  2. I think the whole "the new generation is dumb" is a narrative constructed by older people to make them feel better as their knowledge loses value. Previously "intelligence" was often synonymous with knowing a lot, this is no longer the case, as everyone has the entirety of the internet at their disposal at all times, so being able to rattle off the capital cities of all European countries is no longer valued, as you can just Google the information if you were to need it. Another thing is that as society changes different information is valued, most younger people (that I know anyways) do not know as much about birds as older people do, but all young people can do their taxes online and will not accidentally lose all their money since they gave a sketchy website their credit card info.

Don't forget Ferland, Benn, and the ghosts of Sven Baertschi and Ryan Spooner. The cherry on top is Luongo but that's not Benning's fault.

Thankfully, we'll clear the books at the end of next season.

The Luongo thing is so damn weird. First off the contract wasn't illegal at the time, secondly all teams signed front loaded contracts, yet we're the only team that gets punnished.

But yeah, after this season Pettersson and Hughes are gonna cost at least $12 million more per year, so any cap relief we get is gonna get eaten up by them. Also, I don't trust Benning to manage our cap moving forward considering his history.

then wed be on the hook for eriksson til 2023 no thanks hopefully he just retires hes definately the worst signing in canucks history other than messier

I'd even argue that he's done more damage than Messier did. There was no salary cap back then, plus we got Bertuzzi in the Linden trade.

Bourque was a first or second team all-star a record 17 years in a row - and 19 times total (13 first all-star teams), including against much better competition part of which was Lidstrom’s first decade or so of play.   More then any other player in the history of the game including Wayne Gretzky.   11th in games played, first in points, on much worse teams, higher plus minus too.    And not all Norris are created equal .. a minus 2 his last one, it was an embarrassing life achievement award to set him up to tie Harvey.   Against “killers “ like Gonchar and Rafalski and a young Phanuef.   There is a reason Lidstrom didn’t win one until he was 30, and it wasn’t because he just kept getting better with age.   He was great already, but there were greater players still in the game.   Bourque was a first team all-star in 2001... what year did he win a cup again and retire?

Nicklas would have won the Norris in his 20s had been named Lindsay instead of Lidström and born in Abbotsford instead of Avesta. It's crazy to think that he managed to win seven Norrises when he got his first at age 30. He was a trail blazer in a way Bourque never was; he the first European to captain his team to a Cup and the first European to win the Conn Smythe. Bourque is 10 years older than Lidström, so when you're talking about his 2001 season (first team all star), you've gotta compare it to Lidström's 2011 season, where he won the Norris (you can of course make the case that he didn't deserve to win it that year, but at least he wasn't miles worse than Bourque at the same age.)

Lidström won four Stanley Cups to Bourque's one, you can argue that he had better teams, but then again, he managed to win with them. He's also a member of the Trippel Gold Club, something Bourque is not. Ray played during a much higher scoring era, that explains his better counting stats.

    Lidström >> Bourque.

Thanks for running! This was fun.

A comparison of CDC's list and mine:

      CDC My List
    1 Bobby Orr Bobby Orr
    2 Nicklas Lidstrom Eddie Shore
    3 Ray Bourque Ray Bourque
    4 Doug Harvey Nicklas Lidstrom
    5 Paul Coffey Doug Harvey
    6 Denis Potvin Denis Potvin
    7 Larry Robinson Red Kelly
    8 Eddie Shore Larry Robinson
    9 Scott Niedermayer Al MacInnis
    10 Al MacInnis Paul Coffey

My honourable mentions: Pierre Pilote and Chris Chelios

All in all, fairly close to my list in a sense. The order was shifted around a fair bit, but only one player on my top 10 didn't get in (Red Kelly). Niedermayer was a big difference from mine, as I had him down at 17th. I know Brad Park had a lot of steam in that last one as well, he was 13th for me. I was nominating Hedman a lot during the list creation--I had him at 18th. The first guy not best known for his NHL game was Fetisov who was 20th for me.

Not having Lidström in your top two should be considered a federal felony.

  7. The last thing Benning should do is go out and sign a bunch of guys. Eriksson, Beagle, Rousell, Myers and Sutter are costing us now. We don’t need any more horrible deals.

Not a reference but in 2011 during the Cup run I was in Hong Kong (good time to miss it all, amirite) and on an interview show the guest celebrity was wearing a Canucks tee shirt.  Never thought I'd see that as it's not even popular overseas.

(also was going to post this HIMYM clip, glad that Robin chooses the Canucks to be her team of choice -- take that, Leafs)

Haven’t watched that show in forever so I’d forgotten how bad it was. Man the dialog is so unnatural and none of the jokes are even remotely funny. How could this catch on?

    In my opinion:

    1. Linden

    2. Smyl

    3. Hank

    4. Naslund/Kurtenbach - different kinds of players and leaders, but hard to say which is greater

    5. Horvat - very high for how short he's been a captain. Already ahead of Luongo and McCarthy who were captains longer.

Wasn't Luo captain for one season only?

So, we're losing our second best defense man and two top six wingers this year? You don't think we should replace them in any way?

