  1. Time for someone to finally point to the page in the hockey rule book that says..... "If you dont make the NHL by your third year you can't become a top d man?" Ohlund might take exception to that. Why does OJ have to win the Norris Trophy to be a good to really good d man? No one has ever though OJ as a number one guy. It doesn't preclude him from making us wrong one day. We have six holes on defence that could be filled right now. A healthy OJ would be seeing some NHL minutes this year IMO. Not for long with a goal for next year taking a fair amount of games. So if he is ready for camp, which he wasnt this year, then why wouldn't he be able to take a fair amount of minutes in the NHL? He would have been our most offensive d man on this years roster. Hughes will take that title for the next decade. But it's nice to have more than one.
  2. Bravo sir. Well said and one most certainly would argue that our core is just starting to come together. Big question to the bay side. What is the biggest weakness to TO and Edmonton. Balance between the forwards and defence. If Edler hadn't been taken in the 3rd round, the next highest team drafted d man on our cup run roster was Bieksa in the 5th round. That is not a recipe that can repeated. Blind luck and counting on finding late round gems is not a sound long term plan. I buy lotto tickets too. Taking top rated d men is important. They take longer to develop but become essential any long term success.
  3. Yes, but that's one game. I dont like Guddy with Pouliot, but think he does really decent with Edler and better with Hutton. Edler and Tanev aren't great together, but they take on a higher Qualcomm too. Hutton is okay, but not our best guy. IMO
  4. So McDavid would have been run out if the league had he taken 11.5, I doubt it I disagree with you second premise. The high end players are actually literally taking money away from the middle and low end guys. There is a hard cap. Only so much to go around. So the more McDavid takes means that the guys down the line have less pay, added to that, the team suffers and the fans lose.
  5. Hold on there bub. You have no idea what kind if person I am and shove that kind of statement were that sun doesn't shine. You have an unhealthy habit of throwing out gross judgments based on one person's opinion of a hockey player that played 2 decades ago. I have my opinion and you have yours. I didn't bring in personal insults and you want to judge my character cause I don't like Keith Tkachuk. You like him, well good for you, but dont judge me cause I don't. Take your "insight" and CDC shrink act and screw off.
  6. I dont know how old you are but I followed the former jets in the peg that became the coyotes. Keith signed an offer sheet that paid him a huge stack of cash and then flaunted his cash around the peg like a giant turd. He lit cigars with 100 dollar Bill's. This is the time when the peg lost the jets and had traded Selane away to keep Tkachuk. The next year the jets were gone and the offer sheet was the nail in the coffin. How's that for being a giant ass to a Canadian market. He may have become a better team player but I will always remember the ass that played in Winnipeg. This was widely reported on and easy to find on your own. I dont feel.the need to source this for you.
  7. It's not resigning Boeser that will matter, we have to do that. Its whether his character leads him to push for more and more money. Nylander sat out, negativity affecting the team and was rather selfish in doing so. He could have signed easily for 6 million and been with the leafs at the start of the year. When your getting 6 million, why do you fight for another few hundred thousand. Your stinking rich and have a paycheck for the next 6 years. That's greed IMO. That can take hold and effect negotiations with other pending players. So is Boeser the type of guy to be greedy for another million on top of his 6 or 7 million per year deal like Nylander? I dont think so. Was Horvat? No. I hope his leadership and example runs off on others. Will we see EP40 break the team to earn another million or two a year or leave it on the table to make the team better as he will be stinking rich either way? Had McDavid signed for 10 million, is he not rich? Could that 2 million help his team and his success if it could go to another salary? Would Leon have been signed for as much if McDavid had set an example and still bee stinking rich. Cap management has to be factored into drafting. Look at Bo vs Monahan/Driasilt. Bo signed a reasonable contract with a team first perspective. He is the best player based on minutes and points vs cost. His character was a selling point on drafting him. That choice to not get greedy on his part will give him and the team a better chance of success over the length if the deal. He is also stinking rich. That's why I didn't want Tkachuk. I have some concern about Hughes, but with Brock next and Horvat already showing an example, I think our cap will not become a obstacle to success.
