I have put some thought into this and I can tell you my personal feeling; I dont think Reinhart is any better than Dal Colle or Bennett. I think he is slightly better than Ehlers and Nylander. I think he is a little better than Ritchie and Drasaitl . I part with our second round pick plus the sixth (6, 36) for him at #2. Thats all. Its not scientific. Its a gut reaction to watching him play as opposed to watching the others in the top 8. I dont see anything special in comparison.

Kass is an excellent playmaker in his own right. I dont play him with Nylander. I push Nylander to another line.

[Nick Ritchie] Junior Point totals vs Getzlaf, Lucic, and Nash
Absent Canuck replied to Merci's topic in Canucks Talk
Ok you painted quite a twisted scenario to fit the narrative you want to achieve. I highly doubt Bennings 'ass' is on the line regardless of who he drafts unless its e Jankowski part deux. Before you write off Nylander , lets see how the combine turns out. If he really is a prima donna, then we wont pick him I am pretty sure. Ehlers is no prima donna. He was just named the CHL rookie of the year. As in all three leagues, WHL OHL and QMJHL . Its a tough sell to water down the guy. He just scored 49 goals in 63 games. 104 points . Had a great playoff to boot. I am happy with all three at this point but again, lets see what Ehlers size looks like and Nylanders attitude at the combine. -

Ok this is a good list. I cut it down to the last 10 years for convenience sake. I also like to look at the league post lockout because of many rule changes including the salary cap. 2004 Smid -Solid defender #2 pairing , with a calm demeanor. Large but lanky frame. 2005 Lee - 6ft 3 two way defender who was also a gifted skater. 2006 Sheppard. Touted as an aggressive power forward with a scoring touch. 6ft1 205 raked up 33 goals in the Q . 2007 Logan Couture - Once held the ISS top ranking for north american player, he was touted as an elite talent with no major weaknesses 2008 Bailey. -touted as a strong two way forward with size, grit and a scoring touch. He needed to improve his skating. 2009 Jared Cowen -potential franchise D. Huge frame with good positioning and some offensive upside. 2010 Granlund -touted as an all purpose skill center, Granlund excells in all areas of the ice despite his small stature. 2011 Dougie Hamilton -franchise defenseman with huge size and skill advantages. (Should have gone higher in my opinion). 2012 Jacob Trouba - a franchise puck moving defenseman with leadership skill. No real weakness. How does Horvat stack up to that? I will let you be the judge.

I agree they dont get the love they deserve. If i had my way there would be an american division in the 'CHL'. Perhaps 2.

Me too but I dont think it will change much. This draft is probably as convoluted or even more so than the 2012 draft. We probably will see Ekbland or Reinhart go 1st overall. After that.............

Every single guy has since the LOCK OUT when some fundamental rules changed. Did you forget that part of my post? Then you cite Daigle from 20 years ago? You are like that other guy. When the argument isnt favoring your agenda............simply change the ground rules of the argument. Edit:Spinning negative hyperbole does not = legitimate question marks around him.

. You are changing the words to suggest something completely different. I dont claim to know the motives for the Ehlers supporters. I dont condone the ones who put the others down either. Why did you just 'assume' I have a double standard? Do you go around using double standards so you think I would? Ehlers isnt 'small' by any standard at all. At age 17 years old when he got off the plane from Denmark he was 5ft 11 and 162 pounds. He aint 5ft 8 or 5ft 5 or Martin St Louis size. He just isnt. He is just a kid. Some guys dont fill out right away. He is now almost the exact same size as Nathan Mac Kinnon. Go show me your posts where you call Mac Kinnon small then we will talk. Ehlers is 5ft 11.75 and he is 176 pounds. He just turned 18 years old. He is a kid. You claim it 'optimistic' he grows a lousy 1/4 inch and gains 14 to 19 pounds when he fills out as a grown man? Those are fairly modest expectations. Nobody is 'diminishing' Ritchies talent . He is not as talented as Nylander nor Ehlers. Ehlers is perhaps the most dynamic player in the whole draft. Ritchie put up solid numbers but they are not Ehlers numbers. Please dont tell me you think anyone is diminishing Virtanens talent. He isnt a good a prospect as Ritchie is let alone Ehlers and Nylander. He scored 45 goals -in 71 games but showed little else. His speed is great and hitting is good. He had a disappointing playoff. Fair minded people disagree with me all the time. I can tell you -with no offense intended - none come to rip apart my posts , twist my words, and give me a what for. Fair minded people feel that approach would be unproductive. Fair minded people are just that. Fair minded. They dont need to rip apart the other posters, the other prospects . If you like Ritchie or Virtanen then good for you. They are great prospects. Calling Ehlers 'small' is simply disingenuous. If you want to say hes 'not big' and 'not physical, then that is fair game, but all we do is come back with a long laundry list of players his size who play just fine in the NHL. Yes, including the Western Conference. As for your last point. We shall see. Perhaps Ehlers wont want to play at 195. Maybe 190 is good .

WcF: Chicago Blackhawks vs Los Angeles Kings
Absent Canuck replied to Apples's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I dont believe in playing 'captain hindsight' . I forgot to vote in the poll. I thought the Hawks would have this in 6 games. There are many reasons why. Chiefly because they should be emotionally and physically drained by now. They clearly arent. Looks like i was wrong. -
Hes waiving his NMC? Source?

