  1. I wanted to ask how did Mike Gillis circumnavigate the cap? What is wrong with back diving contracts?

The penalty just stunk because the league ALREADY APPROVED the contract when it was first submitted to them.  They only retro-actively decided to punish the Canucks AFTER THE FACT.

One can accept that life often isn't always fair....but what REALLY stinks is a number of teams have had their possible penalty lessened (eg., Weber).  But the Canucks as usual get the shaft.

@Where's Wellwood What I don't understand is why are we getting punished for that. It was WITHIN THE RULES of that CBA. Yes, the CBA has changed, but it was signed before the new CBA. I think Gillis did a genius move that was within the rules

I don't call it a genius move when it only saved what $1.2 million per year give or take?  Carey Price was making $6.5 million as of 2012-13 and for 6 years. Gillis pushed the envelope. And the team has made to suffer for it. Had Gillis given Luongo a similar contract. He would have found it way easier to trade him, and probably gotten better return.

Yes it sucks the league retroactively punished Vancouver. It's probably costing Gillis on getting another GM gig again.
