  1. So I just got a bill from a collection agency stating I owe them $110.  It was from Telus, apparently I owed them $20 from a old bill in 2012 and instead of sending me any statement since then I now have to pay $85+ in interest.  Such BS, and I take it there is nothing I can do?

its been way too long for them to actually be able to collect on that, the statue of limitations is 2 years in BC. A legitimate credit agency might try to put something on your record so its up to you to decide what to do, but I'd try getting a copy of the bill from Telus first before doing anything. They should be able to provide you with billing records for whatever phone number or address you were using at the time to confirm that the debt is legitimate, it may not be.

Here's some info that might help:

They probably purchased the file from Telus at a significant discount. Anything they can get from you will be good. I would think you could settle for 50%. Start the negotiation at the amount of the Telus bill.
