2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
JeremyCuddles replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Two top 10 picks would be great to fill a top 6 forward role and a top 4 d-man role. If we can snag Podkolzin, Krebs, or Boldy with the 8th means taking a d-man with the 10th will feel less risky. Broberg or Soderstrom at 10 and all of a sudden the look of our future core looks really nice. Really depends on what it'd cost us. Losing a Boeser for the 8th would be lateral at best. Since we are essentially hoping whomever we draft top 10 becomes as effective as Boeser. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

Jake was drafted like 5 drafts ago, a few more than a few drafts ago. Nice try though. Soderstrom is 5'11 now, probably closer to 6 foot isn't short by any means especially since he plays bigger than he is. Besides, we can find big shutdown bodies in free agency or in later rounds of the draft. Finding offensive players generally comes in the top end of the draft. Soderstrom as of now has higher offensive upside. He has the same amount of points as Broberg while playing in a superior league than Broberg. The only thing Broberg has a significant edge on Soderstrom is weight and height. Everything else is either close to being equal or Soderstrom has the advantage. Being right handed also plays into Soderstrom's value since we could see a LD group of Hughes, Juolevi, Tryamkin, Hutton, Brisebois, and Sautner. Could even throw in Rathbone's name into that mix. On the right side we have Woo, Stecher, Tanev, as the only real notable names Chatfield and Brassard are rightites but they are long shots to even be top 6 d-men let alone occupying a top 4 spot. Tanev is made of glass, Stecher in my opinion is a great 3rd pairing guy that can play top 4 for short periods. Woo is a 2nd rounder we are hoping can develop into a top 4. So as it stands now with what we know about Broberg and Soderstrom I'd definitely give the edge to Soderstrom as a better prospect and fit. I'd be happy with either of them but Soderstrom is the guy I'd vote for. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

Dumb to base your reason on that. These are kids, 17 and 18 years old. They'll likely need 2 years of development in all likelihood anyway. Juolevi was a top 10 pick and hasn't played a single NHL game. If GMs, with far more resources and knowledge than myself, are as impatient as me a fan than they probably shouldn't have their jobs. -
Cause that only happens in video games? Why would a player want to sign here when we are signing guys just to trade them right after? Lol.
-
Gaunce does imo. Rumor has it other teams called about Gaunce at the deadline.
-
Byram dropping to 10 is about as likely as Lebron James asking for a trade to Vancouver and only Vancouver. But hey, if it happens praise the sun.

Gaunce looked miles better than Schaller. Kind of a shame if Gaunce doesn't return.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

When throwing other names in the hat for sure I'd rather have someone else. But when it comes to Button's mock draft it loses some value having Kaliyev over Podkolzin. The talent level I don't think is that different, definitely not different enough to rank Kaliyev over Podkolzin when you include the intangibles Podkolzin brings. But hey, clearly he and I differ in what we value in a player so I guess I shouldn't poo-poo his list. I could be very wrong about this draft in a few years. I was very wrong about past drafts. Lol. -

Two way guys with high compete level succeed in the NHL more often than guys with just raw talent anyway. Otherwise we'd talk more positively about Goldy or Shinkaruk. But maybe I am wrong. -

He has Kaliyev over Podkolzin, says all it needs to about Button's assessment of Russians. CDC will love his opinion though. -

Yeah I get it, it's definitely something to take notice of. He is scoring at the same rate in the SHL that Broberg is in a lesser league. All while being considered good defensively and being a good competitor. Doesn't shy away from the physical side of hockey either. For me it's Soderstrom > Broberg. Part of it is I also know what it's like to really like the size and speed of a player at the draft, that's what I loved about Jake's game pre-draft. -
Feels like a borderline lateral move to me. We are losing 45ish goals in JV and Boeser and getting 30 in Huberdeau. He's great, don't get me wrong. He's an upgrade on Boeser but we will still have the problem of needing a top 6 winger and now we need a middle 6 forward that can give us 10-15 goals. So we lose depth but improve our top 6 slightly. But overall doesn't bolster this team much more than it was last season. This may be a poop deal, but a package including the 10th overall and JV for Huberdeau may make more sense for Florida. Florida doesn't have to worry about adding more cap in Boeser, but can draft a forward potentially on the level of a Boeser, this way they can still target Panarin and Bob in the offseason. Two top 15 picks could overhaul their defense or forwards or help both if they take one D-man and one forward. Not sure what we would have to add to that package for them to bite though.

A somewhat disappointing season for Jake, for me anyway. I still have/had high hopes for the guy. When he said he was working on his hands last summer I thought for sure this was the season he takes a major step towards being a top 6 forward. He's a good depth option on that 3rd line though. 15 goals from someone outside the top 6 is pretty valuable. But I believed he could have done more. He's still just 22 though, 23 in August. I still believe he could be a top 6 forward but he NEEDS to become better with the puck. Not just at controlling it but making smarter decisions with it. His defense has come a long way so he is capable of improving areas of his game. People saying they'd trade him for a 2nd or 3rd rounder don't realize the players you draft in those rounds you are hoping become as useful as Jake, so why make the trade? Because Jake didn't become an elite player? Doesn't make sense to make a trade for a guy you hope is half as good as Jake in 4-5 years. That 2nd rounder is statistically more likely to bust than to be better than Jake.

Probably cause Petey isn't a defenseman. -
Malkin is too old and the value just isn't there for Florida. And Florida wants to shed cap to bring in Panarin and Bob. This does next to nothing for their cap situation. We could offer more for just Huberdeau. Let alone throwing in the 13th overall pick. I love Malkin, but his value is not what it was 2-4 years ago.

[Proposal] VAN - DAL - EDM three way
JeremyCuddles replied to a topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I could see Nichushkin dropping at least 7 goals and 20 assists if he gets spoonfed time with Petey like Goldy got in parts of the season. For real though, Nichushkin was mishandled. He had 46% ozone starts. For reference Pettersson and Boeser both had 70% ozone starts. Man had 70 hits in 57 games. I'd take a flier on him if there was an opportunity. Wouldn't give up anything major though. If they want Biega, Goldy or something low value for him. Screw it I am game. I defended Pouliot for two years hoping to see something. I can definitely give Nichushkin one. Lol. -
[TRADE] Jet Woo traded to Calgary Hitmen
JeremyCuddles replied to Gator's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He's not eligible for Utica, otherwise the Hitmen would not have traded for him. -
Depends on how far down you propose he trades. I'd say there is a drop off in talent after about 10-12. Will there be steals in the later parts of the first, of course. But I don't think it'd be wise to gamble on the "if" at this point of the rebuild, or really any point of the rebuild. Draft at 10, take the best guy we possibly can. Would rather draft 10 with the best odds of getting an impact player rather than trade down and potentially draft a Gaunce or a Jensen and then get an additional 2nd rounder that may be a decent middle/bottom 6 player or a 3rd pairing d-man. And that's an optimistic expectation for a 2nd rounder.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
JeremyCuddles replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
All those guys you mentioned could very easily slide into a top line role. And lets be real, Soderstrom and Broberg could very easily be 4/5 d-men which is the equivalent of a 2nd line forward. You make it sound like getting top 6 player, even if a 2nd liner, is a bad thing with the number 10 pick. We should count that as a win if any of these players can play top 4 defense or top 6 forward.
