  1. I wouldn't call our reaction an allusion based on hindsight, it is more like pure frustration from over a decade of poor drafting. When we haven't drafted and developed a top 6 player since Ryan Kesler, with nearly a decade and half of drafting, until this year with Bo Horvat, I think we have been kind of on edge when it comes to our ability to do so. Every time we miss a pick, it will hurt when you have such a long gap between those that actually do work out for you. The only reason why we are in this mess that we are in today is because we were unable to draft and develop players that could take over top line duties. The Virtanen pick was crucial to getting our "retool/rebuild/transition" on the right foot, but we stumbled. Thankfully, I think that is about to change with Horvat, Boeser and others that have been acquired and those yet to be picked.
  2. Yeah thats the reality of the lottery for us. I've been calling it a rock-paper-scissors chance as to where we land (Top 3, 4th or 5th). It would be nice to have luck on our side for once though.
  3. I'd probably take a flyer on Ron Swanson. But I have my doubts about him being a team player.
  4. This is a new theory of mine, but I think we should draft the player that chews on their mouth guard the most. Those players always seem to have a high level of skill and do well in the NHL.
  5. Strong leadership calls for definitive choices. We don't need to be meek when it comes to making our draft choice. We should make it and stand by it. Hope for 1st overall. We would be a pretty sad franchise if we hope for #2 because we are worried about making the wrong choice.
  6. I am not seeing this anywhere, do you have a link? I would be surprised by some of these changes such as Own Tippett who on March 21st Button had pegged at 20 and Martin Necas falling from 3 despite an impressive playoff performance since then.
  7. Hit the post in Game 7, leading us to lose the game and riot in the streets. Banned for life. haha Tryamkin better not do that or he will be banned back to Russia.
  8. It was a pretty well orchestrated tank job in my opinion. We had highs and lows this season, but tanked intentionally at the absolute perfect time to get a guaranteed top 5 pick but also to see what potential we have in the young guys. We basically now have a rock-paper-scissors chance of getting a top 3 pick, 4th or 5th. Consensus Top 5 picks are basically as follows based on various scouting reports (source): 1. Nolan Patrick 2. Nico Hischier 3. Timothy Liljegren (average rank of 5.25) 4. Gabe Vilardi (average rank of 5.4) 5. Casey Mittelstadt (average rank of 5.75) Other notable players ranked at least once in the top 5: Martin Necas Cale Makar Owen Tippett Elias Petterson Michael Rasmussen Eeli Tolvanen Klim Kostin Basically for the Top 5 the picks between 3-5 are more or less of equal value according to consensus. I am personally perfectly happy to select any one of them and I think a case could be made to take Liljegren, Vilardi or Mittelstadt at 3. Even though Liljegren has lost a lot of hype as the year progressed, I think people have come around on him again and still hold him in high regard. Outside of the consensus Top 5, I am mostly intrigued by Martin Necas. One player that I hope falls out of the first round is Klim Kostin. He has been ranked as low as 30 and as high as 3rd - very high boom or bust prospect.
  9. It seems strange to hear those two things mentioned in the same sentence - Adam Foote and dynamic shooter. I don't think anyone back in the day would say that Adam Foote was known for his shooting, or are you just referring to his junior days? Adam Foote was known for his shutdown play more than anything and if you say that Cal has a better feel for that than his Dad, then he is going to be a real gem for a team in the future. If Cal can turn out to be anything like his Dad, I am all for trading for him regardless of his offensive potential. However, I do think we will be targeting high offensive potential prospects for the next drafts. People have said that Hutton's name is being thrown around, but I hope we trade one of Edler or Tanev before him. Hutton just found his new playing weight and I think he will put it all together next year.
  10. Sadly, a year ago he probably was our 4th best prospect.
  11. Have you even looked at GM JBs drafting record? That is exactly what he does. Go look up Rodrigo Abols, Brett McKenzie, Kyle Pettit and Mackenzie Stewart and let me know where they were drafted.
  12. I do not have faith that he will fill out and I don't think I have ever seen a guy in the NHL with a build as slender as Petterson. His height is also deceiving given that he has like 6 inches of neck. To me it doesn't look like "teenage growth skinny" either but a true Scandinavian skinny. It might be possible though, but I would still expect him to be thrown to the ice easily like what happens to Sutter all the time.
