  1. Carcone had a good prospects tournament last year too and then looked overmatched most of the year in the AHL. I'd be happy if he just looks like he belongs in the AHL before getting too excited about his play in another prospects tournament with little defensive structure. That second goal was pretty but about as well defended as some bantam games I've seen.
  2. Still required reading out here in Utica as it was many years ago when I was in school.
  3. I bet he would still take the money. If it's a two way contract with over $200K in the AHL like slightly older players get it might be a difficult decision but $70K or $657K there is no choice. I get that teams are going to want to slot their first time RFAs with little to no NHL experience to under $100K so they don't drive the market up but there is nothing preventing them from doing so if they really want to deter a waiver claim on a player they don't want to lose.
  4. I can't imagine a single player would exercise that option. In the case of McEneny he would be willingly turning down $657K and flying first class to play for $70K and riding the bus. Yes he would be playing every game in the AHL rather than eating popcorn a lot from the press box in the NHL but $500K buys a lot of popcorn. Besides there is nothing stopping Vancouver from signing him to a one way contract as somewhat of a deterrent to being claimed if they really wanted to.
  5. You are correct in that there are no re-entry waivers anymore so the risk is losing McEneny at the end of preseason when they have to get the roster down to 23 players. That is the time that Corrado was lost two years ago and Etem last year. Because he is only 23 years old and progressed significantly last year the waiver risk is real. If he does clear waivers and called up a some point he wouldn't require waivers again unless he either plays 10 NHL games or spends a total of 30 days on the NHL roster.
  6. Evan McEneny is going to create an interesting problem for the Canucks. Only 23 years old and showed great potential in the AHL last year who just signed a cheap two year contract and is no longer waiver exempt. Young enough to be considered a free prospect by another team at waiver time.
  7. Per Capfriendly the only player under contract right now that can have his ELC slide is Juolevi if he goes back to juniors. I don't believe it can slide if he is playing in a professional league in Europe.
  8. Honestly the Canucks may not want to commit a contract to him for this season and let him develop in Finland while retaining his rights. Right now assuming all of the RFAs that were qualified are signed they have 46 of 50 contracts used an 47 if Olli Juolevi doesn't go back to juniors. So let's assume 47 because you don't want Juolevi being sent back to to juniors strictly for the reason of needing his contract to slide. If they sign Alex Kerfoot when he becomes a UFA in August now they are at 48 contracts a month before training camp and the young stars tournament. Too many wasted contracts on guys like Mackenzie Stewart and Yan Pavel Laplante (I'd also include Michael Carcone). I shake my head every time I see someone post a free asset when the Canucks sign another undrafted overage player out of the Q. There are no free assets if they tie up a contract spot for three years. That's what one year prove it to me AHL contracts are for.
  9. Doesn't like the AHL is an option this year.
  10. I honestly don't know but 19 points in 65 AHL games I'm not sure how effective it was anyway.
  11. Green almost exclusively used Virtanen on the RW even though he generated many scoring chances streaking down the left side. He always lined up on the right side for faceoffs but often found himself crossing over to the left side as the play broke through the neutral zone.
  12. Don't pencil him in for Utica just yet.
  13. I would certainly hope that the Canucks do not rush Demko up next year to back up Markstrom nor do I believe they will. Demko had a great string of games down the stretch but he also had a number of bad games particularly at the very end when he started fighting the puck and getting beat on rebounds. He still has a lot of work to do to be ready for the NHL and Vancouver will not be a strong team for a few years. "What's the protocol with a future star netminder though? Is his reputation ruined by a couple poor early showings? Does he retreat back to the AHL and start frequenting the local bars? I just don't see how giving a guy like Thatcher any playing time in any league is a dangerous thing. Either he plays poorly and apologizes or he becomes the goalie we all know he will become after a couple weeks/months of adjustment." Take a look how the Pittsburgh Penguins handled Matt Murray. Two years ago as a rookie in the AHL Murray had a GAA of 1.58, Save % of 0.941 and 12 shutouts over 40 games. Did they rush him to the NHL immediately to back up Fleury the next season? No they left him in the AHL where he played another 31 games the following season while Zatkoff was the backup until Fleury went down with an injury late in the season and then they called up Murray who lead them to a Stanley Cup. Demko's numbers and level of play didn't come close to Matt Murray in their respective AHL rookie seasons even though you can see an improvement as the season went on. The bottom line is goalies are known for taking longer to develop and playing in the AHL makes a lot more sense than backing up in the NHL.
  14. I agree with that too but at the end of each game if your skill guy scores 2 goals and is on the ice for 3 against the team is more likely to lose.
  15. I agree with everything you said. Being strong on the puck and responsible in your own end doesn't mean clippings his offensive wings. Case in point just before Goldy scored his first goal in Utica Friday night he had a terrible give away right in the deep slot that Bachman bailed him out with a great save which lead to a 2 on 1 back the other way and the Goldy goal. If Bachman doesn't come up with that save it's a 1 - 1 hockey game instead of a 2 - 0 Comets lead. Sure I'm nitpicking a little and Goldy wasn't used to his new team and teammates yet but he can't be just an offensive threat and not care what he does in the defensive zone.
  16. People complain about Willie, Trevor and Benning but if ownership is more concerned with selling tickets than a proper rebuild it will be a very long time before the Canucks are a Stanley Cup contender. Sorry but as an outsider that is how I see things out in Vancouver.
  17. I don't disagree with that and if the Canucks were a playoff team next year it would make sense for him to be in the NHL if he is contributing. But I don't think the Canucks will be a playoff team next season and they may be better served by the Leafs model for a rebuild which was signing a number of NHL depth players to short term contracts while keeping the kids down on the farm an extra season. The Leafs also flipped a lot of these expiring contracts into more draft choices. Now their rebuild was expedited by winning the lottery in a year that a generational player was available but the bottom line is they had a long term strategy approach and stuck with it.
  18. In three short games that I saw Goldy play I would agree with this.
  19. Do the Canucks have the patience to leave Goldobin in the AHL like the Leafs did with a player like Kasperi Kapanen? I doubt it.
  20. That is exactly how I see MacEwen fitting in next year. Grenier is a UFA and I don't see where he fits in the Canucks plans so I don't see them resigning him.
  21. Every year we keep hearing about the great prospects coming the following year and we are still waiting. Seriously though it is a big jump from juniors to the AHL and the numbers these kids put up as 18 and 19 year olds rarely follow them to the AHL as 20 and 21 year olds.
  22. It's not impossible but it is also not likely. Yes the Comets just got Goldobin sent here but we have two games with Syracuse who just got 7 players from Tampa and when we played them a weekend ago they beat us 5 - 1 with a depleted roster that included 9 dmen. The Comets are coming off a weekend where they haven't scored in over 120 minutes. Goldy now is probably too little and definitely too late.
