Bang on! At the very least it's a classic example of the media misquoting someone out of context. Admiration for a player and a nod on captaincy are two completely different things.
-
Lol ... captaincy by participation.
-
I actually agree with you on this, and it has nothing to do with how I feel about Bo being captain or him as a leader. He was being hailed as the next captain from the first season when he was the only young player representing the future. He was here nearly three full seasons before the real youth movement started to arrive. Labeling him the heir apparent so early really left no room for another potential captain to emerge. That is unfair to the overall process of allowing the captain to emerge organically and give other players/leaders a fair shake. I think Bo would make a great captain. I also think Pettersson would make a great captain. Who knows, Hughes could be also be C material along with others who aren't here yet. I get what you're saying. And that's not to say Horvat shouldn't be C.

Question- Signing Precedent
Dr. Crossbar replied to Howisthishappening's topic in General Hockey Discussion
The way I see it, you're thinking too much with your emotions. You've got three things here that each have unique dynamics and shouldn't be lumped together. 1. If a team overpays their RFA, it doesn't mean other RFAs and agents HAVE a case. But because of what the market bears in an overpayment and sets a new ceiling, other RFAs and agents CAN make a case. There's a difference. And depending on the RFA, others may have better cases to make. 2. The players aren't robbing anyone. They have a right to negotiate what the market will bear and what they believe is fair value. It's business, not personal. It is absolutely okay for a player to make comparisons (copy) and try to get as much money as possible. The consequences of that may have a negative impact but that's on the player. If a team is willing to overpay, that's on the team and they need to own the consequences good or bad. Depending on the circumstances, it may not make it morally right, fans may not like it, it may not be good for the game, but it is okay to use other RFAs to make a case. Also, when you use words like "make it okay" and "they will be hated" or "develop a bad reputation" ... those are rooted in personal emotions. 3. Some players hold their pride and reputation above money, others are more motivated by money. It's just human nature. Some players want to maximize their window of opportunity to make as much money as possible while others are more flexible. The Keller signing has some impact but that also depends on individual situations and dynamics. Some GMs may shrug it off while others may feel a greater impact. It depends. I see what you're getting at and agree with an underlying principle or moral theme you're trying to convey, but there's so much more to the reality of it all. -
Agree. It's hard to see where his ceiling will be in the next few years. Once he puts it all together, and fills out as a man, his all-around game is going to be awesome to watch. His backchecking is already incredible. Will be interesting this season to see how the added size helps his game. The recent pic looks like it's the right amount in his upper body.

The fact that deep fakes are entertaining is enough for people to overlook how dangerous this really is. As long as they're buzzed on the entertainment value, people don't care. Just look at social media and how easily and the speed at which people were willing to part with their privacy in order to be validated. People should be angry about this ... really angry. But look, it's so cool. Isn't it cool what they can do. Just like Tech Geeks have been saying for 20 years and walking us all off a cliff without any restraint.

Says a lot about him and his character. Not surprising that Benning hasn't given up on him. -
I never thought Benning was in the league when Pro Set cards came out and played in these uniforms.

[Article] Sutter is not a shutdown centre
Dr. Crossbar replied to Ossi Vaananen's topic in Canucks Talk
The better the Canucks get, the more desperate and grasping the media will become to be negative. This story is like that Markstrom vs. Koskinen contract article a few weeks ago. Just watch ... as we get better how much more wild and bizarre the media will get to find negativity with the Canucks. -

Like how you put this. Feel the same way. I also liked that recent Russian interview he did. Kid has good awareness, ethic, and approach to his game. Opportunity is all his for the taking. -

Excellent, excellent to hear! People are going on and on about the whole 2-way player thing - which was an issue - but JB just addressed the real need. Goldy needs to put the puck in the net more often and not miss oppirtunities. Last season he missed and whiffed on a lot of scoring chances. I remember him missing at least two open net chances he should have buried. Now Green needs to put him in the best situation to meet those expectations. -
Well, it's interesting how the initial question is framed - Does Media Take Stupid Pills? This is a great opportunity to look at it from a different angle. The question is rooted in an assumption that on average the media is not stupid and therefore must take a pill to become stupid. I see this type of thing all the time on social media with responses like, "OMG, news outlets are becoming so biased and one sided!" Or things like, "Wow, society is becoming so divided!" I always feel like asking people, "If things are still in the "becoming" stage, how would you know when things ARE that way? What does THAT look like?" The reality is ... things ARE that way now and well past becoming! Apply that to the media and ...

