How so ? If our new Gm decides to give the Canucks a makeover, who do we have as desirable assets to help him facilitate his moves ? Our plethora of third and fourth liners ? As Ninja was able to glean from my post, Horvat is not Benning's pick so who's to say he's the type of player he wants on the Canucks going forward. Please, enlighten me with your wisdom on the subject rather than tagging me with a lame "drive by" post judgement.

I'm not in as much of a panic as some seem to be to get Bo into the big club, but I can't help but wonder whether or not we will ever see him with the Canucks. One of the by-products of a change in management is a change in playing style. Who's to say Benning doesn't decide that the only marketable assets we have in order to get "his kind" of players are Bo and Hunter. I certainly hope we keep Bo, he may not be ticking all the boxes yet but I see loads of potential there.

I don't want to draw the details out of you L.K., but can you at least reassure us that it's not Bo's dad ? The last thing we need is another Hodgson 2.0

[Confirmed] Jim Benning signs as new Canucks GM

It's hard to formulate any kind of reasonable defence of the Canucks draft record for the last 10 years. Delorme and Snepsts have been massive disappointments when it comes to CHL draft choices and the dub in particular. Even Gradin, who was a pretty good Swedish scout for us, was also our head of Euro scouting for the better part of a decade between 97-07, and I fail to remember the Canucks drafting many (any ?) successful non-Swedish players during that time either. Wouldn't break my heart to see a housecleaning take place in that department as well. -

It's never going to happen. We have been the team Jerome "most loves to hate" for more than a decade. Jerome's a straight up guy and would never brush that sentiment aside. He would never disrespect flames fans by signing with his home town oilers either. -

Not to mention the fact that Nashville doesn't exactly have a lineup loaded with free agent signings. Other than the few they pick up in trades they have to play their drafted players. Not a knock on Fenton as I think he's done a decent job in Nash. but I don't think this is a fair yardstick to measure the 2 G.M.'s. -
No argument from me that we got good value in that trade. Hardly made up for watching Keenan break the spirit of one of our all time greats in the months leading up to that trade though.
-
Yes, I'm guessing now that's the one mistake he's referring to. I don't remember Keenan being a positive influence on Marcus though, he had the worst numbers of his career when iron Mike was here and I seem to remember Marcus requesting a trade away from the Canucks when he was the coach.
-
Mike Keenan only ever did one positive thing for the Canucks, and that was trade Luongo to us when he was GM of the panthers. And what do you mean he should have told Bert to let Steve Moore go ? He was rightfully fired 6 years before that ever happened

I'd like to see Neely pitch that to Trevor with a straight face -
Mike Keenan won a Stanley cup. Would you want him back ?

Actually, if there is a non-compete clause in his contract they Can prevent him from going to the Canucks, let alone prevent other teams discussing a job with him. Jim Nill had one written into his contract when he was the A.G.M. with the Wings that prevented Minnesota and Toronto from speaking with him, but he had an "out clause" in 2013/14 that allowed for him to bolt to Dallas. Story Here- http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/01/27/gmc-why-long-time-detroit-executive-jim-nill-wont-be-running-your-team-anytime-soon/ Detroit seems to use these things pretty regularly as I've also read remarks from Ken Holland that he would not allow anyone to speak with the coach of their AHL franchise while he is under contract as well. These clauses have existed in the private sector forever (Massachusetts, where Benning works has enforced them since 1837- source :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-compete_clause#Massachusetts). I'm sure nobody on CDC has seen Bennings contract, so its all just conjecture whether any such clause exists, but it's just as silly for posters to claim that these things don't exist because they haven't heard about them as it is for people to claim that they do. -
Refreshing optics there Old news, nice to see a projected lineup that isn't peppered with multiple FA's or rookies because it's the most likely scenario. Imo we drop Schroeder, Dalpe and trade Hansen (Booth I'm on the fence about, my gut tell's me to trade him after his little resurgence and before he gets hurt again) making room for 1 FA acquisition and 1-2 rookies/promotions.

