Jim Benning: June 27th, 2019 (Recapture penality/free agency)
Phat Fingers replied to Rush17's topic in Canucks Talk
All this means this year is bye bye Spooner. I can live with it for now. Next season and the one after, if the team has to lose one of its key young players as a result. -
Think perhaps his defensive issues have to do with learning a brand new system and trying to so with an injured knee. BTW, I disagree with the term major injury. It was a meniscus tear. Not a traumatic knee injury, a lingering thing that he could play thru. The Long recovery time was likely to give him a complete rest and allow him to be ready for this season. OJ was having a lot of trouble turning to one side while without the puck allowing defenders past him. He was shut down and had surgery soon after. I think he will be fine and show us why JB picked him. Looking forward to seeing IJ and Hughes QB the PP.

If true, &^@# Florida -
Fair questions. I believe that JB wants to add 2 FA d men. One higher end guy, either Myers or Gardiner. I was listening to a radio clip out east with Ray Feraro saying that he would take Gardiner over Myers. I don't see it personally but I know alot less than Ray. I also see a strong possibility that a Jordie Benn player gets signed to shore up our depth. As for OJ and Woo. I, like others think that OJ will be given every shot to make the club in the coming few years. His skill is there, he now has NHL size and skating. Health is my only real concern and I could see him stepped into the lineup. The club really believes in both Hughes and OJ. They just let Hutton go to FA so that itself is telling. As for Woo. Give him a 9 game stint. It shows the player why he must commit himself to hockey. It will only make Woo a better player. If Woo exceeds expectations, then talk about whether he stays or goes back down. We can always Driasitl him at 40 games if need be. Added tidbit of speculation. I could see JB going wild at FA d men this year and trying to both add Myers and Gardiner or getting one and trading Tanev. Unloading Tanev for Zaitsev and a pick plus Connor Brown would be decent. (SUB IN THE PICK AND OR OTHER ASSET COMING BACK...) TO would bring in a guy that would be a Babcock player. Less travel would likely improve Tanevs durability. A Tanev Muzzin Pairing would be good shut down unit. Zaitzev is no Tanev, but Myers could take the harder minutes that Tanev took. For those guys knocking Zaitzev, you may be right, but I see him as a bounceback candidate on another club. He is a ruskie which is a signal to our Russian prospects and he has a cap friendly deal for 5 more years. Tanev is in TO's budget and helps them in a key weak spot. Cost certainty is going to be attractive to our GM very soon.

Vancouver shot for Subban and backed off due to the cap hit. They then addressed our top 6 which is also a big hole. JT Miller is a nuck, FA is just around the corner. Myers, Gardiner and Stralhman are available and acquiring 1 or 2 FA d men is likely the team priority as they dont cost assets. I dont think JB is giving up anymore draft picks.

Keppen, Costmar and Malone will be pushing for spots on that list in 1 year.

Let Woo have a 9 game stint and go back to a WJC and memorial cup run.

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
Phat Fingers replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Whaaa? I like money, do you like money, why yes I do. That's how it works. FA's will still sign here. Eriksson is a train wreck and hasn't even come close to meeting expectations. If there is no trade and He clears waivers, then I think he retires. That is Eriksson's problem, the Canucks have given him 3 years to put it together and then LE starts a media issue. -
Reason! Logic! Good luck, but I gave you a plus and kinda agree

Hoglander, I will believe it when Pigs Fly!

Valium... 420 in the morning with a good cuppa. Best way to start a set if days off after my last night shift. I call.it the magic 8 ball, all organic and very relaxing.

Zaitzev is available. TO really wants the Marner saga to be over. Saunter for Zaitsev. As an example. TO needs cheap players that can take NHL minutes. They need Cap space. We got kicked in the balls yesterday by Luongo. A trade back to Vancouver with him being placed on the LTIR and never having to suit up was easy to facilitate. He still retires but doesn't screw over the club that in large part helped him achieve his hall of fame numbers. Don't think we can afford the top shelf FA signing with that extra cap hit. This year, sure but the last year is going to be hard and if this forces Vancouver to loss one of its core pieces.... Plus Zaitzev is on a long deal and is a RHD with some offence. Keep Tanev and Schenn. A right side of Tanev, Zaitzev, Stecher and Schenn is still better than Tanev, Guddy, Stecher and Pouliot. Then we get a Russian which should help Podz and get Trymakin back. Next season a Trymakin Zaitzev pairing as a third paring option isn't all that bad. Hopefully this team has learned something about the culture shock that Russian players can feel moving to NA, especially Vancouver.