  13. I honestly think, the way that GM JB seems to talk about drafting players with strong character traits like Juolevi, I am sure Nico Hischier is his guy if given the chance. Nico exudes the kind of character traits that GM JB covets as discussed in this article: https://www.nhl.com/news/nico-hischier-staying-humble-before-nhl-draft/c-288485676 A large part of Hischier's success this season can be attributed to his attitude. He didn't leave his family and friends behind to be a passenger in Halifax. "I didn't have any expectations," Hischier said. "I just wanted to come over and have fun and improve as a hockey player." Named an alternate captain at the start of the season, Hischier had a positive influence on his younger teammates even though he was 17-years-old when he arrived in Halifax. "Having a player like Nico helps a lot, but having a person like Nico helps us even more," coach Andre Tourigny said. "From the way he prepares to the way he works to the way he practices he couldn't be a better role model for our guys. "It's happened often where I'll ask our younger players, 'Do you see what Nico is doing?' They have to follow his example." Russell said he made a calculated risk counting on Hischier to contribute immediately, but that risk has paid off. "He's one of the best people I've ever met," he said. Furthermore, he seems to have that complete game that the Canucks are trying to model: "My teammates help me a lot," he said when asked to evaluate his season. "I do everything for the team." That last line can be taken two different ways, because Hischier has indeed done everything this season for the Mooseheads, the youngest team in the QMJHL. And unlike him, Hischier's teammates have no problem pointing that out. "Nico is an incredible player," linemate Maxime Fortier said. "He does everything well. He is so strong offensively and defensively, with or without the puck. He's also very smart and you can see that on the ice." That might be Hischier's greatest asset. He is a strong skater who plays on the power play and the penalty kill, and is just as likely to score a highlight reel goal as he is to steal the puck from an opponent. "He plays a complete game, he's not one dimensional," Halifax general manager Cam Russell said. "He's got world-class skills, great hands, great vision, but he's also our best defensive player. When you have a player that is your most skilled and basically your best player on the team, and he's also your best defensive player, it provides great leadership for your younger players."
  14. if GM JB were to have free reign on making moves, although I do not think ownership allows it, the true question would come down too whether or not the other teams want to trade up, not whether we desire to trade down. If it was made so clear cut to our organization that the top picks are not worth that much more than 3-8, then what is their incentive to make that deal? They would have to REALLY want the player because either they suit their needs perfectly, or their owners are also in dire need to sell tickets. Of that entire list of hypotheticals you propose, I could only see NJ being a trade partner because they are in desperate need to create a new identity for their team. One of Nolan Patrick or Nico Hischier would do that for them, more so than a later pick. The other teams, in my opinion, already have high end forwards that are of better stature for team identity. With that said, there is a 65% chance that we end up with pick 4 or 5 and we just take the player that we want - similar to last year.
  15. Honestly, I was hoping for more of a rebuttal about why the Canucks would consider something like that. Not at all trying to shut down the conversation on it, just start a debate. But the wait game for the draft is true enough. Consider it "noted". I actually just want to pick up a solid player and get onto next years draft - where the real game changers are expected to be.
  16. Ahaha Alright bud. Sounds like a topic more suited for the proposal / armchair GM section honestly. Otherwise, what is the point of wasting room in this discussion on something that won't ever happen?
  17. Well this isn't NHL 17, so what he would do in that regard doesn't matter all that much. There is no chance that the Canucks trade down if they are awarded 1st overall. None.
  18. Just to clarify... IF the Vancouver Canucks win first overall for the first time in franchise history, 47 years of drafting, you honestly think the Canucks would even consider trading the pick?
  19. Yeah I saw that over simplification you posted about total team production numbers. Not very convincing and says little about the players themselves. Nico Hischier has more value as a playmaking centerman than Nikolai Ehlers did as a scoring winger and if they both reach their potential, Hischier will still be the more valuable player. Not once, from what I can gather, have you mentioned that this is also Hischier's first year on North American ice and how that factors into the equation. There is more to scouting than just relating point totals and I think there was far more question marks around Ehlers going into that draft than there is about Hischier. Ehlers himself might end up being a 70+ point player. If you put that into a center position with better playmaking ability and I would say you have yourself quite the foundational player.
  20. Why? Because you, along with your Benning quote, are referring to generational talent draft years - that is why. Everyone knows that it isn't a "strong draft," there isn't a McDavid, Matthews, or Laine this year and comparing it to those years will without a doubt result in it being a known as a "weak draft", a cheap knockoff known as the "Swiss McDavid Draft." But could a healthy Nolan Patrick, the WHL playoff MVP last year, put up similar numbers to Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin? I think it is possible. The analysis that you bring forward with Hischier vs Ehlers, seems thin to say the least. Maybe you could provide a more in-depth report and you might sound more convincing. It is easy to look at simple stats and numbers and say: same team, similar size, etc. etc. But they also different players, playing different years with different teammates, and have different skillsets, etc. etc.
  21. Wow, so you are comparing the previous two drafts that had generational talents to this one and concluding that the best players in this draft will be no better than 60 point players. Your analysis should really go no further than to state that the top end players of this draft are unlikely to be Top 15 scorers in the league. FYI, it is possible for franchise players to be only around the 60 point mark - Jonathon Toews.
  22. You might not of heard this before, but... I think you need to work on your English.
  23. Your kidding right? You don't get the hindsight part? I think you need to read it again buddy. He clearly states "If we are redoing that draft with Hindsight." If Button etc. were to do a draft comparison they would be doing it based on the year that the players were drafted, not some sort of time warp comparison FTG has going.
  24. LMAO! What kind of bizarre exercise are you trying to accomplish? Doing a 2014 redraft based on hindsight after a few years of players progressing into the pros and then placing an undrafted player within that mix? This makes no sense whatsoever.
  25. Yet, they kept the King Rat himself. That alone makes me think that it is more than just on ice antics. For what it is worth, Marchand does speak quite maturely about the game in interviews and realizes what things are for what they are.
