  1. It's to Vancouver's benefit that he stays 2-3 years at UND. That way we he arrives he will be more seasoned and for salary cap purposes, he will head into his entry level deal at a later age. Just like Ben Hutton. Correct me if i'm wrong.
  2. here are the 6th overall picks since 1990 I would take a Chris Kreider over half of these guys. 6th overall does not guarantee an NHL All-Star. If Jake becomes a phyiscal 2nd or 3rd line winger; that seems about right compared to other picks. 2013 Sean Monahan C Ottawa (OHL) Calgary Flames 2012 Hampus Lindholm D Rogle (Swe) Anaheim Ducks 2011 Mika Zibanejad C Djurgardens IF (Swe) Ottawa Senators 2010 Brett Connolly RW Prince George (WHL) Tampa Bay Lightning 2009 Oliver Ekman-Larsson D Leksand (Swe) Phoenix Coyotes 2008 Nikita Filatov LW Moscow CSKA-2 Columbus Blue Jackets 2007 Sam Gagner RW London (OHL) Edmonton Oilers 2006 Derick Brassard C Drummondville (QMJHL) Columbus Blue Jackets 2005 Gilbert Brule C Vancouver Giants (WHL) Columbus Blue Jackets 2004 Al Montoya G U. of Michigan (NCAA) New York Rangers 2003 Milan Michalek LW/RW Ceske Budejovice HC (Czech) San Jose Sharks 2002 Scott Upshall LW/RW Kamloops Blazers (WHL) Nashville Predators 2001 Mikko Koivu C TPS Turku (FNL) Minnesota Wild 2000 Scott Hartnell C Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) Nashville Predators 1999 Brian Finley G Barrie Colts (OHL) Nashville Predators 1998 Rico Fata RW London Knights (OHL) Calgary Flames 1997 Daniel Tkaczuk C Barrie Colts (OHL) Calgary Flames 1996 Boyd Devereaux C Kitchener Rangers (OHL) Edmonton Oilers 1995 Steve Kelly LW Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) Edmonton Oilers 1994 Ryan Smyth LW Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) Edmonton Oilers 1993 Viktor Kozlov C Moscow Dynamo (Russia) San Jose Sharks 1992 Cory Stillman C Windsor Spitfires (OHL) Calgary Flames 1991 Peter Forsberg C Modo Hockey Ornskoldsvik (SEL) Philadelphia Flyers 1990 Scott Scissons
  3. We now have seven first rounders since 2011 in our system. Even if only half of them pan out, I like where we sit much better than before the 2013 draft when we had so few prospects it was laughable. Now we need a blue chip offensive defenseman in the first round. I'm hoping we can trade up a few spots and get someone like Provorov.
  4. Did you ever consider that practicing with the Sedin's, etc , and playing the odd game, may be better for his development than playing with 17 year olds? If he shows he's not ready by the end of the 9 games then send him back but if I were Benning, i'd stretch out his games, and let him play in the WJC.
  5. It could mean, he makes 4 million 4 years from now instead of one million. Of course its a big deal. You want to have players as developed as possible coming into their entry level deals, that way you can sign more free agents and have some cap room to play with.
  6. Does anyone know if the games in Utica will count towards the 9 games until they have to decide whether or not to send him back to junior?
  7. I don't understand this logic? How would having Ott detract from our young players being able to play. There are tons of injuries in the NHL, if Horvat and Gaunce are ready to play, they will be on the ice. Why pencil them in already before they've proved it. Especially Gaunce who can be brought up and down from Utica next year.
  8. Hopefully if we decide to move him on, we can trade him. He will be easier to deal with the cap going up next year and some teams will need to hit the ceiling. Even if we get a small return, we can sign a free agent or make a trade with the remaining space 8-9 million could get us significant upgrade(s) on Booth. Maybe we should save or compliance buyout just in case Luongo's contract becomes a problem again.
  9. Ott would be fantastic for our 4th line, unfortunately he gets paid probably too much, and will command more in FA season, than he probably deserves. Let's see how Schroeder pans out before we make any rash decisions.
  10. I made this point in another post but I will make it again here. We would not have been able to sign Hogdson this past Summer. He got over paid by Buffalo and still doesn't project to be much more than a 60 point guy playing big minutes and powerplay time. The trade was made for Cap reasons. Kassian fits under our cap; hasn't had a breakout season yet so won't get huge RFA money. He has too much size, skill, speed to be a complete bust even if he continues to play as he is now. He brings intimidation to the table, an intangible that was sorely lacking in 2011 and which becomes necessary in the war of attrition that is the playoffs. Gillis may have been able to get more for Hogdson but name me other players Kassian's age that bring all the elements he has to the table. There are very few. Guys like Hodgson are easier to find through free agency(Santorelli anyone), the power forwards are coveted and usually take longer to develop.
  11. Calling lines 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th is an artificial construct that allows less intelligent people to understand hockey. Commentators use it to make generalizations and that's why its become part of the lexicon. If we try to build a team based on these type of unhelpful abstract concepts we will fail because we'll bring in the washed up Pahlson type players. I don't think this team needs that as the OP states.
  12. We don't need to construct the team exactly like it was in 2011. We don't really know what we have in Schroeder yet so let's not be so quick to judge whether he can be an effective 3rd or 4th line center. Just because a player doesn't fit a stereotypical mold of how a bottom six players is supoosed to look and play, doesn't mean they won't be effective. Personally, I think the idea of 3rd line as a checking line is simply outdated. Its not really an intelligent distinction to make. All line should balance scoring and a 2-way game. If you can put out a 4th line against a first line, then you have an effective checking line. The way this team looks constructed the next few years is to be a 4 line team, something than Boston, St. Louis, and Chicago have, but we haven't had, even in 2011. I think labelling Schredder as unable to fill a bottom six role is shortsighted and not based on any real evidence.
  13. Its a mute point, like a point that a deaf person would make. lol jk
  14. On an earlier point, Schroeder is subject to waivers but can go on a conditioning stint.
  15. Great post OP. I totally agree, we the pieces for a 4th line that can check. We should have offensive balance on the other three lines. If a 3rd line center hads little offensive upside, than they are a bit of a waste of a roster spot unless they are Selke material(like Malhotra was in 2011). Those guys don't grow on trees. At one point Pahlson was that type of player, but was too old when we got him. Excellent point on Horvat, he will likely fill that role in the future. We shouldn't trade away orgainzational depth for a type of player wo is redundant on this roster.
  16. Baggins, you are spot on about the Edler NTC. Its a mute point, Gillis has got our entire core to sign below market value. A huge and overlooked advantage for the hockey club, trading a player with a NTC would be bad for the morale of the entire organiztion. Edler has had a bad season but he's still young and i'm sure will bounce back.
  17. I think it all depends on what our options are in the Summer. If we can upgrade our two most pressing needs, more scoring depth and a powerplay quarteback puck moving defencemen then I think we should buy out Booth. He simply isn't worth his cap hit as a grinder. He's not an essential part of the team at this point, but could prove to be some scoring depth(which in the past 5 games he has). If we don't have many options and the good UFA's are signing for huge coin, then we hold on to him. He might be a nice piece to trade at the deadline in his last year before UFA status.
  18. I agree with the last post, that is a ridiculous assertion. It's too bad Gaunce didn't make Team Canada but if you look at his size and strengths, he looks more cut out for the North American rink. They have to pick the team based on who will play the best on the European Ice. I think Gaunce will pan out to be a good 3rd or 4th liner which is good for where he was drafted. Guys drafted after 320 rarely turn into top offensive talents. Let's just have realistic expectations for the kid.