Wow, This is going to help Podz adjust to NA. As things go forward, we are going to get very excited about his impact. This guy might have been the best defensive player in the entire draft vs all players. Thinking about what Ep40 and or Bo is going to do with all the turnovers Podz creates... This team is going to be a fast transition (hughes and OJ) and pure counterattack machine. Our PP could become the best in club history and our PK. Podz and Bo, think Kesler and Burrows in their prime, but better. Add in a Miller, Rousell, Pearson or Virtannen and that line is going to suck playing against. Podz and Ep40. Brock too. Being a defender trying to move the puck out against Podz and Ep40 is going make defenders dread the 'Highlight of the night. Fill in the blank " coughed up the puck attempting to break out vs Podz, Podz flipped the puck to Ep40, who completely undressed the other defender feeding the puck to Boeser who added yet another tally! Watch the goalie break his third stick of the night!" Back breakers, the type of players that take over series and the type of goals that kill teams souls.

Podz is the type of pick that builds teams into champions. He is a faster, more skilled winger version of Bo with an edge. I see both Podz and Hoglander (please start a restaurant chain) as top 6 wingers. Prior to the draft Vancouver had 1.5 top six wingers (Baer ? and Boeser). Post draft we have 2.5 and 2 more on track in 1-2 years. Between Virtannen and Pearson we could get 1 more second line player. IMO we were lucky to get Podz. He doesn't have to be a line driver, we have those now. We need committed tenacious wingers with size, speed and some snarl. Guys that go to the net, go into the corners and chip 20g minimun while Ep40, Bo and Brock get better. Podz will do that better than anyone else in the draft not named Kakko.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
We traded our 3rd to address a big hole in our top six. I am fine with that. Late rounders are simply lotto tickets that are highly unlikely to make any impact on our team. Costmar and Malone are very interesting picks and I have no problem with them. If one of our late rounders makes a 100 games in the NHL, win. Keppen was too good to pass.. BPA. Hoglander was the target with our second. The team was very high on him and again BPA. I don't think anyone expected Podz to be there at 10 and again, simply too good to pass on, BPA. You have to take what the draft gives you. Podz and Keppen were both lucky picks. The two most likely players on the teams radar were Sieder and Broberg. From the reaction when Detroit picked, Sieder was likely expected to be there at 10. Podz vs either Seider or Broberg.... Podz hands down. Hughes wasn't supposed to fall for us, Woo was like a bonus first rounder. The Pettersson draft, Lind was there and Clague was there. I would have been happy to land Clague. Big mean mobile RHD. Both still need to mature and there is no telling who will be better. I do think that defence needs to be a priority at the draft table. I don't think that the nucks expected to pick all forwards. P -
I have a general question here. I believe JT Miller to be a solid second line forward. Last season he produced 2nd line numbers on the 3rd line in Tamp, prior to that he was a 2nd liner in NY. Moreover I see how many people clamoured for MT, who have declared that we need a big solid LW for our top 6. Tada!!! Now if you see JT as a 3rd liner, never gonna be a top six player for us, then I can see why you would be upset by this deal.... but I cant understand why anyone thinks JT is nothing but a 3rd liner.
-
Smashing, Your backing yourself into a corner. JT is a good player and goes a long way to plugging a hole in our top six. The 2 biggest holes on the team were needing 2 top six wingers (Baer is one hopefully) and now Miller is the other. This gives Ep40 and Bo legit players to work with. No more fill ins!!! Remaking the defence is the second giant hole. A top.pairing RHD is the other huge need. You can argue that PK would have been a better get, but 9m per season, 38pts on a good team last year... that's a big pill to swallow. Reports had it down to us and NJ, NJ swallows, Vancouver doesn't. The first move (Miller) predicates another move, RHD. There is time and FA is just around the corner. If JB can land his top 4 RHD, then we will be in the mix. If he still has a giant hole there come training camp... then he and we have problems.

[Report] Ben Hutton to become UFA
Phat Fingers replied to BertaNuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not so sure. Hutton is a decent 5th guy and mediocre top 4 player... 4.5 to pay a bottom pairing guy. Sbisa 2.0 Would rather take that 4.5 and get Benn or Dillon etc. With Hughes and Edler plus OJ, Biega, Saunter, Brisbiois etc why pay Hutton 4.5 for any reason. Heck help Trymakin buyout his deal and give him the 4.5 and we would be better off in many ways. -
Different deals, Marleau is a pure cap dump. He won't be counted on for anything. TO has to sign Marner before july 1st to prevent offer sheets. Everyone knows how much an offer sheet could mess them up this year. To sign Marner, they had to pay someone to take Marleau. Tampa needs to lose salary, but they didnt need to pay anyone to take JT. Subban has a 9m cap hit. Rumour had it that Vancouver balked at taking on the full 9m. Guess JB did have a limit and did step back.

If the pick is a top ten then JB has failed. It is a risk, but so is drafting a guy like EP40. JT is a 4 time 82 game guy, 3x 20g scorer already at 26. This isn't a high risk player, but a blue chip guy who is a 200ft player. If JT can come close to 82 games in the next 4 years and be a solid 20g guy, JB wins the deal as long as the pick isnt a top 10.
