This☆☆☆☆☆ We need defence so badly that we really couldn't put it off any longer. In two drafts we brought in OJ, Hughes and Woo. Those three are our future defence and we should be happy about that.

Pure comic joy has ensued in Edmonton since that draft... unless your an Oilers fan. How do you think they feel for not taking Tkachuk. Think of how he would look with McJesus.

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
Phat Fingers replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Considering how well Utica has done since being brought back from oblivion 5-6 years ago, yes this seems incredibly short sighted. They made the playoffs in the last 4 years with a trip to the final if I remember correctly? Utica has had season that Nucks fans could only dream to have right now. So injuries to the NHL team are an ongoing issue mainly on defence and Sutter, who has been injured since we traded for him. OJ got hurt in Utica, he alone would have addressed many concerns. Do things need to improve, yes. But chill Utica fans, JB has proven he can draft, drafted players add depth better than any other way, but it takes time. Brisbios and Sautner have earned call up time and Gaudette was likely intended for Utica all year, but Sutter. Had Gaudette been in Utica, there is your center problem fixed, had OJ not been injured, there is your defence fixed. This happens and it sucks, so what, move on and look to next season. -
Nor for me in terms of Quinn and what he should bring to the team. But it is one skill that EP40 has that Quinn doesn't.

Woo'a point production isnt a giant surprise. He is a good player. As another poster pointed out, he could be the reason others are producing so well. It is as valid as your POV. It is a good sign. That's all. Dont think we can look beyond anything. Hut at least the analytical typea can point to a significant PPG increase in his draft plus one year. Silver lining?

Agreed. We are in stealth tank mode now. The club is doing the right thing in sitting Hughes and I guarantee management is secretly happy that Hughes is injured just enough to not hit the 10 game plus 1 totals to free up a spot in the Seattle draft. Had we been still in the hunt, I would have been upset. Hughes will make an impact with his great IQ. To those that think he wont be able to pull the same moves in the NHL, he first beats his check with his IQ. Look at his timing of when he makes a deke. He gets the other player to commit or catches them on the wrong skate and then bang, Hughes is gone. With his edge work and skating, this will translate. But it's his IQ that makes it work, just like EP40. Hughes lacks anywhere near to EP40's shot, but his role is going to be to create chaos and disrupte the defensive setup of the opposing team. Drawing the extra man and getting guys like EP40 and Brock a bit more time. Look at what EP40 can do at the dots with a second of time. Beat the goalie clean. We have lacked a defender that can make a pass or beat a guy with skating to free room on the attack. This teams transition game is its weakest link. This is where Hughes comes in. This is why OJ was drafted. They have excellent transition games as defenders. What's cool IMO is that they both have very different styles of transitioning the puck up to the forwards. They are going to be harder to defend. Not many will be able to contain Hughes, but it's not going to often that if Hughes gets contained, that the guy checking OJ will be able to to it very well. Depth at a key position. It's going to be awesome.

Go get crushed grape. His stats are great, sure he is the 5th leading scorer on his team, which would be expected for a defence man. I am not a huge fan of comparisons for prospects which have the tag line "The next one etc." Folks maybe mistakingly misuse the term. I see lots of similarities in playing styles, skating, hitting etc... It reminds us of great players or bad players we have seen before. It could be a clue to their abilities or just smoke. Woo has an abrasive side that reminds people of like Shea Weber, but I am reminded of KB3 with is personality. Woo is not the next of either player. Woo is Woo. His point totals are a positive indication that he can produce good offence and maybe be able to translate that into an NHL role one day. His physical play, defensive awareness and skating will hopefully translate too. So far he is looking blue chip to me and I could see him getting a 9 game stint next season. If he could partner well with Hughes or OJ he will be sure to get points. So if we are lucky he could be a comparable player and have a similar role as Hamhuis had for us. With a but more swagger and chippyness to his game. Long way to go before we get see wha Woo will do.

