I still remember when Tallon and Luongo said they will bring many championships to florida for along time

Only made playoffs once .... since the luongo trade

But back on topic, Luongo is literally done man, he is super slow in net , even as a back up he would be expensive on any team lol

He will be remembered as the best goalie in Canuck history, his number will be retired one day as a canuck.

    still cant believe that contract...

There are much worse contracts out there, the NHL will take care of penalties because those other franchises are Bettman buddies and can't take the hits. Sutter, Parise

Retiring this year is the best case scenario.  We owe 8 Million, whether it is spread over 3 years or 1.  An 8 Million hit 3 years from now could really have a negative impact.

I maybe reading it wrong but a think CapFriendly states the Nucks are only hit for 15% of the cap hit.

The perfect scenario for the Canucks would be to trade Markstrom for a pick or two in 2020, his age in 3 years will start to be a issue and Demko would be pushing him out by then if not sooner or should be, and trade for Luongo to come back for next season, the CBA year will wash out a year and if he retires then the hit is negligible, he comes back as a backup and mentor, he did a great job with Schnides as a mentor.

That is just next year with Demko getting 50+ games or so, next year the wins an losses should be a side bar, next year should be about training prospects and picks in the NHL.

So one year of Luongo as backup and mentor, then the CBA year and then Luongo retires or is injured indefinitely, the Nucks sign another backup or bring Dipietro along

It’s truely amazing what finishing low in the standings for several years can do for your prospect pool.

You'd think it was a natural phenomenon the way these predictable roster-life cycles rise and fall.

To question the intent of the Canucks owning one of, if not the most, expensive rebuilds in NHL history, you’d have to first decide when the rebuild actually began in order to quantify such a position. You’d also have to decide on if you felt the 5 years of results were accidentally or purposeful achieved; managed or mismanaged, if you wanted to weight the costs of those results.

Like you say, a few less injuries, on a perfectly predictable roster of IR mainstays, might have seen this team in the playoffs. Predicting that this roster would suffer injuries is somewhat a safe bet and entirely manageable by the GM.

At some point, a small part of any fan’s thought process must grapple with the question of if these were accidental tanks or not. Did the GM truly not see the injuries coming each season? Or did he, which would then make these results, Stealth tanks.

Running down the walkways between two different tanks is also an option, which is like admitting that you don’t really care how the results were achieved; expensive Rebuild or not, mismanaged or not - the prospect pool is the defining metric for fan satisfaction, at least from what I’ve read on here.

You must be hated as well.

While SOOooo many poster will kneel at Benning's feet because he is perfect and knows everything they choose to ignore items like you mention, injuries are a surprise, didn't see that happening, spending some 85 million on FA's for the worst team in the league the last 4 years, this is a good thing?

But you see the easy out is, "it is not his fault" it is the guy that was before him going on 6 years ago, 2013/2014.

Credited with being a 50% success in top ten picks so far but "some may be better in another 3 or 4 years", this team is so bad why aren't these "successes" in the NHL like other teams have their picks? Is it possible they are not that good and the longer it takes for the fans to see is good for his job or ….ticket sales?

Regardless now, at this time I hope someone in power of this team looks at the future, not just next year but up to the CBA year and Seattle expansion.

The team could make the playoffs next year, that is no big deal half the teams make it just spend 25 mil on a bunch of FA dmen, the team would be good for one year because it is really two years with the lockout/strike coming.

The other idea could be to train as many of these prospects/projects/picks next year, lose with a purpose, training future NHL players, even when they come from the aHL they still need mucho time to acclimate to the NHL game so just skip the one step, the team will not be very good but it would not be on the players shoulders because no matter how hard they try they still lose, it would be because they have so many new layers learning to play and win in the NHL.

The upside is three fold, many very young prospects/projects/picks being evaluated, trained and traded if desired, likely top 10 pick in 2020 and the lockout/strike year would give them all a year to train to what they need to improve on, remove the stigma of years of losing, literarily a new start after a year off, quite possibly an additional top 10 pick.

For Expansion there will be many prospects/projects/picks to trade for really good 3rd/4th line proven NHL players, enough cap space to take a bad contract for a top pick.

A new GM might see this; for one more year of rebuilding the team in 2021

Starting after a labour stoppage, time off, a fresh start.

BB, HB, EP, QH JV, TD, MD, NT, TS, 2019 1rst, 2020 1rst, 2121 1rst, 35 mil in cap space

  4. The Canucks appear to be trying to finish .500 in points as an accomplishment.

Of course this has nothing to do with actual games won and lost, their current record is 31 W and 42 L, so a .500 wins/loss record is out of their reach but.

