Toews, I didn't say Horvat and Virtannen were similar, just the CDC hate factory treated them the same for the first few years. Completely different players, Ki problem. Bo is a leader, Jake isn't. Agree. Did a bunch of posters scream and spew hate towards Bo, saying we 'shud hav draft'd Nick!!' Yes. Go back to Bo's last year in Junior and Nick was already in the NHL, it sounds very similar to the Jake hate parade. Heck, Bo's first NHL season was treated about the same, and don't go looking at Bo's AHL stats, it will confirm that he will only ever amount to a 4th line center at best. Really want to freak out, look at his WJC stats, people claimed that he single handily lost the tourney for Canada, what a failure... Ring any bells for you, where have you heard that type of talk on the CDC in the past few years? Bo is a clearly smarter player, natural leader, while Jake was drafted more because of his size and physical abilities. Bo has been able to overcome his weaknesses and now is going to the Allstar game at 22. But now Jake and even OJ are failures because other players have had some earlier success in the NHL. Fire JB, trade them for a bag of pucks. They will never improve, learn or adapt. The 19 and 20 y/o kids are finished, no need to wait or look further. They said that about Bo, the twins, Naslund, Bert etc etc. See a pattern? EW

Nah, Say what you would about Labamba, he is cynical and hates small Defencemen named Subban, but he has earned my respect and he is not always on the naysayers side. Big Head is a little more trollish about anyone not named Horvat. Maybe he should go back a read all the 'We should've drafted Nishuskin' crap that went on endlessly here until mid point last season. see if he can find some similarities in how the CDC treats any prospect that is not scoring 50 goals a week while posting a shutout. EW

Great post, deserves my pluses than I can give. Completely agree and well said. EW

Wow, Krutov that came into Canucks camp as a 30 y/o guy like 40 lbs overweight? Okay... Full marks for the reference, but God I hope you are completely wrong, crazy or seriously kidding. Lol... If anything, he may have some Sandlack in his approach to the game. House was a big chill guy who did okay, unless you pissed him off... Then he took over the game. It only happened a few times, then he would disappear again. Always thought Quinn needed to Slap Sandlack hard in the face before every period and then tell him to take it out on the other team. EW

Demko has progressed in a very similar fashion to CS. They went to the same IMO program, drafted by the same club. They have very comparable NCAA and rookie AHL numbers made way easier by having them come from the same program. My oppinion is worth nothing and is like everyone else's. Part of my response was a counter to the prevailing negativity about the current prospect pool. You are right, I will pump the brakes, but Demko is our future in goal. EW
-
Well his user name gives you an indication how he feels. My take as they are different players, but will both have simialities in how they will impact the roster. EW

Green could have had Jake doing a ton of off ice and pre game drills. Jake needed better conditioning and it was one of the reasons he was sent down in the first place. Green could have put Jake thru a program that could have left him gassed before the game even started. Hopefully he has adjusted now and can work on his other weaknesses. Speculation, but I would have a top pick who needed better conditioning do extra training. Jake raved about Green, and having him as a coach. Maybe Jake is at a point were he needs a coach he can look up to, don't think WD was that guy. EW

Just for the record 5th, I don't take you seriously. Your doom and gloom projections are no different. What makes you think Jake will be so bad. Stats you say, but ignore his odd development path. At the same time you also dismiss Demko who has put up better numbers than Schieder at the same age for the same teams in a similar situation. Easy to compare Demko to Schnieder. So for you, stats only matter when it is negative. You have nothing to prove your point, but your opinion. I state my opinion as that, you claim to have knowledge of things that have not yet happened. The irony in your constant negativity is hilarious, it will only get more funny in time as young players come into the system and literally prove you wrong. Then we can bring up post after post, thread after thread. Look ok on the bright side for a while. If I'm right, the team rebounds and becomes decent to watch in two to three years, if your right, the team will suck forever. Block me I don't care. EW.