I agree. I dont get all the love for these other Duck prospects. Here is the one spot where I feel the mock draft guys are fairly accurate at how the players actually turn out. http://www.mynhldraft.com/2010-NHL-Mock-Draft/ They have Etem at #12 . What I have seen of the guy so far is he is doing well at the AHL level . I take him over Theordore or any of the ones avail. I take Etem , 10th and their first in 2015 all day for Kesler.
-
if we pick Ritchie, then we would have true power forwards on 2 lines. Shinkaruk would be the only true elite talent we would have as the Sedins slide down to 2nd liners and eventually role players. This is why I pray we pick Ehlers and Ritchie. This team sorely lacks high end elite skill for prospects.
-
Those are posters who have a conflict of interest to pick another prospect and they dont care how ridiculous their slander of Ehlers is to achieve it. Fair minded people see Ehlers at 6ft and anywhere from 190 to 195 pounds at age 21. That is a fairly reasonable estimate. He is already 5ft11 1/2 -3/4 and 176 pounds at age 18 The average player is 6ft1 and 201 pounds. I assume that means the average forward is 6ft 190

Lets try a far more realistic one GM - we want to move in another direction, will you provide a list of team? Player; I am sorry to hear that. I dont really want to leave. Lets try to work it out. GM ; ok but are trying to rebuild. Its nothing personal against you. We arent going to be contending anytime soon. Player ; Thats ok. I like it here. I can ride it out. GM ; you may never have a chance to win the cup. If you let us move you , we can put you in a much better situation to win. Player I understand , but my wife /kids love it here. I dont want to go. GM : Ok. I will try to make it work. If not, I would ask you to change your mind. The only other option is waivers, which means we get nothing for you, and you end up in some hell pit. That is a 'lose/lose scenario for both of us. Player: Yes. That would suck. Lets see how it goes and play it by ear. Talk again in 6 months. GM; Ok.

I hope this isnt one of your gems of wisdom. Didn't quite pan out for you.
-
Using straight conjecture, it appears to me that Linden in particular doesnt expect Ehlers to still be in the draft at #6.
-
This is a solid argument, but in my opinion its one you have when drafting 13th to 15 and Virtanen is still on the board. Not 6th overall. There are better prospects at that draft slot.
-
Ok something happened to how you posted this but its happened to me on occasion as well. : :D Of course we draft for the best all around player at our #6 position. It becomes highly subjective what that means when we set parameters on what that means. How important is size in todays NHL? How important is skill? In my opinion the NHL is getting faster, less physical play that demands size . There are still lots of hits, but its by all players not just huge forwards. There is a noticeable trend away from fighting and trying to rattle someones teeth with a hit. It increasingly gets you a suspension if your timing is off even in the slightest , or a riot even when its perfectly legal. So to me speed is the first key. Skating is the #1 most important skill. If you can skate, you have a job in the league. Even Mason Raymond can score 20 goals in the league because of his speed. Without it, I doubt he can make a living in the AHL . The second most important asset is a players skill. If you have speed and skill, now you create opportunities, draw penalties and force your opponents out of their game plan. Speed and skill are a rare combination. If you have these two assets you will survive in the NHL. So if you have speed and skill, then your hockey IQ becomes important. David Booth has speed and skill, but is dumber than a sack of hammers outside of his comfort zone of rushing the puck up the ice and jamming the net. He still has a job in the NHL and can still score some goals but if you also combine a high hockey IQ with it, now you are talking about a high end draft choice. If you have speed, skill, high hockey sense, and now SIZE to offer, you are no doubt a top 5 draft choice. The cream of the crop. You can score, defend, skate , shield the puck, and muck in the corners. With size you are harder to knock off the puck , and are harder to intimidate. So, when we look at this we have ........ Reinhart Bennett Dal Colle Daisaitl Nylander Ehlers All of these players have the main ingredients to be all stars. None of them are the perfect package. Who is the best out of these elite players? When we get to Ritchie and Virtanen, we start to downgrade away from franchise to potential 1st line guys. These players trade off skill and rely on size. If your opinion that speed and skill is taking over the game, then you also opinion that their size is a secondary asset which decreases their value. I dont know anyone who honestly believes someone size is a main factor in their success as a forward anymore. Its a bonus.
-
Personal attacks. The cornerstone of any winning argument. Well done. Personal attacking Ehlers and Nylander size using negative hyperbole to make other choices look better. 6ft 176 pounds is a 'smurf' now ? This line of reasoning is so convincing !! You can state your opinion . That is fine. Passing off your diatribe of snide as objective insight into the prospects has no value.

I believe that the 'core' Benning and Linden are referring to are the Sedin Twins. Outside of that, I believe every other player over the age of 27 is up for grabs if the deal presents itself. As for the draft, I am parrotting the same thing I have been for a few weeks now.Its Ritchie , Nylander or Ehlers. If its Ritchie, then I hope he shaves some weight and works on his mental focus. I believe his inconsistent play is an exercise in keeping his head in the moment. I think he can learn from Zack Kassian . Issues with Zack were his inability to harness his nervous energy which can lead to bad penalties , suspensions and injury as he tries to do too much with his size. He has good size and an excellent shot. His reads are above nominal. He would be an excellent asset to use with Shinkaruk in the future, especially if Hunter can make a concerted effort to concentrate on center. I dont line up Ritchie and Kassian together. I put Kassian on the first line, Ritchie (eventually) on the second line, and Matthias on the third line. Great balance of size and and grit.
