If Not For 1 Fatal Mistake Jim Benning May Still Be Our GM
PhillipBlunt replied to Gator's topic in Canucks Talk
Benning did make some pretty obvious gaffes and definitely earned the dismissal. That being said, anyone who hates the guy is a fool. I never understand people having such strong personal feelings against someone they've never met. Supposedly people who've met both Benning and Green said they were really friendly folks. I wish them nothing but the best. -
Something had to give, for sure. Boudreau may prove to be the elixir that cures this team's woes, along with a couple of significant trades. One would think that the safe bet would have been to hand the team to an interim coach like Shaw for the remainder of the season, as clearly ownership was fine with giving the management of the team to Smyl and Gear on an interim basis.

If Not For 1 Fatal Mistake Jim Benning May Still Be Our GM

Yeah, he had some it coming for sure. Did he fail miserably? Not so much. He made some great moves at the draft table and some decent trades, but his free agency signings and other trades sealed his fate. That and only seeing the post season twice in 8 years. How would anyone actually know if the fan base could "handle" a rebuild, when they never even approached it that way? I think fans, for the most part want to see that their team has a direction and an identity. If that involves a few years of drafting well and developing said players, most knowledgeable fans would be fine with that This I never agreed with. Why should the team be beholden to just two players specifically? It made no sense to prolong what needed to happen just because it wasn't considered fair to the Sedins. The push was an abject failure anyways. Tortorella going with Lack instead of Luongo was a huge mistake. Kesler wanted out because he saw that the team was stagnating, and he had the clauses that gave him the right to exercise them. So? It ended up being a horribly myopic move that served literally no purpose. Benning's most fatal mistake was building middling rosters that provided middling results. Desjardins clearly wasn't ready for the NHL, and may never be, as he returned to the AHL. Green had his share of issues, but if he had a better, stronger, roster maybe he could have pulled it off, or maybe he'll always be the type of coach that develops young players well but can't strategize to save his life. Both Benning and Green had run their course with the team. -
[Report] Canucks recall Travis Hamonic

Exactly. You get it. -
Personally, what players do on their own time is their own business. If they bring it to the rink, that's a whole other issue, and ends up probably only hurting them in the long run. I don't need to know that every single player on the Canucks are high character people in order to cheer for the team. If someone is a convicted sex offender than they should be in prison anyway, and doing coke is probably counterproductive when playing such a physical sport that works the cardiovascular system as much as hockey does. Regardless, I want the Canucks to be a competitive, hard-nosed, exciting team that makes the playoffs perennially. If one or two players on the roster happen to be douchey, so be it.