I have loved the Woo pick from the start. Good scouting and alot of teams slept on him due to his injury. His scoring was there prior to the injury and then while he was put injured the warriors brought in 2 OA d men. When Woo got back, he was off the PP and playing in a shut down role, which he did really well at. Woo is the reason that stats dont define players and that stats dont lie..

I dont think so. At least not right off the bat. Atm, Hutton needs to have Stecher. Edler and Hughes are both lefties and an Edler Schenn pairing, I dont think it would work. So Edler Tanev Hutton Stecher Hughes Schenn.

I listened to the things JB is most excited about with Hughes. He can transition the puck out of his zone, great first pass, a shot that gets thru and creates offence. Those were the same or similar statements around OJ. We have such a need for that type of player and more than one. So we have to draft these players because they are nearly impossible to aquire via any other means. Sure we could likely trade for a top d man, but say goodbye to Boeser, Bo or EP40. He will be 100% healthy for the start of next year. Let's give him like two months past the training camp and see how he is doing. Then we can finally see what we have in him as a player. PS before the 'we should have drafted Tkachuk' talk. Hows Deadmonton liking their draft with Poolparty as compared to Tkachuk? Hope OJ becomes the second best Finn in that draft, but makes it close.

Can we quit talking about Wayne vs Mario!!! Dammit I am jor mentally prepared for the off season! Sorry

What Guaranteed Draft Position? With Simulators, Current #8
Phat Fingers replied to TheGuardian_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Last time the draft was in Van we got the 2nd OA. This league likes to create story lines. This year in Vancouver the temptation to create story lines will be very hard to resist. Imagine the hype around Vancouver getting another set of bros. That is a media sensation. Flip side, does the league want Col to get the 1st OA pick, humiliating the Sens in the process. Does the league quietly place its thumb on the scale? Did anyone think Toronto wasnt getting Mathews? My take. If Col wins thru the Sens the first and their own pick gets a jump upwards then the lotto isnt rigged. Counter intuitive but would the league want to see the possible destruction of one of its Canadian franchises which bring in signing cash for the US clubs down south where the league is trying to grow the game.. Sens fans might just give up this year. It would also turn more Canadian fans to think the league is rigging things. The worst outcome for the league as a whole is to see Col wall away kings in this draft IMO. It would be great for Col, an already strong hockey market on an upswing. Q If the Canucks finally improve their draft position in the lotto. This will confirm that things are somewhat directed. The story line of landing Hughes with Hughes in Vancouver would give this market and huge boost just before the Seattle Expansion. The increased excitement and the increased market interest could encourage even more revenues to come out a hot hockey market and major contributing team to league revenues. Look how much money the league as whole has made since Toronto became competitive again. This excitement in Vancouver would increase the excitement in Seattle. The media coverage of two great and talented US brothers taking over Vancouver would get alot of media hype in Seattle. Add Brock, Adam and Thatcher to the mix and that's a story US media could follow in a city that is only a few hours away. For all the wrong reasons I think the NHL head office types could finally benefit Vancouver. So if Col drops at the draft this year and Vancouver rises, my tinfoil hat gets and upgrade and the league IMO directs the draft to bolster the league as a whole. -
Been hoping to read about Linus Karlsson for 4-5 pages. Haven't seen much about him yet. I am someone guilty of de railing a thread here and ther, but can we get some information on this kid? The club was hot for him at the draft. This scouting group doesn't get excited for the wrong player often. Would Luke to see why.

IFDK what hill TL died on, but he was there to buffer management from the fans, media and an ownership that can get in the way. That's alot of reasons to leave in Van City. What I want to know is how mutual the split was. Did TL have enough and thought JB could handle things without him taking the heat? Looking forward to hearing the story when it comes out.