Our core in 2011 was built of the Manitoba Moose roster; Scheider, Kesler, Burrows, Bieksa, Rypien, Hansen, Raymond, Bourdon, Edler, Grabner, Bolduc... pretty impressive. I say what we have today has a lot more potential for sure. We're literally just missing prime Lou.

Is this really true? The 2011 team consisted of two Art Ross winners, a 41 goal scoring Selke winner, a first line winger with four straight 25 + goal seasons, two defensemen who topped out scoring 50 points and the best goaltending duo in the league. I think we forget just how good the 2011 team was.

Virtanen may not be of the expectation of a 6th overall pick, but he's far from a "whiff". He's still a 1st round pick in a redraft, but probably around the mid-1st. He has been improving his offensive numbers over the years and perhaps the best is yet to come. You also cannot ignore Jake's vastly improved defensive game and speed in the equation of assessment. Offensive stats aren't everything.

OJ is trying to overcome his injuries and if he can, then he has looked good in his playing stints. I think he will still make a career.

If we are talking historically for the Canucks, this has been some of the best drafting for our franchise. Of course it's still going to take time to see how things play out, but many analysts have put our prospect pool in the top 5 in the league (and that's with all the graduates already on the roster).

I believe Podkolzin will be a surefire player, so out of 5 top 10 picks (none higher than 5), he has two grand slams, one likely very good player, a decent one, and one "miss" that shouldn't be written off quite yet. The rest of our 1st round picks have been very good ones. We have several prospects that while they haven't cracked the NHL yet, they are looking very good in their respective leagues which is hopeful at the very least (when comparing to previous regimes). I predict Hoglander, Focht, Rathbone, Lind, Woo and DiPietro having significant impacts to our team and could be potential "stars". Players like Lockwood, Brisebois, and Gadjovich will get games, but may not have illustrious careers. Also cannot completely ignore overage prospect finds like Stecher and MacEwen, along with potentials in Rafferty and Michaelis.

So while I get that a lot remains to be seen, there is certainly reason for optimism. I believe most teams find 1 or 2 players that reach 300 games or so and we are looking like we could very well be above that average. I imagine Benning getting 3 consecutive Calder nominees (potentially 2 winners) is a feather in Benning's cap towards his drafting status though (and need I remind without a pick above #5).

I mean, it’s pretty clear that we should not have drafted Jake in 2014. The fact that our prospect pool is deep isn’t such an amazing thing since we’ve been like the worst team in the league these past five years.

When it comes to OJ these are some facts: he was drafted fifth overall and hasn’t played a single NHL game yet. Four players drafted in the first round that year have yet to make their NHL debut, they went 5, 18, 25, 28 overall. More than half of the players drafted in the second round have played NHL games. This is not a good thing.

A big part of your argument is that you seem to believe that our B level prospects will pan out, which is nothing but your beliefs. In the height of the Gillis era I was super stoked for Dane Fox, Jordan Subban, Anton Rödin, Nicklas Jensen, Hunter Shinkaruk and Jordan Schroeder. I was certain that at least a few of them would become good NHL players, and turned out none of them became anything.  I’m not saying that no one of our B level prospects will play in the NHL I’m just saying that hinging a big part of your argument on them doing so is a bad idea.

Again, my point is that Benning has done a fine job, but the Canucks have also been one of the worst (if not the worst) team in the NHL during his time as GM (while trying actively to be a good team, see all dumb July 1 free agent signings he’s made). So saying that he’s a good GM since our prospect pool is the best it’s been in years is strange, since that’s the only thing he has to show: our results have been atrocious and our salary cap is a mess.

JVs an NHLer...up for another contract.   Not a miss really, not a grand slam either.  Add McCaan and Boeser into the mix the narrative changes quite a bit doesn’t it.    It’s not uncommon that a few top ten picks don’t work out almost every draft .... as in not at all.   Some drafts more so then others - like the Sedins.   Recommend spending some time looking at the draft re-do’s of late on NHL.com (done a dozen or so)...the first round looks nothing like the draft order.   JV isn’t a great pick but he’s not a bad one either.   OJ is definitely leaning towards a bust for sure.   Puljajarvi was supposed to be a top prospect as was Yakupov - EDM missed on both those guys at a better spot to pick - it happens - PHI Iucked out and got potentially first overall Patrick...maybe they would have been better off not moving up at all.

Listen, I get what you’re saying, however, my point is that if you’re pushing the narrative that Benning’s drafting is historically great then missing on two top 10 picks doesn’t help your case.

Also if we focus on the Virtanen selection: the next four forwards selected have all out scored Jake. It clearly was a bad selection.

And sure, McCann has been good, but Benning traded him for a horrible defenseman just a year into his career, so I don’t know what that says about him as a talent evaluator.

I think Benning’s done a fine job in the first round, Brock, Elias and Quinn are all slam dunk picks, but his record is not perfect. He hasn’t really had amazing success in the later rounds, sure Tryamkin, Forsling (traded for Adam Clendening before he ever played a game for the Canucks) and Demko look like fine picks. None of them are stars, however. In recent years the Tampa Bay Lightning have found Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat (just to name a few) outside of the first round.

My point: Benning’s drafting has been fine, but not super amazing, like you and this thread are making it out to be.
