Gotcha. Nonetheless I think Newhook does have elite puck skills and top 6 potential, if not top line potential if developed properly. Did his u18 performance not change your opinion on him?
-
Ya he and Krebs were for sure
-
Newhook and Virtanen only share two similarities in my opinion. canadian and fast newhook is a completely different player he’s always moving around on the pp, in the offensive zone. He has a much higher hockey IQ at the same age. I don’t see the similarities at all. Virtanen was kind of a one trick pony in JR skate wide and past guys and blast it over top the goalie or skate through a kid and blast it over the goalie. That’s why he got comparisons to Booth. No one is comparing Newhook to Virtanen or booth for good reason. Sorry mate just don’t agree with this comparisons. and Newhook defn has top 6 upside
-
I agree it is hard. But I was comparing development paths. Because neither really had a solid comparable imo. And both were dominant and exceptional skaters. I personally get the Jost, I just don’t love it. jost was on a very good team, he wasn’t even the top producer on it I’m pretty sure. Same thing when he went to North Dakota he got to play with some decent players, including Boeser. newhook had like double the points of the next highest scorer on his team, led the playoffs in scoring playing less games, led the league in scoring and scored almost 0.5pts/game more than anyone close to him. again I like jost think he was a solid prospect, a great college player but I think he needed one year more in North Dakota being the go to guy there. Newhook is just on another level imo and yes jost is a good skater but I thinkNewhook is a faster stronger skater. jost did dominate his u18 tournament though which I’m pretty sure locked in his top 10 selection. Maybe I’m biased because I know what he is rn and it clearly was affected by not staying in college longer.
-
True but if it’s even close to deciding I’d want him to do one more year in college it’s really no harm and think he’d be a better player after. But who knows maybe your eighth and he is completely ready after 1. I’m a cautious guy haha
-
Yea 2 years of college I think. Hes also the captain of his team, a natural goal scorer, an exceptional skater, overcome adversity of being a Canada camp cut earlier in the year to being a force at the u18s. i think he’ll have to learn to be careful skating up the middle with speed like he does regularly in jr cause college has some big mean kids that will teach him, but that will be good. he also has solid size for his height, he’s not a small guy. I like him a lot. And think he’d look great in a canucks sweater
-
I don’t think he’s that great of one. i think Newhook was quite a bit better than Jost draft year. like Newhook completely dominated the league. also his skating is on another level. Jost imo should have stayed in college for at least 1 more year. He’s a decent player but I think they rushed him a little and that has capped his potential in my eyes. i think Makar (I know dman and different league) is a better comparable to Newhook. 1 - both are fantastic skaters 2 - both dominated their jr leagues in their own way i expect Newhook to have a great college career most likely 2 years long and a killer world jr performance.
-
I’d order them like that as well. which is great really happy about who we are interested in I like these three player a lot. was banging the Krebs drum all year lol. Zegras I would be stoked to have and don’t think you can pass on him. But Newhook really has won me over as the season went along. I’d be very happy with Newhook at 10 even tho so many would say that’s a reach. Im surprised they aren’t interviewing Boldy he seems like a Benning / Brackett guy as well.
-
I’d do that trade just depending on what our protection list would look like I doubt Edmonton would do that tho
-
Ya he will be gone though - Which I’m kinda happy about
-
I think the quote was 3-4 These 3 for sure: Zegras Newhook krebs 4th if so, I am going to guess it was broberg if the rumours of Benning liking him are true
-
Say management had Krebs and Newhook ranked very closely but Newhook has a better development path in front Of him healthy and going to BC and will get to play with another high end prospect in Boldy. whereas Krebs has a serious injury, will miss a full summer training, summer camp, and has to go back to Kootney for another hard year. i believe in Krebs as a player and a person and think he will recover from this and become a great player. I just wish he was part of a different program next year and wasn’t unlucky with this injury. But he’s getting some big tests of adversity early In his career and maybe overcoming it and learning now will make him a stronger better leader and pro later on . hard to judge but it could be the difference between him and one guy teams have close in their draft rankings. I think CDC is on the Newhook and Seider train though 2 guys that get a lot of love on here.
-
Plus an expiring contract (Benning) and with pressure to improve upon last season.. im so nervous for this summer
-
Gotcha it’s just a scary trade to think about I’m so nervous for what happens this summer
-
8-10 is negligible this draft imo wouldn’t be worth it at all to take lucic I’d rather have their second rounder or an additional pick. Plus poolparty involvement it would have to be a really good trade for us to do it. And with Eriksson we can’t really afford $12M in anchors
-
Worst part about taking lucic is he takes a Seattle expansion protected spot agree tho and if poolparty is involved maybe theres something but otherwise no thank you
-
Because many teams missed on David. Nylander was highly touted, highly scouted, put up great numbers and had the last name alone to garner attention. Nylander was ranked 2-5 most of the year whereas Pastrnak wasn’t even on any of our radars. Hard to be too upset about that.
-
Thanks mate! Who do you think we will take at #10 if 1-9 fell that way?
-
Exactly - I’m really excited we have a shot at drafting the kid. Use to think we had no shot at him at all
-
Hahawas just typing this. zegras will get to centre farabee though so he’s lined up for a great development path and draft + 1 year.

