  1. Why would lose Edler, Guds or Tanev in the expansion draft? We can protect all three and leave Larsen, Pedan and Beiga exposed.
  2. Now that the off season post draft excitement has worn off, all of us that hoped, wished and dreamed that our latest draft pick would make the roster, well we were a tad over enthusiastic... That okay, we're fans. I still ill love the pick, but he needs time to grow, another year or more Juinor and then one season of AHL. This is the difference between the top 4 picks vs the rest in the last draft. Mathews,Laine, Dubois and JP all have the potential or real ability to step into the NHL this season. Juolevi needs time to grow. The long term impact of each player, anyone's guess, but what we missed in this draft was an immediate impact on the roster. That being said, long game is were JB needs to focus. Looking at how mobile our defence is this year, we can now take time to develop our d prospects. This is awesome and cannot be understated. Not only does Ollie need time, but the team has no need to rush him.
  3. Gaunce is a keeper. He is the future and teams 'retooling on the fly' don't let young excellent prospects/players go and keep older ones. Lots of things can happen prior to the expansion draft. No need to worry yet.
  4. Sure, But rushing to judgement on a 19 year old player is for not being able step in and dominate is a problem. The NHL has lots of examples of players with size that take time to develop/adjust from Juinor to the NHL. Because these players play into contact. There is a big adjustment to battling CHL defenders to NHL defenders. This is a fundamental difference between the smaller shifty skilled players and the guys that play the physical game. One avoids contact, one initiates contact. The hardness Jake needs to develop to allow him to play his game takes time to mature. He does have the tools to be an offensive force, but it will take time. He he may end up as a Torres like player, that is his floor. Not what you want with a 6th OA pick, but he also has the potential to be more, a true power forward. For me that is a 30g scoring guy that punishes opposing d and creates space. Jake is not a PF yet, but he could be in a few years. One of the hardest players to find in the NHL. Fingers crossed.
  5. They both likely need time to develop. Jake has a few seasons to go before he gets there. This is a common issue with power forward players. Those that dislike Jake forget this. Too soon to pass him up.
  6. Olli's play made Strecher look good. It allowed him to take chances and go on rushes. He stated this in a post game interview. Juolevi has a subtle game, like Tanev, that is not flashy and remarkably efficient. He hopefully can be a much better offence contributer at the NHL, but he does look to be Tanev version 2.0 on defence. His confidence in his own abilities really comes across in interviews. It isn't brash or cocky, I can see why his interviews at the combine were off the charts. A pairing of Tanev and Juolevi would be great to see at camp. It might allow us to assess Juolevi's offence as he could rely on Tanev cover him. It would be a pairing that would be really frustrating to Forecheck against.
  7. Agree on both Juolevi and Virtannen. Jake needs Green to realize his potential. He needs to play with hunger and intesity all the time.
  8. I am an eternal optimist, the only way to be a Canucks fan without the bitter irony... Juolevi will likely take 2 years minimum, but I don't count out his drive and confidence. He has swagger and has he potential to push for a spot sooner. Not this year though... Added to that, he isn't trying to break onto the 76' habs. There are players he could bump off the depth chart.
  9. It is a long shot for Juolevi this year. There is no need to rush him, but I do think his IQ will shorten any transition period. He won't be playing top minutes off the hop. If if he does make noise at camp, he will have trained like a mainiac all summer. That alone would be great for the club.
  10. Its all about size and weight for Juolevi. He has the skating, skill and IQ to make it out of the draft in the NHL. He has to be close to 200 lbs at training camp to be considered. This is is a nice problem to have. He is not a Juinor player that dominates because he overpowers everyone, he out thinks them. Lookkng at his stats and heard at the draft that he managed to add 9lbs of lean muscle mass in the second half of Juinor last year. He was reported to be 189lbs at the draft. He has the height, he just needs to add 10 to 12 pounds of legit muscle mass. Going back to Juinor is not a bad outcome. Win win all around.
  11. Boeser is a solid guy with great hands, Virtannen is the physical force who can skate like the wind. Sure they are different, but with these two prospects, the need for Tkachuk just isn't there when compared to the need of a top defence man.
  12. This^^^^ Its not Juolevi vs Tkachuk. It's Virtannen and Boeser vs Tkachuk. We have two players who will serve similar roles on our club. We had no player anywhere near Juolevi in the organization. Not since Edler was a prospect. EW
  13. There's this guy named Baer... We may already have a set up guy with slick hands. A line of Bo, Baer and Virt on paper has all the attributes to be a westcoast express 2.0. Fingers crossed.
  14. Excellent reply. Very detailed and knowledgeable. I may be more optimistic about Gaunce but cannot dispute your take. You will likely be more accurate in your assessment. Cheers. EW
  15. How Gaunce does will really depend on chemistry and who he plays with. In many ways he reminds me of guys like Burrows and Morrison. Can play in any role, but really work well with skilled players. Neither expectional talents, but smart players that meshed well with much higher skilled players. Analogy, Gaunce is the straight guy in a comedy show. Not funny on his own, but allows the the real comedians humour to come out. Gaunce is the reliable two way pressence that offers a skilled winger or two the latitude to create offense. He doesn't suppress them and gets to be the unsung, hard to measure key piece in a line. Unlike Horvat, whom I can see driving offence on a line, Gaunce would be more of an add on, but still a contributer. Pair him with players like Baer, Rodin, Boeser or Virtannen who all would be better suited to offensive roles, it could be really promising. EW
  16. Gaunce has the ability to play an NHL style game. He is/has been seasoned and shown promise. I hope he gets a shot this year.
  17. Fully in favour of Gaunce making the team this year. He needs a good look to determine if he is worth protecting in the Expansion Draft. I think he could really be a coaches player and a WD favourite by the end of this season. If he can be effective in the dot, I see no reason not to play him in the bottom six as a center. If Gaunce can emerge as a legit NHL center, Sutter could play as right wing on the 1st or 2nd line. This might offer better top six depth. A Horvat, Baer Sutter line would be a hell of second line. My two bits. EW
  18. The 88 train. Getting hit by a train does invoke a certain sentiment. Tram works. It is very English, train also fits.
  19. Just want to have a guy with the nick name 'Shats' on the team. Capt Kirk has already been taken.
  20. Hansen is our most valuable trade asset this year... That won't take away essential depth from the org. We cannot fully replace what he brings immediately, but we do have players that can take his minutes. Unlike losing Tanev, who would have the most value, but create the largest hole on the roster. *****Unless there is some hockey trade to be made for Shattenkirk (sign and trade)? Hansen, Tanev and a second for Shattenkirk?Dreaming, but we would get offence from our defence with Shats;) in the line up.***** I think Hansen is gone this year. We have young guys pushing for spots. We would get great return for him, hopefully with packaged either Sbisa or Edler for a great return.
  21. He's young. Training like a pro takes time. Size when you are mobile as Jake is a plus, provided his stamina is there.
  22. Agree. As much as everyone loved McCann, I had him below Gaunce in the depth chart. While McCann shows promise, his game is way less polished when compared to Gaunce. This is not an attack on McCann.
  23. Entirely possible. Gaunce is out most underrated prospect. Does everything he is asked, high IQ bigger guy, decent two way player with good skating now and a fairly good shoot. Can play c/LW. Deserved a better oportuntiy last year but the AHL/CHL thing forced managements hands with Jake and Jared.
