  1. You forget the most important aspect of it. The US radar and defense shield as well as US dominance in aerospace engineering. With the Avro set to be a world leading interceptor capable of catching bombers and missiles at high altitude the US shield would have effectively been useless without canada's real estate. HUGE gaps would exist for Russia to simply mow through. The US was also ramping up for the tech race at the real start of the cold war. Having poached german and central european scientists the Arrow represented a technology the US didn't have. As Canada was a NATO ally but NOT a US one, there were concessions offered and given Deifenbakker via the US government to scrap the program. The irony of the endless talk of Conservatives being more friendly towards or better for out military is laughable when you look at the actual records. Neither side of the fence has been great but only one has effectively scrapped 2 very essential aspects of canadian military abilities We gave up our ship building and our aerospace engineering and aeronautics in the late 50s and early 60s to essentially allow the US to be our protector. We now buy our weapons from them for the most part. It's laughably sad. The possibility of redrafting and revamping the Arrow project with modern technology is very real, it also would add massive benefits of R&D and high paying jobs to Canadas GDP. But current agreements with the US and NORAD/NATO would effectively make it very very hard to accomplish. Added that the world is moving away from pilot operated warbirds and it's hard to say this would ever get back off the ground
  2. Actually, when you look at our roster, who will be on ELC's and safe under the CBA rules vs who will have to be protected Benning has maneuvered this team marvellously towards the expansion draft. Again. Believe it or not, Motte, Ericsson, Sutter, Pouliot, Stecher are names that could go. Petersson, Horvat, Demko, Woo, Boeser, All actually safe/protected under the rules. Our future core and most valuable pieces will be essentially safe heading in to the expansion draft
  3. I'm not attacking you, I'm attacking that whole line of reasoning from anyone who would post it. Our immigration laws are far from failing no matter what some say
  4. Wait, hold on a second. Failing? How exactly are our immigration laws failing when if anything they're stronger than they've been in years? The ONLY thing that is different between 2014 and now in regards to illegal immigrants is where they are coming from and why They are in fact coming from America and the why is as simple as a cheetah with a twitter account. The US border is the #1 entry point for people entering Canada illegally, the other two borders we have in there Atlantic and Pacific do a damned fine job of deterring illegals. Our laws and our enforcements are far from failing and I dare ask you to prove your statement otherwise.
  5. It's simple. They dug their feet in and drew the line in the sad when Benning was hired. They staked their claims and stated benning was a bum in his first year based on his trades and signings. I was one of those people. Within 18 months I changed my tune and openly admitted it The issue is, that some people refuse to admit they might be wrong. tribal mind set as it was. The same reasons trump can't be wrong The earth can't be round Climate change can't be exacerbated by man Benning can never be a good GM Two drafts ago, petterson was too skinny, too slight should have picked X Y and Z. I wanted Vilardi or Glass myself but wasn't upset at Petterson even though I felt he was potentially a long term prospect. Others were dead set against him simply because Benning picked him. Even if Petterson wins the calder, scoring titles etc their new statement will be that "he was the obvious pick". With Hughes, they know that he's potentially the best defenseman in the 1st round of the draft regardless of Dahlins skill but cannot stop saying how he hasn't signed and as such he's a flight risk. You cannot win man. Like at all. When people have made up their minds it is what it is.
  6. I'm right there too, I figured Hughes was gone top 3 myself
  7. Trudeau signed a UN compact that is not, was not and will never be legally binding that does not threaten Our sovereignty Our borders Does not change our immigration policy Our ability to police our borders or our ability to vette who gets in and who doesn't. We signed an agreement in principal to ensure that human migration is done without human rights violations towards migrants, to share security information and to ensure that everyone does their share to make sure no one country is totally overwhelmed. And the idiocy bought the line that "we are throwing open our borders to muslims and sharia law" hook line and sinker. https://undocs.org/A/CONF.231/3 The single most damning issue is that this compact is literally right there fore the reading, is only 32 total pages long (including cover) and NOBODY reads it, they're just taking facebook pages as valid in their stories instead of just looking for simple facts. Took me less than 11 seconds to find the document. here is the single most essential paragraph in it. Note where it shows we literally give up nothing. This is the most important paragraph followed by this one small statement posted under it. (c) National sovereignty. The Global Compact reaffirms the sovereign right of States to determine their national migration policy and their prerogative to govern migration within their jurisdiction, in conformity with international law. Within their sovereign jurisdiction, States may distinguish between regular and irregular migration status, including as they determine their legislative and policy measures for the implementation of the Global Compact, taking into account different national realities, policies, priorities and requirements for entry, residence and work, in accordance with international law; This Global Compact presents a non-legally binding, cooperative framework that builds on the commitments agreed upon by Member States in the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.