I'm on the fence regarding keeping Torts as I feel we could be successful with his style but it would require a significant overhaul of our lineup. But it is interesting to note that some of the "Torts should go" posters who are getting jumped on here are not putting forward opinions on Torts coaching style that haven't been agreed with by professional hockey people in the game. This article is a blog from NY that deals primarily with Gillis comments on 1040 but also has some direct quotes from Glen Sather : http://snyrangersblog.com/coachesgm/john-tortorella/read-the-canucks-gm-doesnt-like-the-style-john-tortorella-is-playing/ Another article with direct quotes from the Rangers colour commentator (and former player, for you young'uns) Dave Maloney : http://snyrangersblog.com/coachesgm/glen-sather/read-management-thought-the-rangers-were-unwatchable-in-the-playoffs/

Canucks 2nd rounder 36th overall
hlinkas wrister replied to Bobby_Lu1ngo's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Dougherty would be a very good pick imo, he's got decent size and offensive abilities. So many d men that turn out to be studs come from the 20-40 range, wouldn't break my heart if we looked for one with this pick. -
If you measure Draisaitl and Dal Colle as having equal attributes, you take the Canadian kid all day long and twice on Sundays imo. The olympics is their Stanley cup and a fair few of them even think the IIHF world chumpionship is more worthy. There's always exceptions of course but there's no denying what the Stanley cup means to Canadian (even American) kids.

Not disagreeing with what your saying here, but a common belief around here seems to be that the Canucks need to get younger ( I've made the statement myself at times). But the stats I have found say that there are 12 teams who have a higher average age than the Canucks- including Detroit, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Montreal, Philly, San Jose, Chicago, Boston and Anaheim. It seems there are some conflicting data between different websites but generally Vancouver consistently comes in around the middle of the pack. Is the real problem with the Canucks that they are too old or as Torts said they are too stale ?
-
Well if there is one thing we can all agree on apparently, it's that Torts is certainly a divisive coach for the fanbase. Trev and the new GM have a big decision on their hands, either move some players and get the guys in here that can play Torts style, or find a coach that has the flexibility in his systems to get the most out of the players we have. Pile that on top of us drafting higher than we have in 14 years and it has all the makings of a summer of drama that we may look back at 10 years from now as a turning point or a tanking point in the franchises history. I sure am glad right about now that we have Trevor instead of Gillis making these calls.
-
Stunning that we let him go to Phoenix where he only got 1.75 per for 2 years, just stunning. Lappy was a good servant but I think the mindset was Richardson made up for the loss. Would have been the perfect 4th line center for Torts system though and decent at faceoffs, something you can never have too much of.

[Speculation] Kesler to remain a Canuck
hlinkas wrister replied to TheRussianRocket.'s topic in Canucks Talk
He still looked off to me last year other than his 2 week all star stint on the Sedins Line in Oct./Nov. where everyone was racing to "name the line". Can't read Trevor's mind but I'm guessing that if he thinks we are a playoff team next year then Ryan stays at least until the deadline. -
Compare their first half stats to their second half stats. Compare their injury records this year to previous years. Kesler at his age and skill level should and can maintain that pace, but the Sedins couldn't (regardless of their pre-season condition). Its not like he was topping up their ice time with extra power play duty, he had them killing penalties for petes sake.

I've got a lot of time for Torts, the man- he's brutally honest (to his own detriment sometimes) and I've got to say that if I played for the guy I would probably skate through the boards for the guy, as a player you always want to know where you stand with the coach. I see a lot of statements like "he's not the right coach for this team" but I don't think that's entirely the case- I think a more honest assessment would be "he is not the right coach for this team right now". His systems ask a lot of the players physically, everybody has to play a complete 200 foot game and he tried right from training camp to get them to the level of fitness that was required of it. Problem is, the best players on this team are not 25 years old any more and they are not up to the task. 5 years ago I think he could have been the guy to get us to Lord Stanley, now it's up to Trevor if he's the right man for the rebuild- and if he stays next year I believe it's not going to be any better over 82 games than it was this year. Either way in Trevor I trust.

Yup, its pretty inaccurate to completely classify MG as a GM fail. His draft record isn't perfect but it's better than most of our previous GM's. Seemed pretty astute at finding college and lower tier free agents flying under the radar as well. I think its more than fair to feel disappointed with how he handled some of our UFA's, and the optics of losing Lu and Cory aren't good, but to use Roy, Pahlsson, Sturm, Connauton and Ellington as the measuring sticks of his tenure here is grasping at straws really.