  8. It's a low bar Ray. Glad Hutton has high trade value, trade him. We need to fix the defence and other than re signing Edler (trade him and the re sign him, but re signing Edler should be a priority IMO). IMO Guddy is not string enough to keep Pouliot out of danger. Guddy needs a stronger d partner and This defence is holding the team back and Edler is our best d man. Our defence needs a do over. Not easy and OJ's injury and Trymakin not being here has hindered the change over. If the right d man is there at the TDL or in the off season, sign, trade or draft him. The guys we have aren't enough
  9. I dont like Tkachuk.... yes. Is he a good player.... yes. The whole thing started with a report that MT was seeking money north of Johnny Hockey. In the 9 mil range. Very much a reminder of what his dad did to the Jets. Also after the recent Nylander issue in TO and with our young ELC players, do we want a prominent player in the locker room getting greedy as an RFA. That is a the type of issue that can derail a successful rebuild. I did not want Kieth access to the canucks youth movement. He put himself first above his team and club. I suspect Matt will do the same. No proof, but my concern was that he would be just like his dad. That report was speculative, but it did bring home why I did not favour Matt at the draft. It appears that JB and co didn't either as they did not even interview Matt.
  10. Sign him immediately and figure out that expansion draft later. Playing around with college picks is not recommended. His bro is going to get picked elsewhere, push Quinn off and he could just decide to join his brothers team in 2 years as s college FA. Woo is not in the plans for next season and would still have to return to JR. We will continue to draft usable players and replacing a Hutton at this point wont be hard.
  11. Some 21 y/o do have character issues. Nylander didn't do the leafs any favours did he... I predict that Tkachuk will do similar and ask for alot of cash ala his dad. The basis of my criticism of Tkachuk was two fold. He is reported to be seeking money in the 9 million dollar range, sound familiar, and he reminds me of his dad , a player I couldn't stand. BTW, I never said he wasnt a good player, just that I don't like him. That isn't to say I can be wrong and maybe Matt is a stand up guy and I rushed to judgement. The person that can't admit they might have been wrong about something isnt me 5th, it's you. That's why you get so prickly even with general critiques of your view point.
  12. Speaking of not bringing logic to the CDC... exhibit number one, the 5th.
  13. Woo is 6th in scoring in the WHL with Ty Smith leading. That's a comparison on it's own. Has Ty Smith graduated to the NHL and I am comparing a WHL player to him? They literally lead play against each other, were both drafted in the same class, play the same position and are only a handful of points away from each other in scoring. I guess you dont compare apples to, idk, apples. Funny though, when I wrote that post, somehow I thought you of all posters would internalize it. I think that has alot more to do with you than anyone else.
  14. Agreed. EP40 and Markey are why we are looking good at the half way mark. Bo has to also be considered as another potential MVP and even Edler has stepped up to play like a veteran number one d man at times. Alot of games have been won based on the play of 3 key guys this year, EP40, Markey and Bo. I gotta give Bo credit for carrying such a heavy load with Sutter and Beagle out early. Without him doing that, or season would be over already.
  15. He did well for his first year here too. Many saw WD as a development coach. Maybe that's not what he is in the NHL. WD has a good record with veteran laden teams so far. His development abilities here are what his is being derided for. Green on the other hand is a coach that seems to do well with developing younger players. They do similar things, but I don't see WD sitting MDZ and playing Pouliot until he starts gaining confidence. Green would be the prefect coach for Trymakin. I agree. He is the right coach to develop this team. WD wasn't. But would Green get as much out of a vet line up in its last years together.... maybe not.
  16. It's not about being a contender this year. But that this team could make the playoffs is a huge leap forward from last year. Considering the age of our star players, we will track upwards for a long time. Now it's about addressing weaknesses and to truly do that stress needs to be applied. The playoffs aren't going to hurt this bunch, but help them grow.
