  1. Kudos to them on choosing a name for their organization that generates discussion on an important issue. I just don't really see many substantial solutions being presented. All Lives Matter seems more like a name/phrase an abortion group would use anyway lol
  2. I know. the phrase, yes, nothing wrong with it. generally it is just taken out of context and/or associated with the BLM organization's views
  3. Probably because they are also disproportionately living in impoverished areas and have a higher likelihood of crime. blacks commit crimes at nearly 3x the rate that whites do (so does not make up for being shot 6x more). blacks commit 36% of violent crime in the USA while being only 13% of population. Certainly not the only reason, but a part of it.;
  4. Fairly small yeah - NHL owners are not the only major players though. Perhaps I am just unable to envision what sort of policy changes (federal, state) would help to 'significantly' curb the systemic racism plaguing the nation down there... the problem is so multi-faceted it would take a PhD thesis to get though all the necessary angles. Bezos and Gates are worth more than all the NHL owners combined although I suppose they are not forced to gave to their union members' demands Out of interest... FA comes in at #12 .. and the second line here had me chuckling pretty hard 12: Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini — $3.3 billion Highest-paid player: Canucks left wing Loui Eriksson is paid $8 million a year. https://www.businessinsider.com/the-23-richest-billionaire-nhl-franchise-owners-2018-3#12-vancouver-canucks-owner-francesco-aquilini-33-billion-12
  5. Unfortunately confusion arises as the phrase "Black Lives Matter" is also the name of a political group/organization that has a variety of views/focus issues (gun laws, healthcare, environmental) People mix up talking about the phrase and the group all the time. 99% of people will agree with the phrase that black lives matter, but less will agree with the entire platform of the BLM group.
  6. I don't know if the owners, that all likely live very far apart from one another, have the collective clout to demand government policy changes in regards to systemic racism.... My thought is they play on Saturday but who knows these days.
  7. I agree it would be most effective for drawing attention and discussion - so you you think the NHLPA will demand Saturday be included in the boycott ?
  8. I really do empathize with people who grow up in an endless cycle of poverty - it is not their choice. I don't think violence or looting is a solution in any way shape or form. Black people need to hold other black people accountable too that are only further perpetuating the negative stereotype. America had a black president for 8 years - I am probably speaking out of ignorance but that alone seems an indication that the systemic issues down there improved in recent decades. He had ample time to tackle the race issue, holding two super majorities when first elected, if he was unable then what can be done ? I would rather the outrage be placed on politicians that have been serving for decades rather then generalize some tragic incidents (often negligent, inexcusable) to the overall police force in north america.. Do you think Canada would (will) elect an Aboriginal PM ? Since people keep comparing the two demographics it seemed an interesting thought
  9. I thought one of the leaders of BLM said the looting was justified ? In Chicago specifically..
  10. Many are probably not fit for the job, you are right, recruiting new police people was difficult before and now it will be a monumental task... requiring more funding...
  11. Welp. At least the weather is nice out I'll find something else to do. Rest day for the boys!
  12. the guy is still alive I believe, likely paralyzed though. white people get shot by cops regularly too. I feel like just spitting some facts out here, since this thread is never getting back on track. The report, published by the ACLU on Wednesday, shows that from 2015 to 2019, an average of 19.4 fatal police shootings occurred per week in the country over the first half of the year. Despite the pandemic and months of anti-racism protests, the U.S. had the exact same average number of police shootings per week for the first half of 2020. As of June 30, police officers had fatally shot 511 people, more than the 484 shot during the same period in 2019. For the past five years, police have shot nearly 1,000 people per year, totaling at least 5,442 deaths from January 1, 2015, to June 30, 2020. Demographic breakdowns of the fatalities show police shootings disproportionately impact Black Americans. Of those shot by police, 24% are Black, though Black people make up about 13% of the U.S. population, and 46% are white, though white people account for 60% of the U.S. population. Americans are killed by police at triple the rate of Canadians, the country with the next highest rate of killing, and at least 16 times the rate of England and Germany.
  13. I don't think anthems and flags should be political - although I suppose national pride is not universal anymore - but that's just me. Yeah the special nights always seemed like a bit of a cash grab anyways to me. Diwali, Aboriginal, and Chinese New Years games etc.. There are plenty of threads for non-hockey discussion and if posts relate to how it will impact the game tonight, or this series, that's fine but it was getting pretty deep and away from hockey altogether imo It is nice to have a small escape from the numerous issues being highlighted and discussed all over
  14. sometimes I wish I had AV's "bubble" outlook ... he must not use social media lol
  15. Tanev looked hurt after he took that big hit last game too. fell a bit awkwardly. he stayed on for like another 2 minutes after though such a freaking warrior..
  16. I agree I was more referring to the recent uptick on these boards. the kid has shown up to play this post season really earning that contract. if not on the score sheet all the time he contributes in many other ways.
  17. Are you one of the White Rock dad's taking the government to court ? Good on ya KOS
  18. Thanks, needed this. I kept thinking wow OEL is quite a player can we afford him ? But you are right. we can afford other shutdown defencemen for cheaper as we have our elite offensive talent on the back end already