  8. Actually, the only reason people play the race card is that invariably these arguments can NEVER be made without comments like "third world dumps" or mentioning a culture, people, race or religion" as a way to present their argument. Added that people then use issues at home that have never mattered to them outside of their presented argument to justify their views and it just falls utterly flat.
  9. Canucks win 1st overall for the first time ever, trade down to 3rd or 4th net a huge return and all toronto sports can talk about is how vancouver let go of the greatest player ever and what this means for Quinn when his contract is up. For 15 seconds. Then a 4 hour segment on what kind of bagel Matthews had that morning
  10. Numerous people have questioned whether he'll be a center in the NHL. I've kind of been on the Kakko train for a while myself. What this 17 year old is doing on TPS is crazy
  11. OK let's see if In can bridge the divide here. Admittedly I have been guilty of being too harsh on some for being so anti Virtanen so let's see if I can be a better person than I have Were Ehlers and Nylander the better picks? Yes, it looks like they might be better point producing players and top 6 wingers. Are they the more EFFECTIVE players though? While they seem to be productive based on their point totals alone in playoff hockey, the points they produced seem to come from games that were won very handily by their teams, where as in games they lost or that were close their production was entirely limited while players similar to Virtanen produced fairly evenly. I dare say that Virtanen is still improving, but also when it counts is the more effective player. A 70 point winger is all well and good. But no team in the history of the NHL has won without muckers, grinders and hard nosed wingers. I think when it all shakes out Virtanen will prove to be the more effective player when it all matters over the "better pick" Because like it or not, what happened THEN will never be as important as what is happening now or will happen. Because what happened THEN is all fans of teams like Toronto and Edmonton seem to have while what happens now and will happen are all that matter for a team building itself to contention. Jake is just one piece of the puzzle and maybe with Ehlers or Nylander, we never draft DiPietro, Hughes, Petterson, Woo or Boeser? Things happen for reasons.
  12. Ok. Was just curious. Giggling a little but just curious
  13. Just so I am clear. Draft status was important. Ehlers or Nylander were the better pick. Projected stats mean nothing. Virtanen scoring more then he was and having more goals than both of them right now is not important and them scoring more previously is essential to the argument? So. Is the past more important than the now? Or the future? Or is their past more important? Your argument is kind of all over the place at the moment so I'm trying to nail it down. Because on one hand. Their past seems important. But the right now doesn't. On the other their past is important but Jake's trending and future isn't. So any clarification on that would be great
  14. A muppet you say... Did he look like this and call himself dreger?
  15. Looks like he was born and raised in France. Long known criminal. Potentially radicalized in prison French authorities detained five people as they hunted Wednesday for a suspected extremist who sprayed gunfire at one of Europe's most famous Christmas markets in the eastern city of Strasbourg. The government raised the security alert level and sent police reinforcements to Strasbourg, where some 350 security forces are searching for the assailant, while French President Emmanuel Macron was holding an emergency security meeting at the presidential palace in Paris with top officials, including the prime minister, interior, defence and foreign affairs ministers. Police have identified the suspect as Strasbourg-born Cherif Chekatt, 29. Police say he was wounded in a gunfight with soldiers after the Tuesday night attack but escaped, and a top official said he might have gone to neighbouring Germany. Prosecutor Remy Heitz said the suspected gunman was shot in the arm during the exchange of fire and then took a taxi to another part of the city during the rampage. Heitz said the man was armed with a handgun and a knife, using them to attack his victims. He also left 12 people injured. Originally, French authorities had said the gunman killed three people. But Heitz said two people were confirmed dead while the third was brain dead. Police officers check cars as a result of the investigation in Lauterbourg, France, at the border crossing the country shares with the German city of Woerth. (Thomas Lohnes/Getty Images) Senior Interior Ministry official Laurent Nunez said the suspect had been radicalized in prison and had been monitored by French intelligence services since his release from jail in late 2015, because of his suspected religious extremism. Nunez said on France-Inter radio that police sought to arrest the man on Tuesday morning, hours before the shooting, in relation to an attempted murder. He was not at home but five other people were detained, authorities said. Heitz said police found a grenade, a rifle and four knives during the search. A spokesperson for Germany's BKA criminal police said Wednesday the suspect had been imprisoned in Germany in 2016 and 2017 on theft charges, and was deported to France in 2017. The attack is a new blow to France, after a wave of Islamic extremist killings in 2015 and 2016, and amid a month of protests against President Emmanuel Macron that have blocked roads around the country, led to rioting in the capital and put heavy strain on police. Witnesses described shots and screams after the gunman opened fire at the Christmas market Tuesday evening in a city that's home to the European Parliament and considers itself a capital of Europe — and promotes itself as the "capital of Christmas." For several hours swaths of the city were under lockdown. Security zone While authorities urged people in the area to stay inside after Tuesday's attack, Strasbourg Mayor Roland Ries told BFM television Wednesday that "life must go on" so that the city doesn't cede to a "terrorist who is trying to disrupt our way of life." The assailant got inside a security zone around the venue and opened fire from there, Mayor Roland Ries said on BFM television. A placard reads 'Tribute to the victims. I am Strasbourg,' in Strasbourg on Wednesday. (Christophe Ena/Associated Press) "I heard two or three shots at around 7:55 p.m., then I heard screams. I got close to the window. I saw people running. After that I closed the shutters. Then I heard more shots, closer this time," said Yoann Bazard, 27, who lives in central Strasbourg. "I thought maybe it's firecrackers," he said, speaking by phone. "And then, as it got close, it was really shocking. There were a lot of screams. ... There were police or soldiers shouting 'Get inside!' and 'Put your hands on your head."' In Germany, interior ministry spokesperson Eleonore Petermann said there's no reason to stay away from Christmas markets there. A Christmas market in Berlin was targeted in a deadly attack two years ago.
