Horvat did very well in his fight with Nurse. I'd give Horvat an edge in that one. Proud of him and the terrific season he's had, hitting the 20 goal mark and making great strides in his development and taking on a leadership role as well. Unquestionable MVP this season. Congratulations Bo.

At this point I'd be ecstatic if we could get a slightly upgraded Steve Pinizzotto out of him for the 4th line (minus the fighter role) who can stick in the line-up and the NHL. lol

Yeah I heard about those issues with fitness, conditioning, diet, maturing etc.. I'd just like to hear some details related specifically to his actual playing. Obviously being overweight would affect speed and skating but what else? Is it just his overall game or are there some outstanding things?

Does anyone know what specific issues Virtanen had, that he got sent down to Utica for? What aspects of his game does he need to work on? I'm hoping its the defensive side of his game, which would explain why we're seeing so little offensive production from him.

I thought the Eriksson signing was a good one at the time, and that he would be great with the Sedins. Boy was I wrong. With the way he has been playing and the high salary/long term contract with NTC he has, its one thing that really stands out in my list of worries about the team. He's gonna be a real liability if this is all he can bring to the team. Eating up a lot of cap and leaving a big deficit in production that has to be compensated for somehow. Hopefully a trade can be done.

The Canucks aren't necessarily giving him something that he couldn't otherwise get, but to think of it as flat out "nothing" is wrong. The Canucks are showing confidence in him, that they value him as a player, and are giving him the opportunity to be a key part of their organization going forward in their rebuilding phase. They are making an investment in him. There is a lot involved in it. All I'm saying is that is that its something to be appreciated. Its not something you should think of as "nothing", like who cares? I can get this from anyone. They would be lining up to get me". That is not the right attitude. Would you want a player with that kind of character on your team?

If its one thing I cant stand its a prospect/player with a self important, prima donna attitude like he thinks he's too good and can do better. Instead of being grateful for the opportunity to play for an NHL team like he should be, he wants to explore his options. I don't know if this is he case with Demko, (his actions give that impression) or if he just wants to finish his education of whatever, but if it is the case, then he should make it clear right now and not keep people waiting and wondering what is going on or if he's interested or not. No one wants a player with a self centered attitude like that on the team. If you aren't interested in being here, then get lost.

You look a bit like Val Kilmer in that pic. lol

How the hell is Boeser a "computer guy"? He's a natural goal scorer with great instincts and the ability to make, read and finish plays.

I'm so jealous that Toronto got Nylander. lol

This guy looks like a really good pick, I'm really intrigued by him. Benning said he has a very high hockey IQ and is very competitive and that they have been watching him all year prior to the draft. I like how Benning is looking for hockey sense and character in players, that's exactly what we need. Good work in uncovering a gem like this. The future looks bright.

How many more games to go until his stint is over? When should we expect him back?
-
Yay Burrows is back. Never doubted it for a second. lol.

I agree that Horvat is NHL ready. He's got the size, strength, he's worked with a speed skating coach over the summer and his skating has really improved, he's trimmed down a bit and moves quicker, and he's got the defensive side of his game mastered. The offensive skill is there and it will come when he gets more comfortable playing at the NHL pace. I see him slotting into a 4th line center role very nicely. Some might think he isn't an upgrade over the other options for his position but he actually is because he's got great offensive potential. And you want to start the process of getting prospects into the line-up so we can infuse the roster with more youth. There has been very little of that on the Canucks in recent times and its high time for it.

Shinkaruk, Vey and Horvat all deserve a spot. The team will be better by leaps and bounds if they do, mark my words. Get Hansen the hell off the team already. He is a waste of a spot that could go to one of those far more talented prospects.
-
What about Shinkaruk vs Nylander? How does Shinkaruk compare to Nylander in terms of offensive talent? If not, do we have any prospects who are as good or close to Nylander in that way?

[Draft] VAN selects Jake Virtanen 6th Overall
amitriptyline replied to Strombone1's topic in Canucks Talk
I was a bit surprised we got him after all that talk about moving up in the draft, but I'm very pleased. He's gonna be a highly valuable addition to the team. I read that Burke was very impressed with Virtanen as well and was even thinking of moving down to get him. That says a lot. I'd like to see Virtanen paired with Horvat and Gaunce with Fox. -

[Confirmed] Willie Desjardin: VAN Head Coach

Its interesting to note that Desjardins worked as an associate coach in the NHL for 2 years I think it was, and he could have stayed on but he preferred to go back to the minors because he wanted to be a head coach. So its not like he's been in the minors all his life because he wasn't good enough to get a shot in the NHL. I think he's gonna turn out to be good for the Canucks. -

Good choice for a new coach. I like how Desjardins focuses a lot on giving individualized attention to the players, and takes his time in an unrushed manner, to sit down and talk with each one if they are having problems. That's definitely the right approach if you want to get the most out of people and bring out their best. He's described as intense, but with a cool, level headed disposition. That's what we need. We don't need some guy yelling, swearing and barking orders like an army sergeant lol. To be honest, I do have some reservations about a guy who's never coached at the NHL level, but I don't necessarily think its gonna be a Dallas Eakins type of thing. Desjardins is 57 and has a lot of experience coaching successfully and he should be ready to take it to the next level at this point in his career. He was the first choice for the Penguins too apparently. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. He has the right temperament and a lot of good personal qualities as a coach and that matters a lot. Plus he plays the up tempo style of play that the Canucks management want to get back too, which is great. I have a positive feeling about it. -
He's nothing but a waste of valuable cap space. Better to use it to acquire someone who can put up some points that are proportionate to their salary and contribute something to the team.

Excellent news. We're finally rid of this goofball, crossbow hunting, bear/goat killing, injury prone, weirdo, Jesus freak.
