[Proposal] Zaitsev --> VAN
Phat Fingers replied to Desert-Canuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
'KHAN!!!!!!!' -
The nucks are in a position to strong arm Eriksson and lay it out for him. We have a deal in place and want you to waive your NTC. This is it for a deal and if you refuse, we will send you to the AHL. Play for team x, y or z or go the the AHL. We wont have you back on our roster for next year. His speaking out is grounds enough for a deal. His failure to live up to expectations is his issue IMO. Wenneberg at least is young enough to turn things around. This team owes LE nothing more than money at this point.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Dach wont be there, Caufield is too high on the risk vs reward scale for me, Krebs for me, Boldy second for forwards. Broberg, the German kid or Soderstrom of JB goes defence. Broberg has the package. He is the JV of defenceman. Wide open draft. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Agreed. Whatever happens on draft day, JB needs to walk away with a can't miss bonified asset. No mulligans. High risk guys like Caufield can be picked up by teams like the Av's as they are really just laughing all the way to the bank this draft. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
JH is far more than an average skater. He has next to Kane level agility. Caufield is a good pick for a team that can afford a mulligan if he doesn't make it. Can JB and the nucks afford a mulligan. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Above average is fine when your built like Bo Horvat. Cauflied is 160lbs and 5'7. He needs to be an excellent skater IMO. -
The 'magical unicorn' reference is to having a top pairing RHD... we haven't had that since Erhoff left. Watch "White Castle' and you will get the reference... Niel Patrick Harris. TO could offer Kadri, but has no cap space. So how could they possibly afford Trouba's next deal. The Peg isnt going to take salary back. If we get out bid, so what. 'You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.' I doubt there will be alot of teams trading for Trouba with EK becoming an FA. Unless JB has some really good indicators that EK would really like to come to Vancity, which would require Edler being here, most likely. JB IMO cannot pass up anything to fix that glaring hole. EK, Trouba, Myers etc... none may be everything we want in a RHD man, but we need to come away with one or another not named this Offseason IMO. I would be happy with any of the 3, just looking at how Trouba could be acquired.

Sam Bennett by trade or offer sheet
Phat Fingers replied to JohnnyCanucks12's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This 'thought experiment' is a pointless effort. Bennett is coming here. We have too many middle six forwards as it is, we aren't going to add a 18 y/o who can't do a chin up... sarcasm. -
Exactly. We haven't lost a college prospect since Burke. I think Madden would like to play with Demko, Hughes, Stecher Boeser and Gaudette. We have no issue signing college players. Just ask Tanev, Hutton, Teves and Brogan.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Agreed. Gaudette has exceeded his draft position. Great pick by JB. He is a top 30 pick in any redraft. -
Trouba had been trouble for Chevy since he was drafted. He has shown little interest in the Peg. IMO Chevy needs to still keep a draft stockpile to maintain his club long term. The Peg isn't an exciting city, lots of crime and it is a very small market. Hard to attract the top FA's and retain top young players in a place like that. Getting a high pick in a wide open draft could be really appealing to Chevy. Add in Tanev plus another asset, second tier prospect, middle six forward or a lower pick. He resigns Myers and they lower their cap, Tanev waives to play with his brother and play on the second pairing, Chevy gets a blue chip prospect and Myers would be a cheaper option to keep vs Trouba. Trouba would have to be willing to sign for the deal to go thru. Van gets its Magic Unicorn a revitalized defence. Sign Edler to a short deal to avoid losing a defender to Seattle, promise to sign him to a better deal after the expansion draft next year and prior to him turning 35. This has some merit... that's why I keep kicking it around.
-
There are options and opportunities to be had. Cap trouble is hitting the peg this year. They didn't have the playoffs they wanted and need to decide on which player to let go of. I have Trouba as a high probability due to his past contract squabbles. That could be water under the bridge, but he represents the magic rainbow unicorn to Canucks fans. A true top pairing RHD, young and would fit really well into our group age wise. Honestly I can look at him, EK and even Myers and find a reason to get one of them to Vancouver. We aren't likely to get any, but that is the key position than needs to be filled IMO, far more of a hole than LW. We likely take our pick at 10, sign a middling FA or two and send out our fringe extras via waiver wire. That's not going to raise this team from the bottom of the league. IMO a bold move is well timed this off season.

Good POV, This does fit with JB's MO. TO is in a bind. That Marleau deal is coming back to bite them, just like many of us on this board predicted. Tampa is also in a bind and probably still in a state of shock. They will be having to take q good hard look at their team that got bounced in the 1st round. Having the cap space to eat a few contracts to aquire assets is something you could sell Aqua if the promise of the playoffs and that revenue could offset the cost.
-
If we acquired EK, keeping Edler would be obvious, but why would we need to keep Tanev beyond his contract. EK would be very risky injury wise and could hamper the clubs cap flexibility moving forward with guys like Hughes and EP40 coming off their ELC's We could just have the bandaid brigade as our defence. Hopefully Hughes can stay healthy, OJ is following right in Salo's foot steps. One good thing is KB is adding to the depth on defence... having a bunch of young guys on the farm could at least keep filling in spots ad our NHL guys break down.

