Sam Bennett by trade or offer sheet
JeremyCuddles replied to JohnnyCanucks12's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
RFAs can't have NTCs I am pretty sure. If I recall it was one of the reasons Nylander held out for so long cause he was worried about being traded. -
Sam Bennett by trade or offer sheet
JeremyCuddles replied to JohnnyCanucks12's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
23 years old in June, found a niche as a tough to play against middle 6 guy. I remember a game where a Calgary Flames' player was hit with a cheap shot and Bennett was first man in to throw down. He could be a really good option with Petey and Boeser as a puck hound. He doesn't have opportunities in Calgary that he'll have here. We desperately need top 6 left wingers and at this point management is taking chances with any one and everyone (IE Tanner Pearson trade). If Bennett can be had for relatively cheap, we'd be remiss not to at least call and see what's up. There was a time Baertschi didn't look like he'd reach his top 6 potential, if not for injuries I'd say he is a legit top 6 winger now. How old was he when we acquired him? 22? 23? And just for added proof that he's got potential still. He had 4 points in 5 games in the playoffs (yeah not world breaking and yeah they lost but still it's pretty good for a guy some were giving up on). He's got that dog in him that I think Management, coaching staff and Canuck fans would really like. -
I don't think it's ice size that is causing fits for Euro and Russian players. It's the 82 game schedule and the level of competition in the NHL that causes problems. Success in the AHL doesn't mean you're better suited to handle the NHL either. Goldy was very good in the A. Hasn't done anything for him at the NHL level. Petey, Aho, Heiskanen, Rantanen all found success in the NHL without AHL experience. If the talent and work ethic is there, any learning curves can be done in the NHL. They practice all summer on smaller ice, they do weeks of preseason on smaller ice, and all their practices during the season are on smaller ice. The transition isn't so difficult that they NEED AHL time or anything or that the benefit is that much greater. Juolevi left North America to get better experience in Liiga, and if not for his season ending injury I would argue he'd have graduated to the NHL without a full AHL season. I dunno, I just don't see the AHL as a must for prospects or even super beneficial to have. Talent and hard work finds a way to succeed in the NHL.

Honestly, I really like your post cause it just goes to show that the demand for players to be in the AHL is a bit overstated. It's nice to have for sure, but other leagues are either on par or ahead of AHL in terms of competition and development.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
JeremyCuddles replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Yeah I mentioned it too, but deleted it to try limit it to just info about Button's draft. If I am LA I probably target Cozens, Turcotte, Boldy or Podkolzin instead. Cozens has speed and size. One of which they generally like the other they really need. Boldy is a two way guy, fits right into their identity imo. Same with Podkolzin but being committed for sure for two years in the KHL may have them thinking they want someone with the possibility of being in the NHL sooner. Turcotte screams LA guy to me. He has all the tools they like, could be in the NHL as early as next season (after his college season ends), is a center and everyone loves centers. -

They'll likely need/want a cheap depth player back. Bennett was a guy I was interested in before his little resurgence as a feisty 3rd liner. Motte and a 2nd/3rd for Bennett. Motte is a Sam Bennett lite and will be cheaper. Get a decently high pick in the 2nd rounder. Would be nice if he could be had for a 3rd rounder but they probably would want a 2nd rounder. Not sure if Motte would fly for them. I really liked his play this season so I may value him more than they would. -
I can't think of a single logical reason Ottawa makes that trade. Unless Dorion wants to out-Milbury Chiarelli.

^ so what you are telling me is in order to become a NHL star you need to average 2 PPG in the AHL. The great CDC meme may actually be true

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
JeremyCuddles replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Seen a recent Mock draft from Button, posted on May 22nd on the TSN website (I'd just link it or whatever but I am tech inept). He's moved Podkolzin back into the top 10. Going to us at 10. I still stand by the opinion that Podkolzin is gone before our pick but if it plays out this way I'd hardly be upset. I know people are hung up on him being Russian and committed to the KHL for 2 more years but I don't think it matters. Anyone we take at 10 is likely 2-3 years from being a legit NHL player anyway. His top 10 is 1: Jack Hughes (NJD) 2: Kaapo Kakko (NYR) 3: Bowen Byram (CHI) 4: Kirby Dach (COL) 5: Cole Caufield (LAK) 6: Dylan Cozens (DET) 7: Alex Turcotte (BUF) 8: Matthew Boldy (EDM) 9: Trevor Zegras (ANA) 10: Vasili Podkolzin (VAN) Notables on the board (based on what I see from a few CDC wishlists) and their rank according to Button's Mock draft: Krebs (11), Newhook (13), Broberg (14), Soderstrom (17), Lavoie (18), Seider (25). Interesting to note that Seider's recent play has not moved him up a whole lot from Button's last Mock draft. He was ranked 26 in the last one, has him going 25 in this one. Same with Lavoie, he actually moved him down his mock draft even after a pretty good playoffs from 15 in his last mock to 18 in this one. -