  17. Best drafting GM in club history or will be. Yet there is a vocal and hopefully a minority that doesn't get it. The need to pick apart certain draft choices is a nervous habit on the CDC. Maybe created after decades of really bad drafting. Even after bringing in Boeser and EP40 among others JB is still vilified for taking two players Virtannen, though that noise is finally dying down, and OJ. The anger isnt due so much to the path of the player taken vs some player taken afterwards. No thought to long term projections, serious team needs and team building. If a LW was the BPA in 10 consecutive draft years, there are posters who would want to take all ten of them. Look at the team that is coming into focus right now and tell.me what the biggest need is. If you dont pick defence, please go away, you are an idiot.... kidding, but not really. You dont get to fix certain positions on the fly. They are very hard to project and to develop. Defence and Goal are the two that come to mind. Look how long Markey has taken to get to where he is right now. Demko was picked in the same draft as JV, he has only 2 NHL starts. By the standards applied to others Demko is a bust. But people mostly understand that development takes time and generally pays off. Looking at JV, the team took a player who was physically well.beyond his peers, but mentally needed to mature. So he has taken longer to develop mentally. Now some of the hard work is paying off. He is NHL worthy. If he can become more consistant he will be top six worthy. Progress. When OJ was picked, physically he was under developed compared to his peers but very mature and smart. He has worked at developing his physical self, but there have been some setbacks. Yet he has by most accounts been completely committed to becoming a better player. He hasn't lost his maturity or his intelligence, the main reasons he was picked where he was, or the skills like his passing and hockey IQ as witnessed by his ppg which were excellent in Ligia and appeared to be a strength in his injury shortened AHL season. So what's the problem with OJ? Is he getting bigger and stronger, I would say yes. Is he committed to making the NHL, yes. Are his injuries career ending? No. But Matt Tkachuk was picked right after him and is playing in the NHL right now. So what? We have other guys playing in the NHL right now too vs guys drafting before them. A number of players on this team were steals in their draft years or scouted and traded as undervalued by their former club. The agnst displayed around these picks are that of spoiled selfish children. It would be one thing if we had no other picks that have far exceeded their draft position or where completely sucking. But currently we have a rookie player who is a lock for the Calder and already gaining some Hart trophy consideration. One season after having another player miss the Calder only due to injury. Had Brock been healthy, 40g was well within reach. He would have won the Calder in a tight race. So we have the best and brightest toy, all shiny and wonderful and some of us are bitching to our parents that we dont have every nice shiny toy. Selfish spoiled children. Harping on prospects before 5 years is stupid. Development happens at different places and is different for different positions. Or is what EP40 doing the new normal?
  18. Lots of room on the wagon. I brought hot chocolate and whiskey.
  19. Agreed. I dont think this team has any concern about signing Hughes immediately. It will put butts in the seats and be another reason to renew season tickets.
  20. Selection to team Canada is a political beast. Woo missed the cut by a very small margin. Woo is producing offence a a ppg pace, near what Ty Smith is producing. Yet Woo can do alot of things Ty can't. Had Woo not been injured in his draft year, he would have been in the mix of d men taken in the top half of the first round. Disagree if you want, but to use a WJT selection with TC doing so poorly one has to wonder if TC missed its Woo factor. Maybe, maybe not.
  21. Why. Training camp is long way away. He has plenty of time to train. He can even work on his legs, just not in ever direction. Kids recover quickly. In some cases players even improved their skating by taking the time to work on technical issues. A whole lot can happen and we should wait for judgment, we just dont know.

  23. IDK I can think of many injuries that are worse long term. But I am a paramedic and am thinking way beyond hockey. Context matters with assessing injuries. Knee injuries are fairly common with alot of professional athletes and full recoveries are the norm. We have come a long way since the days of Bobby Orr. OJ wasnt carted off the ice, the Zamboni didn't run him over and he wasnt hit by the team bus. I think OJ over trained and his injuries were both a direct result. Both surgeries are being done with an eye to his future. His rehab should be well monitored. He is young and should be awesome at healing. He will be able to train away from the ice and next time he places up, I can bet he will be wearing the best knee brace money can buy.
  24. Cool, I may have jumped the gun. I read your post differently... oops.
  25. Brown couldn't keep his hands off if other players wives or so the story goes.. It seems that we can't go to a cup final without that story making the rounds. Brown was a offensive defenseman, we still need one of those... Hedican was the disappointment IMO. Such a fantastic skater with hands of stone. Nedved was shipped out due to some disturbing public accusations of violence against a woman. The story faded after he left. He went on to have a solid career and left early to go back to Europe. Those didn't surface right away but that was the story floating around at the time. Dan Quinn was also moved out at the same time.