They have managed to make a top ten pick more of a wish, pure lottery luck and added a year to the rebuild.

Edmonton continues to teach what not to do, although this lesson was also demonstrated by Colorado, both teams made the playoffs too soon and both will/did need to do a mini blow up, drop and get great picks and then resurgence, an added 4 years of ineptitude.

Ive asked this a bunch but have never got a answer. Who cares about the age gap? There’s no league rule that states you need a balanced age range on your roster. The only way I could see justification is if you’re of the opinion that we were trying to speed up the rebuild and have us competing sooner than later. Adding closer to ready NHL youth to help in the now rather than way 4 years for them to develop. Unfortunately speeding this up did turn out an likely ended up setting us back a year or two in the process.

I agree with this. Sadly there’s a select few who think it’s been a rebuild since day one.

I didn’t say I did either, old or young I could care less about that with a player as far as if they’re effective on the ice or not. Contractually, until recently, younger guys generally were on cheaper deals after their ELC’s so there’s that to consider. I agree though, at that point I believe the mandate was simply trying to jumpstart the roster than overhaul it.

Don't get caught up on any ownership directions to Linden, he came here with carde blanche, ownership more than willingly took a step back from anything Canucks until the kids were out of school.

The way the team was run, you have to look at Linden's background, a polite hockey player, ever hear him swear or curse? A labour leader for a dozen years, a city icon. He was the perfect marketing move to allow for 6 years of failure. Linden's contract was the same duration as Bennings.

Linden the Labour leader who had mucho sympathy for the trials and tribulations of being a hockey player being treated like a piece of meat gets a job where he is in control of all things hockey. A position that he can control, the enemy's turf, he can be the "players" owner.

    So;

No trades of veterans after September 2014.

No asking to give up clause until the last few months

Generous contracts for aging veterans with guarantee's of stability.

    The Medicine Hat connection.

    The Portland connections

Old buddy's and players, have you ever heard of Benning swearing or cursing?

I bring up this swearing, cursing stuff in a context that some posters will be upset with, but in some religions and some very religious people the sins are great and Linden/Benning appear to be extremely …..pious.

Linden did not lie when he said the owners did not interfere, it was his abhorrence to lying that kept him from saying "rebuild" and even then he added "but we are not doing anything different", back to the truth.

Year four, owners approach Benning first because they already know Linden's stand, Linden leaves two months before his contract ends (option).

Benning given a 2 year contract to 2020/2021 with an option, to load up on top draft picks, prospects.

Benning signs FA's knowing the 2020/2021 season is probably lost and then the buy out is lower on the last year if needed. it is only two guys, Edlers contract might be 3 years but should be 2 with option.

If he is replaced I hope it is with an astute GM who knows the team needs blowing up and a restart which should be completed in 3 years or Benning is nurse maided and handcuffed signing FA's and trades, I hope they hire a cap consultant because they dont' seem to be able to negotiate contracts worth a ….

We need to win the coming lottery, and get Jack Hughes too.  Then, we will have three ligit super stars:  Pettersson, Hughes, Hughes.

Go for the Finn, a winger to play with either Pettersson or Horvat. Even though Hughes MIGHT be an upgrade for Horvat, he might also end up being another Nolan Patrick, a serviceable player that resembles Horvat already but needing more time. The Finn is already playing vs big men in Finland where they play a closer style to NA, Hughes is playing vs less skilled opponents. He could be great but the team could use size and wingers.

Want to lose for ?? Then the 2020 draft - Alexis Lafrenière with a consolation of maybe Quinton Byfield or one of the other 5 guys being noticed.

    A one, two punch of Pettersson - Lafreniere/Byfield with Horvat and Gaudette, a very potent middle, Size, EP 6'2", - AL - 6'2" QB - 6'5", Horvat 6' (tank), Gaudette 6'1+" and then wingers Boeser - 6'1", Kakko 6'3"/Podkolzin 6'1" - Lind, 6'3" - Gadovitch - 6'3", Goldy - 5'11"

Tryamkin, Hughes, Tanev/Edler, Stecher, Hutton, + a STUD

Next two drafts - 2019 - #2-7, 2020 #1 - 7 Forwards Maybe by then the team is looking to move Horvat for a STUD and Gaudette takes his place.

All done, playoffs and cup run 2020/2021 if there is a season if not then a great draft pick for 2021 and a cup run, playoffs.

This is A PLAN, TWO YEARS, DONE!