Guntrix. IMO it is way to early to say that Nylander and Ehlers are going to be cornerstone franchise players. Ehlers maybe. The Jets have a good bunch of young talent, hard to say who is the generator of offense, Ehlers or his linemates. I do believe that Nylander is overrated and will look good riding the coat tails of Mathews and Marner. Of the 3, he is definitely a 3rd wheel. The Buffalo draft was a huge success Benning's first draft was an absolute success, the club walked away with legit NHL takent with 5 players from that draft. Yea 2 were traded, but so far, here is the return. Jake, at minimum becomes a Raffi Torres type player that scores an average of 15 goals a season. Not earth shattering, unless he hits you. There is no reason not to believe this to be his floor. Time with Green is what he needs to get there or surpass this. How does one pass on a 210 lbs 45 goal scorer who can skate faster than any other player in his draft year. Especially a local kid. I hope you are dead wrong on Jake. I see him as a 20/20 guy as a LW that generates space for his linemates and scares the bejesus out of opponents. He has not followed the usual path of development, so standard metrics don't really work. McCann turned into Guds. Win. Demko is is going to be better than Schnieder. That is my opinion. Win Trymakin might be the best pick from this draft if he can become the next Chara. Win. Forsling. Traded for a bag of pucks.... Oops. But we do have a Sutter, so not a total loss. Win turned into a give away. One or or two of the late picks also look promissing. Olsen may pan out, but way to early to tell. All in all, JB's first draft was the best draft this organization had in over ten years. EW

Seriously, just because someone is born somewhere doesn't mean they'll play there. If so why did Colorado draft Jost? Why didn't Louongo play in Montreal, Sakic never played here. Read reports, interviews and such. There has been zero indications or talk, expect by members of the CDC, that Boeser wants to walk away from the team that drafted him. Two more years need pass before Boeser can become a FA. That's after this season.
-
Keep Boeser and use the millions saved to either sign an FA or trade a d man. That's my preferred course. EW

His off season, not the Canucks...;). That's what I meant...

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Thatvis the CDC way. -
By all preseason indications from the club and Boeser, a signing this off season was the plan. It it will really come down to what Boeser will want to prove in college after this year. His injury could change his outlook, but there is still lots of season left for him to achieve some goals. He he is a much better player than expected and it was unfortunate that he has missed the WJC. I want the club to push to sign him now. Having his shot on Hanks wing would be something to see. Even just for a few games. EW

IQ is very important, but don't forget that Hodgson and Schoeder were drafted largely based on their precieved high IQ. Lots of reasons to contrast and compare prospects, but in fairness, the clock is still ticking. Jake could be still in Junior as an overager this year. It's not like he is done and is a lost cause. Really hard to gauge his progress or regress based on his jump to pro early. Not the best move from the organization and management. I have speculated on what reason they had, but one bad season in the NHL and rough start to the AHL is not the end all be all of a person or player. I will join you in a year on the bust train, but not before. EW
-
Sorry, Didnt mean to but you on the 'bust train'. I started to reply, then came back after a while and finished, then was thinking of another posters comments. Glad to agree with you. EW
-
Jake hasn't panned out based on a very rushed and irregular. He is now where he needs to be. The kid has the tools, but Green needs to bring it out of him. The big difference between Utica and Vancouver is the need to win vs development. Jake basically lost a year of normal development. Green might have rebuild him a bit and he has the time. one year from today, if Jake doesn't show some legit ability to put it together I will join you on the bust train. EW
-
Gotta disagree Deniro. The whole organization is in a state of flux. The comets are depleted and won't be restocked until next season. Jake wasn't reach, and yes Ehlers was my player, but Jake was second. If things don't improve next season then I will change my stance. OJ wasn't a reach either. D men usual take longer and do you draft a Tkachuk with Boeser in the wings when a guy like OJ is there. Its easy to look over the fence and say the grass is greener, but it doesn't mean it's true. OJ is JB's best pick IMO and I cannot wait for him to arrive. Boeser will be better than Tkachuk and Jake will get it together IMO. With the recent and very good transition to a new young defence core, there is little reason to doubt JB can do the same with the forwards. Especially now we can flip a defender for a forward. Time is the only thing we are all waiting on. You remember the days before Naslund, Bert and Jovo brought fans back into the seats after the Keenan debacle. To me this feels similar. We are thru the worst of it, but cannot yet see what the new team will be. Peace EW
-
Jake and the comets are in a bad situation this year. Theth farm team lost its best and really all of its eligible talent to the parent club. The way I see it, JB is rebuilding the Canucks roster and trying to build a team from scratch in Utica. This year Utica is taking the worst of it. Over the long term, it will improve. Next season Utica should be getting a good bump of talent that will be coming out of the previous draft years. If Jake is a complementry player that needs a playmaker or someone to find chemistry with, how is he going to have that in Utica this season? Next year is the year for Jake to show that he has what it takes to play. If all Green is doing is getting him pro ready with fitness, technical work and Jake doesn't score another goal this year, fine, as long as he is ready to play next year. Some good young skill guys are all going to be ready for their rookie pro seasons. If only Ollie could also make the jump. Put Jake with a solid playmaker and a two way guy and watch his game arrive. It wasn't long ago he, Bo and Baer looked electric in the preseason, then WD split them up and Jake played on the fourth line. Honestly, give the kid some time. What does any poster gain by proclaiming him to be a failed pick now. If they are right, they will still be right in a year. The point has been made and the rest of us are sick of hearing it. EW