Woo doesn't crack our roster this season and he us too young to play in the AHL for another year. Woo could play his way onto the roster. Is he going to be worse than Pouliot? Could he out play Biega? For his development I hope he can earn a 9 game stint. It would give him some cash, a taste of the show and a good idea of what he is playing for. Send him to the WJC and then let him destroy the WHL and even get some AHL time somewhere at the end of the year. I don't think this club can concern it self with getting full value of ELC's. Woo is a stud pick, Hughes is a stud pick and Madden is a stud pick. All 3 could go in a 1st round of a re draft. That says alot. Please sign Myers!!

Some will freak out, call for JB,'s head call Hughes a fail and generally be unpleasant. When Hughes turns it around and shows everyone why he was so highly touted, these same posters will disappear. To return everytime Hughes has a bad game etc...
-
Oops.... to the above post, well I forgot which thread I was on.
-
I think EP40 is still the front runner and if Hughes can get into a few games I think he could have an immediate impact on our offence. He may not help us keep them out very well to start but if this team could start to run and gun offensively until the end of the year, it would be fun to watch and EP40 would rack up some points and win the Calder. All of the above would give the team a positive end to the year, make the fans happy and give the club a boost going into the off season which could have real impact next year. First thing I would do to turn this franchise around is find us some talent at the draft. CHECK! The next thing I would let these guys take rolls when they are ready. When that is, no matter how young, bring them in. CHECK! The third thing I would do is get the right coach. Fail.... WD CHECK! Green is saying and doing the things I would want a coach to do with our team atm. The final thing I would do is not hesitate to use stop gaps until the club is able to find and produce talent internally. Even if these players cost more or dont work out, they are not going to impact our long term negativily. CHECK! JB is doing most of what I would expect and wish our GM to do. Mainly drafting and developing. He is finding talent at the draft. We can see the future core already filling out. By having the role players be veterans I agree with. We will improve as Bo, Brock, Elias, Jake, Adam, Stecher, Hughed, OJ, Woo and Demko improve. So the future is bright and I gotta wear shades!
-
Well now we can quit speculating and now see over the next few years if Alf is right or not.... For all Canucks fans I really hope he is.
-
Alf... Layoff the comparisons for Hughes. He is a very exciting player and he has some exceptional strengths. It is my expectation that he will be a tonic for this team, but let Hughes be Hughes. Dahlin is a heckuva player and we would all be excited to have him on our roster. Let's just hope that we somehow got the steals of the draft in Hughes at 7, Woo in the 2nd round and Madden.

Atm I don't OJ is a good trade asset. Only if a no brainer trade that would never happen comes up. Our right side can be addressed via FA IMO. This team is on the verge and folks around the league have taken notice. If we can bring in a solid top 4 RHD thru FA and re sign Edler we have the vets in place to provide a frame work to bring in our young prospects. Tanev would be great on a team with depth so I expect he could bring back a decent but not crazy return. Stecher is a top 4 guy and if Tanev was more durable... but he isnt. Essentially I would like to see JB go heavy after Myers while everyone else is going after EK. Then if things shake out, trade Tanev and re sign Elder. BTW Hughes can also play the right side. I am sure he could play any position other than Goalie at a very high level. Schenn and Biega are decent 6-7 guys. Saunter is another. We need a top pairing guy atm. But someone who can slot down in 2-3 years and that's Edler. Myers would likely be our top pairing guy if he signed here for his contract.
-
One thing this team has is time. OJ has time. I agree that he would be in our lineup if healthy after his start in the AHL. He has Hughes have a ton of skill and abilities this team currently lacks severely.

Both Palmu and Gads started in the ECHL.... Gads wasn't going to improve beating up on kiddies. Palmu went back Europe and is still a Canucks prospect. Lind was also not going to benefit from playing more CHL games. Both Hads and Lind have made progress in their games after some injuries and adjustments.... so what is the problem other than an unhappy Dahlen? Should management critically evaluate Cull at the end of the year, yes absolutely. But they should fo that every year with everyone.
