign a 1 year deal plus an understanding (wink wink) he will be getting a longer term deal following it? With the likelihood of a flat or declining cap due to Covid19 and the Seattle expansion coming up, it seems to make the most sense. By waiting a year, there is a chance the situation and the cap could be better so he could ask for more in his next contract. Also, Markstrom should know that losing Demko to Seattle would weaken the Nucks goalie position so that would only makes it harder for the team. -
One of Benning's better trade when he bought low on Pearson with Gudbranson going to Pittsburgh. If you want to sell high on Tanner, this could be the time to do it. And if this year's draft is anything like the 2003 draft, getting a 1st and 2nd round pick back wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yep, I agree...Virtanen seems to have turned the corner this season. It might be a good idea to lock him up with a longer term team friendly deal.
-
I also like Leivo. I think his biggest problem is that he seems to be injury prone. When you check out his career, he misses a lot of games. If the Nucks could figure out how to keep him healthy over a long period of time, it will help Josh and the team.

Yep...Stecher still have good underlying numbers. He is also the only D who is in the mid 20s currently playing with the team right now (so that could be important for team continuity). Tanev also had good underlying numbers, but has gotten worse over the last 2 years. So if you have to choose between the two, I would go with the former.

With our cap troubles, moving Sutter make the most sense. The problem is who would want him.

NHL Draft to remain in June (Proposed)
WestCoastDave replied to aGENT's topic in General Hockey Discussion
One idea to solving the conditional pick problem is to have a means for both the Nucks and Devils to agree to a player to draft with the team getting that player being determined by whether the Nucks make the playoffs once the season resume and ended. So if the Vancouver makes the playoffs, New Jersey gets the player drafted while if the former missed the playoffs, they will get that player. Some ways this could be accomplished, the Nucks and the Devils could work on a joint draft list or if they don't want to share information, they could offer separate rankings list to a neutral party (like the league) who will make the pick for both clubs. It is not a perfect solution, but it is a way around the problem. -
Jake Virtanen's next contract (Discussion)
WestCoastDave replied to Toews's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It depends on if the Nucks resign Toffoli to a reasonable deal or not (no bad contract please) given how about clubs would want him. If he sign elsewhere, keeping Boeser and Virtanen is a nobrainer. -
Canucks can only sign two of Toffoli, Tanev or Markstrom
WestCoastDave replied to Me_'s topic in Canucks Talk
The order I would rank resigning them would be Toffoli > Markstrom > Tanev. Toffoli would be the hardest to resign because he has less loyalty to the Nucks and he is sought after by other teams. Given we are in a pandemic and with the Seattle expansion next year, it might be wise to offer Markstrom a 1 year deal with the understanding (wink wink) of a longer 3/4 year deal afterwards. As for Tanev, given his injury history and stage of his career and the young D's waiting in the wing, a 1 year deal seems appropriate. -
[Speculation] Canucks interested in Tyson Barrie
WestCoastDave replied to brian42's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If the Nucks want Barrie, they should wait until free agency this summer. He is from Victoria, B.C. so that will help improve our chances of landing him. -
[Speculation] Stecher might be on the market
WestCoastDave replied to HerrDrFunk's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'm not in favor of trading Stecher (25 yrs.) at this time because he is the only D currently on our roster who is in the mid 20's range. Edler, Tanev, Myers, and Benn are all 30 + while Hughes is 20 years old. Wasn't it not too long ago he was arguably our top D? So why would you want to trade him when his value is low? Besides, since he is having an off year, it would help the Nucks in resigning him to a team friendly contract. -
Discussion: Who stays and who goes?
WestCoastDave replied to Sedintwinpowersactivate's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
What about Goldy for Ho Sang? They were both drafted back to back in the same year and a change of scenery might help them. -
[Discussion] Winnipeg Jets window has closed
WestCoastDave replied to The_Rocket's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
If we are going to trade away a conditional first sometime in the next 2 years, I would rather have gotten Ehlers instead of Miller since the former is 3 years younger and we wouldn't have to include the rest of the stuff in the Van/TB trade. -
[Signing] Tyler Myers to Vancouver
WestCoastDave replied to Rush17's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I rather the Nucks sign three cheap undervalued defencemen on short term deals than signing Myers for 7x7 years. -
Well Murphy was -3 the year previous and a -13 a year previous to that so he seems more like an average D.The team was bad due to a large part to their terrible defence so if they want to improve it they would need to move some players out and bring in some new ones. I remember reading the two most likely defencemen to be move are Murphy and Forsling (the former do not have a NTC or a NMC). The reason given was to bring in better defencemen like Jokiharju and more ice time for Koekkoek. I see that they have already moved out Forsling and added Maatta and De Haan.

Maybe, if Chicago had offered Connor Murphy, 26 yr. old with 3 yrs at 3.8 million left, instead of Seabrook as a cap dump might have been more appealing for the Canucks. The Hawks wanted to trade him anyways so will get some cap relief and the Nucks will get a cost controlled RD for the next 3 years.
