Sooooo when you ramble on for forever, there are times where you even state that you are wrong in your deductions and yet you refuse to conclude as such... My thoughts on your argument can basically be summed up by this graphic:
-
Two questions.... One: How much cap space do we have right now? And two: How many more defensemen have we signed after the Schmidt deal? Answer those and maybe you might realize that you are being a little obtuse about this.
-
I don't know about you... but I was wanting Shinkaruk to of been able to play in our top 6 at the NHL level... haven't seen Hogz do that yet.
-
Yup, basically. The fact of the matter is that Stecher was not going to make us a cup contender. To build a Stanley Cup contender you need to trim the fat. Unfortunately, Stecher was part of that fat. It doesn't matter how cheap Stecher would of signed for as he isn't part of our 6 in the long run. Great guy, and efficient in certain areas of play, but won't miss him being shoved off the puck. The person who actually made Troy redundant on our roster is Quinn Hughes. If Steched can't effectively take a place on our penalty kill, then he doesn't have a spot on this team as he won't have a spot on the power play. Schmidt then steps in and becomes a piece of the potential contending roster as a result.

It sounds like you are focusing too much on last season, and not enough on what is coming down the road. We let players walk because of the term they wanted and what we have coming in from our young developing players - essentially making room for better players with cheaper contracts. Nate "Meatball" Schmidt is a huge piece moving forward. There is also a good chance that Rafferty will be an upgrade over Stecher. In a year or two, Podz will likely make the jump and fill in what we wanted from TT. We'll be better off. You'll see. I think GM JB is done handing out long contracts to players that aren't core to the team.

With all this talk about his development stagnating, felt the need to watch some highlights - because sometimes we need a reminder of the skill that this guy possesses:
-
I agree with this. I’ve never heard him say anything particularly insightful honestly. I actually assumed he had little to no following, but once I clicked on this vid, I was shocked to see he has so many followers. Weird.

It would be interesting to see an analysis, in order to confirm this supposed KHL bias, of whether their contract into the next season plays into how much ice-time they get. It seems to be what is exclaimed when minutes are reduced for no apparent reason, but it may just be because we are out of the loop with their actual progress. Not sure if anyone hear has seen enough of his play this year to say whether he has taken a step back in his play or not?

Looks like we found our next prospect to slag! Canuck fans love a good slagging! haha

Me? It is what GM JB has publicly stated in the past. If they aren’t better than the other players, why would we want them on the team? They need to earn a spot and outplay their competition. Can’t just hand rookies spots on the roster. Just like you can’t give roster spots because they have a multi year 3-mil+ contract. -

Exactly. And JB is well aware of this and overloads our roster prior to season start. See comment above. We don’t exactly have too many players because either (1) someone typically gets injured in pre-season and (2) JB has no problem waiving players. And to add... he also does this to build internal competition. I agree. It would be much better if we can bring in farm team players. So far JB has signed players to create a “competitive camp” because we haven’t had enough pressure from rookies. Looks like we may get both this upcoming season. -

Your point? People seem to think that “something has to give” because, IF healthy, we have an overloaded roster. Well, if people have been paying attention, JB does this pretty much every year and has no problem waiving those that don’t cut it even with significant salaries or term - see Baertchi and Gagner. -

Yes.... but those things did happen.... and we had all those players.... soooooo..... What we have seen GM JB do is carry a few extras at the beginning of the year, which you are allowed to do in pre-season*, until one of them eventually gets injured. If he is ok running with these guys, he won’t do anything until he’s forced to. -

We had all those players last year - minus Hawryluk, plus TT (and LTIR Leivo)... Not sure something has to give... but it would be nice to have some fresh energy in the top 9. Not so sure that Hawryluk is the guy to do that. -

I like Roussel. There I said it. -
[Speculation] Finnish sniper Laine on the board
HomeBrew replied to NHL'er's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Nope. He has had plenty of opportunities to let his one-timer rip since his rookie year and he has held back. Something is ailing him. With that said, he definitely needs to get quicker on his skates and raise his intensity level. -

Would rather have rookie year Boeser’s one timer. I surely hope he mends what ails him in order to bring that back. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby

Miller came in at the ripe age of 34 on the decline and put up three Markstrom-like level years with us. I would believe that Holtby could have a similar performance for us at 31 - a whole 4 months older than Markstrom. -
There are lots of great cities with outdoor opportunities - just look at Denver, hell even Calgary with Banff. On the multimillionaire level, if we are talking proximity to other places, then you have to also consider what is easily flown to as well. The Swiss Alps look a little more appealing flying to from New York than Vancouver... but yes Vancouver gives us common folk easy access to nature.

It is all going to come down to Training Camp. I like the competition that Benning creates every year at the get go. Rathbone could surprise and land a spot on the roster and we could see a defense lineup getting relative equal minutes (except for Hughes).

I do not believe the reference is towards cultural "diversity" within a city, which even then Vancouver is far behind compared to places like Toronto or New York, more so the activity and vibrancy of culture within the city itself. As someone who has lived in cities like Berlin, Vancouver is a snooze town on the international scale.

Yeah, I think it has something to do with justifying the cost of living in Van in peoples minds. It has a lot of great aspects don't get me wrong, particularly the environment surrounding the city (North Shore mountains, Whistler, etc.), but it does lack of ton of culture and urban vibrancy in the core that other cities offer imo.

[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli
HomeBrew replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Exactly. On top of that, we weren't able to move out some contracts because of the tight cap situation to make room. I would still do this move to make the push as it allowed to test out our team in the playoffs to see what we are working with - ie. being able to let Markstrom go and run with Demko.