I think I’ll take a stab at a mock draft right now. 1. NJ - Kakko i just think they’ll pull the trigger on this. He’s more NHL ready, he showed how strong he is and how skilled he is at the men’s WC he can slot in with Hall right away and he may even be a better C prospect than Hughes. As Hughes May get shifted to the W. I think their ceilings are similar and Kakko has done enough to be 1 on some teams lists. I have a feeling he will go first. 2. NYR - Hughes no brainer. It’s Hughes or Kakko whoever NJ doesn’t take. 3. CHI - Turcotte 4. Colorado - Cozens I think they should take Byram because Byram-Makar would be ridiculous. Or Caufield, as they can afford to take a big swing on him and god could he be a deadly compliment to their top 6. But rumours are they really like Cozens so I’ll slot him in here. 5. LA - Byram they run to the podium and get there man, the best dman in the draft. 6. DET - Podkolzin just really seems like a Detroit guy. But if they shock us all with a Seider/Broberg defence pick here I wouldn’t be surprised. Even Caufield wouldn’t surprise me. But I can see Podkolzin written on a Detroit sweater come draft day. 7. BUF - Caufield not afraid to take risks. Love American players. Choosing between Zegras/Caufield/Boldy they go with they highest ceiling for pure goal scoring and take the little guy with the magic release. 8. EDM - Broberg they need d help and future d pairing of Broberg-Bouchard sounds very intriguing. Both big big men with offensive abilities. Brobergs strengths and weaknesses Skating/Shot/IQ will ying/yang nice with Bouchard. 9 ANA - Dach Dach if he falls to 9 just seems like an Anaheim guy to me. Big, cerebral and highly skilled. Can imagine him a duck. Easy to see him going higher because he’s big, skilled and a C. But some scouts have him lower on their lists as a guy who may not translate to being a top line nhler. All it takes is a team to have 1 player above him on their draft board to pass him down to this spot so I believe it is very possible. 10 VAN - Zegras Selecting among: Zegras/Boldy/Krebs/Newhook/Seider/York/Harley With Zegras positional flexibility, high end skill set (skating ability, passing ability, IQ etc etc), numbers/production, personality (interviewed great at combine and for the radio) he seems to be our guy. Also I’d say he has the highest ceiling available with Krebs and Newhook close behind. Although if Chicago took him at 3 I wouldn’t be surprised either. - these are my guesses on where these kids will go, I say guesses because every team, every person has ranked them differently so thought it would be fun to try and guess now and reference back on draft day. Fun part is regardless we are getting a grade A prospect. But since every team in the top 15ish will be, we have to hope that ours rises to the top and is the guy people who picked before us kick themselves for not taking 2-3 years from now!!
-
Seriously!? Crazy just saw report / tweet. Sounds like bieksa luck another players skate went through his suck behind the skate. honestly kids get hurt and overcome them. Is he the kind of kid to not rebound from an injury? I don’t think so. I think he will be fine it’s just some adversity he will have to overcome. no team expected him to be nhl ready he will have a good rehab rehab team with him, he’ll still be able to workout on certain think since he’s in a Moon boot. Its a partial tear and he’s expected to make a full recovery but will miss camp. I don’t think this will be a major factor in the Canucks decision but being that it’s a home draft the optics of drafting someone in a moonboot might not be the best. if he falls though because of this a team is going to be very lucky.

Well he was underscouted majority of year by mainstream experts / media. as games in Germany are harder to cover of course. But: - Went from young offensively minded d prospect to playing in men’s league and showing as a defence first guy playing his role in the system - won rookie of the year - has physical tools - scouted more as year went on, 80 scouts at his final game - showed very well at Men’s WC, showed what he’s all about - had a strong combine, great personality, English is perfect and he left a strong impression with everyone he met. ive warmed up to the idea of him being the second best dman in the draft. Even though I’ve only seen highlights and his internationally covered play. My dmen ranking: byram seider york harley broberg soderstrom heinola
-
Not at all it’s just facts. he states this every time bob macs is an aggregate ranking from lists given my nhl scouts he interviews craigs his personal list based of games he scouted personally no shade thrown at all

1-2 years away for sure. He’s wasting away there