POST OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!! i have followed this board since Bob Essensa was a poster and this may have been the best thing I have ever read. Mad props to War Hippy. Love the name btw. You have it right again and I wish I could give you 1000 pluses. This should be copied and posted as a must read for all the CDC. EW
-
Exactly. We don't improve by always winning, we learn and become better thru adversity and overcoming it. These are young players that are developing. Let them fall, fail and learn to get back up and become stronger.
-
If conditioning is Jakes biggest problem, then it is fixable. A lack of stamina/fitness can make a player look far worse than they really are. Some guys figure this out right away, ala Horvat. For the most part, and in most cases, it takes a few years to bring a Jr level players fitness and stamina up to a borderline NHL fitness level. This is were the sons of NHLers have a real advantage. They have insider access to all the tricks and techniques to pro training. They also have the money to pay for it long before they are drafted. EW
-
For the most part this is a classic reaction by a sub group of the CDC going back to 'we should have drafted Kopitarzz!' Bourdun was a stud, RIP, and those posters just went on to say the same thing over and over. In fairness, the Canucks draft record was abissamal for a period of time. Patrick White didn't sting that much because GMMG was able to get Erhoff in a sweetheart deal. But no one here would be wrong to say, We could have had PK etc from that draft. One has to think that the OJ should have been Tkachuk is really just an echo of past angst. JB has done a great job drafting and so far there is no reason to believe that OJ cannot reach his floor of becoming a top 4 defender. He could easily be our top defender, think Edler with a much higher IQ or Tanev with more offense, in a few years. To me, that would be a legit number one d man. It's low hanging fruit to compare picks early on. Context makes it nearly impossible to say pick 'x' is better than pick 'y' if only JB had drafted pick 'x' all would be better. Pick 'x' could be back in Jr if we had drafted him, just like pick 'y'. This goes away when the prospect makes the NHL and proves their ability. Horvat is a great example. 'Should have drafted Nishukinzz' went on for a year or so, how did that turn out? Even Boeser has some 'Should have drafted Konecy' (sp?) fans out there. The good news is that this only seems to be with 1st rounders. No one is out there saying bo about Demko or Trymakin right now. EW
-
IQ and drive will make up for a whole host of shortcomings. Juolevi is also a sublime skater as per pre draft reports. The thing is, there is no real weakness to his game, but what he excels at is perhaps the hardest things for young d men to aquire, IQ. Juolevi's floor was becoming a top 4 defender in the NHL, while many talking heads compared his game to Vlasic. They believe he could reach that level of play, which would be fine for a 5th OA. EW

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Wouldn't mind Foote at all out of this draft of we are out of the top 6. He would be hell of good player.