No, we are only counting their top 4 d-men now. So those small guys don't count. -

If you change the parameters of course it starts to look a certain way. We can't count Krug and Marchand, now we are only counting their top 4 defenders against other top 4s (not to mention Carlo and Chara barely played more than the 3rd pair anyway). What's next? Only players that have last names that start with C count? There is no one way to build a cup team. Shanahan mentioned it in a interview with Tim and Sid. Every time someone wins a cup THAT'S the way to win a cup. Small team like Pittsburgh, big team like Washington, defense like LA. Maybe we should focus less on size and focus more on the player's abilities and how much dog they have in them. -

If Hughes drops to 10 it’s cause he plans on staying in College until free agency where he leaves us to team up with the Golden State Warriors. Hard pass tbh. -
[Proposal] Buffalo/Vancouver

Did you see what they traded for Montour? Lol. -
Is exactly my point, he can't stay healthy now we expect him to stay healthy on a 7 year deal. LOL. Hullo? Am I taking crazy pills? Are you even reading my messages or just nitpicking it and taking things outta context? You're making it sound like I am calling him trash, I am saying I don't trust his health enough to give him 11 mil over 7 years. He's at best average defensively and at worst a complete liability. He looked awful in the St Louis series. If you feel differently, by all means but I would not stick him with Hughes. I'd put him with Edler. He takes the offensive workload off Edler and Edler can let Karlsson just focus on offense. Whatever guy, you think he's god's gift to defense and I think he's got too many injuries to sustain his play over a 7 year contract. We can just leave it at that.
-
Did you watch the St Louis series? Lol. I bet you didn't. You're still riding the high of a playoff run from 3 seasons ago. He's slowing down, he'll continue to slow down. I watched that St Louis series and nothing about it made me believe this guy can be the same guy he was 3 seasons ago. Also, I never said he sucks on defense but there is a legit reason Ottawa ran Methot with him and there was a reason that was a huge loss for Ottawa when he was taken. But hey, keep drinking the 2016/17 kool aid.
-
True, 2 years ago. 2 years of wear and tear on his already busted ankle including a couple lengthy playoff runs one of which showed clear signs his skating is starting to fade. Where will he be in 2 more years? A better partner for Hughes? Stralman would be a better partner for Hughes than Karlsson, hell a healthy Tanev would be better if that were ever a thing. They know what the defensive side of the ice looks like. There was a reason Karlsson and Methot worked so well together. It wasn't cause Methot was such a dynamic offensive threat.

Will never get the respect they deserve. BC Hall of Fame today, Hockey Hall of Fame tomorrow. They changed the way hockey is played in the NHL. That's not hyperbole, that's just fact. My Canuck/hockey fandom started thanks to the West Coast express but these two were special beyond just hockey. Last year felt off for me as a fan. Watching the Canucks and not seeing the Sedins felt wrong to an extent. They've always been on this team in the time I been a hardcore fan. I just wish they could have won the Stanley Cup. They deserved it.

[Proposal] Drop in the draft
JeremyCuddles replied to 5nothincanucksohno's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Our prospect pool has decent depth, but we lack top end talent. I'd rather just keep the 10. Unless Seider is Benning's guy. Trading down in that case isn't a terrible idea. It really depends on how Benning views the guys around 10 and whether or not Seider is even around at 19. Seems a bit too far down for him to still be around. Big guy, right handed, had a great Worlds showing. Rather just take the guy at 10. Too much risk involved moving down almost 10 spots for an additional 2nd rounder and risk losing the guy we (Benning and his scouting crew) want. -

Every d-man 6'0 and under is a bustarino for Alf. Probably knows next to nothing about Soderstrom other than his height, but that's all he really needs to make his judgement. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
JeremyCuddles replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Euros/Russians can play in the AHL right outta their draft year, I think. That may just be a misconception from playing NHL games. Lol. I think it's only the CHL drafted players that have to go back to Junior. I think smaller ice surface is a bit overrated as well. Petey adjusted very quickly to the smaller ice. His trouble is the same with all kids, the 82 game schedule can be brutal. Asking 17 year old kids to flip their lives upside down is a lot to ask especially when there is no real downside to developing and maturing at home. We see star level talent develop in their own leagues and transition to the NHL all the time. Boeser, Hughes, Petey all had no trouble not developing in the AHL and College is not a superior league to SHL or KHL. Personally I think the competition of KHL is better than the AHL too. So other than ice surface the downside to KHL does not outweigh the positives to him just being comfortable at home against comparable talent to that of the AHL. At least in my opinion.
