  1. You know, he mentions guys like Wacey Hamilton and Cater Bancks as guys that have taught him things about being a pro during his time down in Utica, but I can't help to think how much a guy like Mike Keane (when he played for the Moose) would useful to have down there mentoring players like Jake. That is one element that I think we are missing - a NHL Stanley Cup veteran to show the young guys the ropes. It would be really useful to have someone like that to give strong advice to kids like Jake that are going through some struggles to find their game. As much as people think that role has been taken up by Green, I think it is much more useful to have someone on the roster feeding that advice. Just think about what Burrows had done for players like Bo Horvat, feeding him advice between shifts, or even further back with Sundin and Kesler.
  2. I'm loving the ankle break on Lindholm!
  3. Look, if you are going to rave about how well Green has done with a limited lineup, you have to give the same amount, if not more, credit to WD coaching a team which is/was comprised of half of an aging stale core and half of AHLers and rookies. It is pretty difficult to determine what he can truly accomplish as a coach until he is given a competing roster, but thus far he has made a team that has been expected to finish last, compete hard every night. IF he could get the same kind of fight out of players that make up a contending team, then maybe he could really accomplish something. If you want to debate the merits of WD anymore I suggest you don't take up any more room in the Jake Virtanen thread.
  4. Obviously he is an above average coach - he coaches in the NHL...
  5. Babcock was already mentioned. Guy Boucher only played for McGill. Barry Trotz only played in the WHL and is 6th in all time wins for NHL coaches. Jeff Blashill is an up and coming, already head coach for Detroit who only really played in the ECHL. Jack Capuano only played 6 games in the NHL and has now coached 7 seasons at the NHL level... I could go on and on, but obviously you are just be lazy suggesting such things. I believe AV coached a pretty offensive styled team there for awhile until the core got stale. JT said the same thing when he got fired and WD had to deal with it as well.
  6. You should really back up your statements with facts or your comparisons with examples at the least. Green's coaching has been a masterpiece this year? Hardly. He might not even make the playoffs. If his coaching was a masterpiece, Virtanen would be their leading scorer, Subban would of rounded out his game and they would be leading their division into the playoffs. Green is a good coach and very well might take over for WD one day, but to claim that his coaching is a masterpiece is a little outlandish.
  7. You mean a guy that will score 40-50 points with 25 goals and force the entire opposing team to keep their head up? Yeah, sign me up any day! Torres had a few 20+ goal seasons for the Oilers which, had he of done that throughout his career, would of been a pretty decent pick himself for #5. I am still hoping Virtanen can put together a Dustin Brown type presence on the ice, but perhaps he peaks later on in his career rather than earlier. As in, basically reverse what Brown has done where Virtanen would get 25-30 points in his first several seasons and then is averaging between 50-60 in his peak years.
  8. I guess Gretzky should of been one of the best coaches ever... I think there is more to it than just NHL games played, but I do agree that we need to keep him around.
  9. An interesting fact about Tryamkin pointed out in a Virtanen article: "Last September, Virtanen saw how seriously Nikita Tryamkin took his level of fitness concern by dropping four-and-a-half per cent body fat in one month." I hope he continues his motivation for training over the summer and into the next season. If he can play at his peak fitness level and play a high intensity game for 60 minutes, he is going to dominate. http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/i-have-to-prove-that-i-belong-would-be-canuck-virtanen-turning-corner-with-comets#comments
  10. Management probably has faith that he will turn his game around. I can see them re-upping him at Sbiza like money at 3.5-4.0 mil range until he is an UFA. It is a good idea to have a big physical guy on either defensive side - Gudbranson shooting right and Tryamkin shooting left. This allows the coach to matchup against potential powerforwards that might be giving us trouble. When we are back in the playoffs this guy will be money well spent.
  11. I think writing off a player because a bunch of their points come from the powerplay seems a little suspect without actually going into any kind of detail as why that might be. Perhaps it is a better indication of the team he is playing for rather than just solely himself? The entire 1st line on the Green Bay Gamblers has a similar situation where a lot of their points are scored on the powerplay: Connor Mackey: 47 points in 57 games (5v5 points = 13) Jared Spooner: 45 points in 53 games (5v5 points = 24) Dante Palecco: 36 points in 57 games (5v5 points = 19) To me it really seems like the Green Bay Gamblers just aren't a very good 5v5 team, but can get on the score board during the powerplay. I think you also need to consider how those points are scored on the PP by Mittlestadt because he is making high skill plays both in terms of setting up the plays but also finishing them. You can liken this to another Canuck prospect Brock Boeser, who in his last USHL season (also his draft year) scored 68 points in 57 games, but 32 of those points came on the powerplay.
  12. Nice snipe! I hope he continues his offensive prowess and it becomes a fixture of his game. Here is a link of a longer clip: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/juniors/juolevi-right-place-right-time-snipe-home-goal/ EDIT: Apparently Juolevi had a huge hit on Brown? Did anyone see that??
  13. I know a lot of people on CDC think that Nichushkin is bust because he is not playing in the NHL currently, but he had a pretty solid showing in the KHL this year and could come back in a year or two and really show people what he can do. I would not discount him yet.
  14. This. He is going to be exceptionally tired from yesterdays game. I do not expect him to get over 10 minutes of playing time and most of the minutes coming in the beginning of the game and then regulated to bench in the 3rd period. Watch CDC erupt because of it without considering that he played a game and half yesterday.
  15. I would say he was definitely the most dangerous and creative forward on the ice. It was overtly noticeable that he gave the most effort when the puck was on his stick and he wanted that puck. He had slick evasive maneuvers and could dangle past two guys to give himself a better scoring opportunity. However, it was also noticeable that he was floating when it wasn't on his stick - although he did back checked when it mattered. His skating seemed slower than a lot of players on the ice, but this could of been a lack in conditioning because he wasn't always consistently skating hard, especially in board battles and puck chases. He looked visibly out of gas in overtime - even compared to a lot of players. If he was always on the go at full tilt then I think he would appear to be a faster player. In those regards, in my opinion, he does not seem like he is NHL ready and will have to work hard to get to that level. It will be an eye opening experience for him to play some time in the NHL or the AHL, but I think he needs to start somewhere this year so he knows where he needs to get to. Overall, he kind of reminds of me of Markus Naslund.
  16. Yeah no kidding! That was a hell of a shot!
  17. Charlie McAvoy's size? This is the same 6'1" 211 lbs guy were are talking about here right?
  18. I would have to say that Boeser has been the best forward in the 3rd period. He has given himself lots of opportunities with his creativity with the puck and now has 6 shots on net.
  19. You were saying? haha Wolanin just ties the game!
  20. "Yeah Jake Oettinger, for a freshman, is so goo... North Dakota Scores!!!" haha
  21. I didn't see all of it, but it didn't look like a typical hockey wrist guard because it was wrapped around the thumb. Not exactly like this but something similar that extended further down the wrist:
  22. Looks like Boeser is still protecting his wrist - he has some sort of black wrap around it. I would also add that based on his play during this game so far, he is going to have a wake up if he plays a game for the Canucks this season, his compete level in all zones just isn't there as he is kind of floating in the neutral and defensive zones.