[Signing] - Brock Nelson - 6 years
Phat Fingers replied to drofssalg's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Damm, I wanted to have Brock play on a line here with Brock. Brock on. -
I think that we are cycling out of the top 10 drafting pool. With the likes of Chi, LA, Ott, Det and the NYR moving down, we are going to be pushed into the 10-20 pool, which makes it far less enticing to not spend to the cap. So, do we have the horses to build a new core around? I firmly believe that we do. EP40 is the main piece. He, Hughes and Brock will be JB's legacy in drafting much like Quinn's Linden, Ohlund and Bure picks or Burke's Sedins, Kesler and Edler. JB has brought in great talent in key areas. Demko, Hughes, EP40, Stecher, Gaudette, Boeser and JV are all roster players as of now. Add in OJ, Woo, Madden and Dipeitro as can't miss players, this teams future is well in hand. Add to that Horvat and the current group of vets, we only have to add at 1 or 2 positions, cut the dead weight transition players and voila, our new core is done. Getting those 2 players isn't going to be cheap or easy. We would have to surrender assets to move up in the draft to get a player that fills one need with certainty. Trading for a roster player that fits our group moving forward will be expensive and will either take away from our draft or our roster. FA's are the most expensive option, but are high risk... see Eriksson. I think JB is going to be very active this off season. For the following reasons. 1. The draft window is closing. JB has done very well with the worst lotto luck ever. This group is our group. We are either moving forward with Ep40, Bo, Brock, Hughes and co to success or failure. 2. If the premise of my above viewpoint is correct, the focus will be on getting to the playoffs rather than draft position by management. In other words, management has no choice but to make some costly moves now to directly improve our on ice product, rather than putting an emphasis on futures. 3. They will go hard after key FA's as the team is cap loaded atm. 4. I expect to see a number of trades this off season, mostly minor. I do see potential for a big trade at the draft. The 10th pick is not going help this team until 2023-24. Most, if not all top roster spots would be taken by then. So why not either move up, getting w player with a better timeline or trade for a roster player in a key position. If we keep the pick, which is most likely, then great, long term success is predicated on drafting success, but immediately following the draft I expect management to focus on short term success for the next few years.

OJ's timeline will in large part be determined more by the roster vs himself provided he is 100% physically ready at camp. It would be more about who he gets to play with vs his own strengths. Let's just say that Hughes is paired with Tanev. Edler and Stecher are a good match, that leaves Schenn is the 3rd pairing RHD guy. Hutton is not going to be our 4th d man with Edler and Hughes in the lineup. That leaves a Hutton Schenn pairing.... uh, no. We would be screaming into our devices and wishing Pouliot was back. Mentally, neither Hutton or Schenn have the ability to lead a pairing. But an OJ Schenn pairing would be an enticing 3rd pairing IMO. For me, it's a Chemistry thing. Schenn played well with Hughes, I think he would do the same with OJ. Hughes is a far more dynamic player, but OJ is second most skilled d man on the roster. Especially when it comes to an improved transition game. Trymakin is a wild card and Edler may not be resigned, Tanev could be moved, other FA's could.be added. Alot could happen, but I could see OJ platooning with another D man for the first half of the year and either an demotion to the AHL or the other d man is moved.

This response would been better had you not said that Hughes is built like a little girl. Gotta say, are a fan, or a hater. Alf is definitely on the scotch, although I prefer 4:20 we all do what we do to get by. Hughes is well built for his size. He will get heavier, but will never be considered anything but a small.d.man. He is very similar is size and skating to Phil Housley. Housley was the most dynamic skating d man I saw play growing up. He was awesome, played when a few guys still didn't wear helmets and Probert was on the ice. Hughes knows how to use his body while defending, this is something I wasn't expecting. While I don't expect him to ever be a physical guy, I do predict that he will surprise people with well timed physical play, much like EP40 has done, while be taller and lighter than Hughes.

Pettersson wows on world stage ......again.

Since WN is fresh from taking a full season off... unlike EP40 that actually played hockey this year. Sarcasm for those that take things literally -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

Looking at the last game between St Louis and SJ, Caufield came off my list of options. Just not fast enough to be a small player in the league, IMO. -

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Phat Fingers replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Still, that would have been huge. We would be without Hughes and EP40 as a result, so in the long term, CBJ may have helped us. -
I think we have the vets. This group has one character trait that the Oilers lacked, confidence. They won't always win, but they believe in themselves a s group. Brock was a bit shaky but gained it back, Ep40, Bo and now Hughes are so strong in their self belief, it's really astounding. It's not being cocky or arrogance and this team is going to have it in spades.
-
Props! Hughes was the guy JB wanted cause of his possession game. His zone exits and entries were more than double any other d man in his brief debut. These are pros and Hughes blew them away. Possession was our strongest aspect during the peak Sedin years. It is the key to any real success and when your GM doesn't draft a d man for 6-8 years in the top 2-3 rounds other than Yann (look both ways) Sauve, it can really create a void. The increased presence of D men being taken in the top 60 by a Nucks GM is so very important. Hughes is a guy who creates chemistry too. I think he could be paired with anyone and play either side, especially on the PP. Get him and a healthy OJ feeding pucks and keeping possession will only increase Ep40's numbers. This team will be able to do things it hasn't in a long time.