  16. Well, to be honest no he's not. Because Baertschi hasn't played since October 24th and only registered 1 point in his 5 games leading up to that injury while Virtanen is playing right now and has 2 points in his last 5 games. By your parameters Virtanen right now is the better player because he is currently playing. While baertschi may never play another game again and has never been healthy a full season in his NHL career So right now, Virtanen as a healthy body is a far more valuable member of the team than Baertschi
  17. Actually. By the numbers, at this stage of things Virtanen is the better player than Baertschi was at the same age for this team and if we project their next 4 years it appears if the current numbers continue that Virtanen will be the better player overall without the benefit of Horvat being his consistent line mate Admittedly it is all subjective possibility but the numbers are indicating that Virtanen will be the better player while playing less minutes, less pp time and more defensive zone starts Sven: https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/b/baertsv01.html Jake: https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/v/virtaja01.html Again, while Sven appears to be the better player at the moment based on his deployment. It by no means shows or states that Virtanen at 26 years old and more ice time, better line mates and PP time won't be a better player
  18. I just need to point this out Rob Neidermeyer, 5th overall Rick Jackman, 5th overall 2007 Stanley cup winners. Brad Stuart, 3rd overall Dan Cleary, 13th overall 2008 Stanley cup winners Bill Guerin*, 5th overall Jordan Staal, 2nd overall 2009 Stanley cup winners My point, because I could go on. Of those examples Guerin is the only standout really. Cleary is the latest pick. But all but 1 of them failed to live up to their draft status yet were still massive parts of stanley cup winning teams. Virtanen, as has been stated before might never be an 80 point player. But if he's a 10 point playing force in the playoffs over 16 wins than he more than justifies his status as a 6th overall pick
  19. I actually read something like that. It was posted in Richmond, but since none of it was ever posted in english due to a complete and utter unwillingness to integrate to canadian society including refusing to display english signage I kind of ignored it
  20. I take the good with the bad. But I'm patient
  21. This poster has had very to the point analysis of each player in Utica for years. I put weight on their opinion.
  22. @UticaHockey Any way you'd like to chime in on this? Was/Is Juolevi progressing at all in the AHL after his first 2 games?
  23. Tracking well based on what? His European coach called him world class. Utica calls him a stalwart. Tracking well meaning not near the top of rookie D scoring or? Cause he is Development hasn't gone well. Gotcha. Except it has. He's 1st pairing in Utica on a defensive team that has been destroyed by injuries and is still middle of the pack in the standings. His coach, ice time and zone starts say you're wring Sheltered? I dare you to post corroborating evidence to back that up. You're speaking of fantasy but haven't once posted anything that is realistic I dare say you haven't watched many games and have yet to post anything remotely educated about this matter Trade value? Botchford? Draft +3 hasn't played an NHL season yet. Total write off. Just like the following players on D listed as the top fantasy D this year who took 2 or 3 years or more to develop Burns Carlson Byfuglien Josi Barrie Giordano Subban And so many more. This is where you come back and mumble something about draft placement and how 5th overall picks need to be home runs then I return with how Lidstrom was drafted 53rd overall and Bill Guerin was 5th stuffed between Stu Barnes and Adam Bennett
  24. Lol. My buddy STILL thinks he was a homerun. I still think of him as Nolen "Stefan" Patrick
