[Report/Rumour] Ethan Bear Contract Talks
JeremyCuddles replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Guy is apparently going to Worlds. Gonna be interesting to see if he can dodge the injury bug. I really hope he does. But we seen OEL have a major injury at Worlds. But he already had his cushy contract. Bear is risking a contract. Knock on wood he stays healthy, I really don't like Worlds representation. But I also get it, most players can't represent their countries. Well, with the league not letting players go to the Olympics nobody can represent their country. So I can see why it'd appeal to so many. -

Correct me if I'm wrong, but she's been AGM for like 14 minutes. This seems like a quick move up the ladder. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Elias Pettersson

I was gonna say they wasted no time locking up Petey. But instead they just ELC'd Petey. Life really do be confusing. -

Trading one or both of Garland and Boeser may help get us something. Really depends on Mayfield's ask. I think he'd be a great partner for Hughes. We can easily survive moving one or both of them, not saying they're bad, just that we have options from within to somewhat fill their shoes for much cheaper. -
So I guess he sits between okay and excellent. Works for me. A guy with no current Selke consideration is not an excellent defensive forward in my books, and there was a time Virtanen was leading our team in takeaways. I remember, cause it was a metric I used to advocate playing him more. Lol. Not saying Petey can't get there, but I dunno. I am just tired of paying people for what-ifs instead of what they are. Teams with players making that kind of money (11mil+ players) aren't exactly lighting the standings/playoffs on fire. The only exception to this rule so far is the Rangers with Panarin and maybe Toronto if you count doing well in the standings but not the playoffs as succeeding. But, Petey is not a guy I'd lowball. If we have to overpay anyone. I'd gladly overpay him, and Hughes. 11.5mil-12mil would hurt, but we'll just cut costs elsewhere. Petey's don't exactly fall into your lap everyday, we can maybe get draft lucky and find bottom 6ers on the cheap. But for a guy with supposed captain consideration it'd be pretty nice if he took a haircut on a contract and signed sub-11mil instead of over. It's not a talent thing that keeps me caring about Petey's cap hit. If there was no cap in this league, I wouldn't care about cap hits at all. Not my money. But sadly with the cap being a thing, it's a discussion that needs to be had and it's never personal. Petey is our best forward and a key cog to our future success. He should by rights be one of if not the highest paid players on the team. But by how much is a debate that needs to happen by management and agent. And since we have nothing to talk about all summer, we may as well argue amongst ourselves as well.
-
But, it does matter. There is this thing called a cap, and the difference between him making 10mil and 12 mil is quite immense. It's cap savings that can put us in a spot where we can retain another quality player instead of losing them cause we can't afford them. Hell, even 10mil vs 11mil is significant. I am pretty sure we still have yet to see a team win a cup with a player making 10+mil. Let alone 11+mil. I want Petey back, but we can't just give players blank checks and expect to compete. It's largely why Toronto are perennial one and done every April.

Excellent defensively is a bit of an overstatement. If he ever approaches the Selke conversation, then I'll say he's am excellent defensive forward. As of now, he's okay defensively at best. Regardless, you don't need to be excellent defensively to make 11mil. So I don't entirely disagree that he may get that. Toronto's top 3 guys make 11mil. He's better than them. Although I do wish he'd take a Barkov contract, I get that's a Florida thing where they have better taxes. But still, just a wish on my part. Barkov is actually excellent defensively and is pretty damn good offensively. Good for 90ish points when healthy. 10.5mil over 8 years is my dream Petey contract.

The more I think about how bad this team was defensively, the more sympathy I have for Myers. This guy had to stand behind any mixture of three forwards that were absolute spectators defensively. Which we know was the case from Tocchet himself. Which again, how do you blame Boudreau for this team's defense? He wasn't the defensive guy as far as I know, and people around here say the NHL isn't a development league, so should we really be expecting him to break out the cones and teach these grown men how to play defence at a basic level? I dunno. I think it's great that Tocchet is going full 3rd grade teacher on the team though. If they were half as bad as he claimed with his back to basics comment. I now feel even worse for Boudreau. It's crazy to hear so many people torch Boudreau when Tocchet roasts the team as unable to even defend at a basic level and management says the team needs, I forget. Major surgery or whatever? Like, if the team was that bad that both management and the current coaching staff are saying, maybe our expectations of what Boudreau should have done are a tad unrealistic. Especially given like I said, management had no faith and were clearly waiting to move on from him. How much power did he actually have? -

OEL broke his foot at Worlds last year, he should have a very lengthy amount of time to heal. I don't believe he's washed up just yet. On a side, rumors are Petey is going to Worlds. Fingers crossed nothing happens to him there. -

It is a tad depressing we need a glorified babysitter for a coach. Especially considering the player that benefited the most from Tocchet is a 30 year old we kind of expect to be a leader. But, yeah. I am not here to argue Boudreau as a better fit for us. I just don't like when people get wrongfully dragged through the mud. Boudreau is a good coach, bad fit for us. Our roster was such a mess Tocchet publicly said they need to learn the basics of defending. At the NHL level. Lol. Also an interesting thing I took away from the media presser was how many players referenced not just Tocchet, but the entire coaching staff. Multiple players mentioned Gonchar and Foote by name, can't recall a time the coaching staff was referenced by name by players instead of just a blanket "the coaching staff is good." Definitely an interesting coaching dynamic we have. I appreciate the fact the entire coaching staff is carrying their weight and it's being noticed by players. -

I wonder what players were saying about Boudreau during last year's media availability. Lol. The thing is, management never supported or believed in Boudreau. When you cut someone's legs out from beneath them, you can't get mad when they fall. Boudreau isn't a bad coach like people claim. Tocchet had the easy portion of the schedule, a healthy Demko, the full support of management and no pressure to win games. He was setup to succeed. Not saying he's a bad coach, but lets be real. They put him in a way better position than they put Boudreau. -

Just finished watching the 3rd group. That was cringe worthy. Our media is ass, say it every year and somehow it gets worse every year. Why was Pear even there? I love him and I defended that contract. But he was fed to the wolves by being out there. Someone should have stepped in and shut down the questions when he was asked the same thing like 3 times. It was clear there was a narrative the media was pushing. -

Petey looks so out of sorts in front of the media. Poor guy. Doesn't help that the questions are awful too. -

[Rumour] Nikita Tryamkin eyeing NHL return
JeremyCuddles replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not sure of the logistics of how their contracts work. But we have a miserable cap situation. Miller and Kuzmenko are like an added 9mil in cap over this year. Holtby and Virtanen's buyouts are thankfully off the books, but immediately eaten up by the aforementioned extensions. No clue where Bear and Kravtsov's extentions put us. Likely not major raises, but not freed cap either. So I dunno if the Canucks are particularly interested in Tryamkin. We don't have his rights or anything. And we're are loaded with LDs, particularly in the 3rd pair spot. -
Did one for Kesler, would look kinda bad if we didn't for our former captain. Regardless of how I feel about him, he should probably have a tribute video. He didn't specifically ask for a trade. The only bad blood is Bo sticking his foot in his mouth. Which is more funny than bad. He played hard here, he just wasn't the leader we hoped he was. Also, we were a really poorly run team. He gave us nothing to cheer for, management didn't give him much to work with. Give him his video, give him the same mixed reception Kesler got, call it a day. Maybe less boos. Like I said, there's no real bad blood with Horvat. At least I don't view it that way, it's fun to meme him. But I don't think I dislike him.