Have you ever been betrayed? Tell us about it.
Dr. Crossbar replied to DarthMelvin's topic in Off-Topic General
A few years ago I got caught in the middle of a really dysfunctional family dispute between certain family members. I've always been the family member to never takes sides. I get along with everyone, value that, and work to preserve relationships from a neutral place. Without getting into specifics, the family dispute forced me into taking a side for the first time in my life. What I learned is that the key issue was orchestrated months earlier to cause maximum hurt and devastation to someone close to me, which I'd be left picking up the pieces. Prior to the dispute, I laid out the consequences, pleaded with this person for an entire week to not devistate the family, to not do irreparable damage and harm to the family. There were other options and choices. Still, despite all of my efforts, this person chose to tear the family apart. In doing so, it exposed the raw truth of certain family loyalties, the illusion of relationships, and that I was only seen as collateral damage to someone's simmering and seething anger for another family member. My relationship, and love, was being sacrificed to hurt another person I loved. Non family members were leveraged against family with false love like pieces on a chessboard and played by one person. There was nothing I could say to anyone without me looking like I was the villain and the one causing the dispute. It was crazy! That was the worst part, but there was no way I was falling for that trap. I realized that given the opportinity, this family member would choose hate, hurt, and destroy the family. Even when presented with options for a positive outcome for everyone. Even after years of working to make certain family dynamics the best they could ever be. It devistated me. Basically, I was forced to confront that certain relationships in my family were nothing more than an illusion. Everything I believed my entire life wasn't true. The loving relationships I thought I had with certain people were all just talk and a facade. I can hardly put into words the level of betrayal I felt at my core. That year I could barely function. I walked around like a zombie. I analysed the issue every which way possible to not believe what I now knew to be true. I cut off all contact with that side of my family for two years while I tried to find peace and make sense of it all. The funny thing is, the silence ate at them. They repeatedly tried to blame me for tearing apart the family when it was their doing and their choice alone. They continually lashed out. I went through every emotion imaginable and every stage of grief possible. The level of betrayal was killing me inside. I needed to do something. That's when I shifted my energy and focus into studying personality disorders. The behavior just wasn't "normal" and there had to be an explanation. I committed to finally, once and for all, putting a face to a name of crazy making behavior I saw my entire life. After a full year of studying personality disorders, I learned a lot about my family and things that never made sense to me. I also learned a lot about myself having grown up in a family with disordered individuals. It began a process with myself to let go of things I could never figure out. The more I understood about certain personality disorders, the more it set me free internally. Ultimately, anger and hurt transformed into empathy for family members who seemingly didn't have the capacity for empathy. I knew that because of who they are, I would never get an apology. They would never reach out to me and take responsibility. They would only double down on their anger. So, by harbouring any anger or negativity in my life, I was only hurting myself. I eventually realized that I had the power of forgiveness. They didn't. I only had my actions. The act of forgiveness was really easy once I was ready. It took the negativity and hurt away instantly when I chose to do so. So, after two years of silence and pain, I decided to travel back to my family for the sole purpose of telling each person I loved them. They could react to that information any way they wanted - anger, hate, ego, whatever - but it wouldn't change my love for them. And if they questioned the sincereity of that love, well, all I had were my actions. I was there. I understood that because of who they are, they actually needed me to set them free. That was my role. They needed me to start the process of healing because they couldn't. -
Should canucks hire a english/russian speaking assistant coach ?

Isn't this entire thread common sense in terms of foreign language players needing help when they come to the NHL? I mean, there's responsibility on both sides, team and player. -

What are you most excited about for the upcoming season?
Dr. Crossbar replied to cuporbust's topic in Canucks Talk
Like others have said, I'm excited for the season to start. I feel this is the beginning of our window to the new era. We finally have a legit opportunity of competing for a playoff spot. I'm also really excited to see which prospects take the next step forward. Really excited to see Hughes. I think a lot of people are underestimating the impact he's going have. We're going to see things from him that we've never seen on our blueline before. With Miller and Ferland added to the roster, I'm also excited for Roussel to get back into the lineup. He'll provide even more pushback and energy mid-season. So much to be excited about!