Then the polishing. But Benning cannot be allowed to be 100% in charge of trades, drafting or signing contracts or signing FA's.

if we can draft Byram ,  there will be nothing stealthy about this rebuild ..     It'll be a clear message that the hockey gods are shining their light on our fabled franchise

In a draft year when there are not many dmen in the top 20, that is not a year to draft a dman regardless if the team needs one, draft a forward and then load up on dmen the rest of the draft. I would suggest a trade but another Pouliot for a draft picks isn't what this team needs or even signing another Stecher, I think they have done that with Hughes, no over powering point shot and the team needs one for the PP. Bring back Tryamkin, he is a PP guy in Russia.

This year and next, go for the draft, even trade this year's picks for next years.

Hey Linden said the Canucks had paid for a number one when they announced the draft was gong to be held in Vancouver, think it may be true? And if the Nucks did get the #1 overall, Hughes (often injured and missing many games/tournaments this year) or the 6'4" Finn? IMO the Finn.

  8. Crystal Ball...the new CBA restricts contract lengths to 6 years so more teams can make the playoffs/ As t stands now Olly's 9.5 mil per year doesn't look so bad but if they had to resign him last year he would be getting McDavid money.^_^

The league will work the contracts so teams can not become dynasties of even repeat appearances. Not good for overall business.

The draft will go back to something like the McDavid draft where the bottom three are in one draw and the rest in another, there will be term requirements not just on tank and there.:towel:

There will be a "franchise" player clause.:o

There will be a lost year so contracts will be affected in some way(s).:picard:

I see a poster praised Benning for wasting 35 million dollars by spending to the cap for the now worst team in the league over the last three years and this year so far. I lot of hype over the modest run of games, great to see the young kids playing (Benning you were wrong again about them needing to play in the AHL).

I hope Benning isn't let near a pen when the next contracts are signed.

  9. TO just waits until July 15 and buys out Marleau, this doesn't help too much for that year but the following season they get the 6+ mil cap savings, maybe he even gets an injury.

All the talk now about offer sheets for Mathews don't forget Boeser with those rumours.

Arizona would be smart to go all in for Mathews and/or Marner, make offer sheets to both. Then they have the hammer for trade talk.

TO could always just throw a contract out there with retention to make room as well.

I was thinking the same thing.  If ever there was a time that the players could put the league over a barrel again this is it.  They still don’t acknowledge that they want to work under cap, Ferh has been both diplomatic and clear on this point, almsot like he’s making sure that the media and the league knows this.   I also wonder if the league itself timed it for their own benefit, to show a vote of confidence that there will be no labour dispute and its business as usual.

The cap works for what its intended to do for the LEAGUE, and approximately 20% of the union.   The bulk of the guys get their pay trimmed mostly in how many years they can expect employment.  The wily vet demographic no longer gets another contract after their third one, or if they do it’s for peanuts and one year deals - see Vanek, 50 pts and 2 million last year etc, and he’s the lucky one, see Hartnell and a whole pile of others who are a tier down barely make it into their 30.    Personally I think this is something the majority of the NHLPA holds against the cap in general and at some point might go to task again over it.  Can’t be fun for the stars either, knowing that their paycheques cut into their peers longevity and the clubs ability to ice a winner.  Tavares cashed out on what TO is promoting as a team friendly deal using SJ 13 million offer etc...well funny thing is SJ taxes are higher and the bottom line isn’t far off,  plus his endorsement deals are better in the hockey capital too.  Once Mathews and Marner signs they will be in tight to make the rest work...Horvat makes the same as Messier did when he was here, not saying pre-cap was good because it wasn’t, personally I think a hybrid would help with this a lot, allow each team a franchise player or dollar amount that doesn’t count towards the cap, with the same monetary restrictions (say 15% of the total cap or something, 20% is too much).

I think this announcement of the expansion date just guaranteed the league will act first to insure Seattle starts on time with a number of years without interruption. IMO the league presses really hard for the new CBA and cuts the season short or down right off the bat when a lot of FA's are still looking for work.

Next September will tell, I am sure the NHL will elect to end the CBA, the side of the negotiations that moves first usually has an advantage at least in perception. They will be side negotiating from a position of strength.

It’ll be funny Seattle starts with an NHL walkout.

hopefully Canucks are a winning team before that and get a high draft pick in the walkout lottery.

Pen got Crosby , but the Ducks almost lucked out they got 2nd overall.

Wrong year, new CBA will be done before May 2021.

And hopefully the Canucks have one more year of training kids to play and get another top 7 pick. IF there is a labour dispute for that year, previous years standings are used for the draft. If they revise the draft to do what it was supposed to do they might revert to 2014 rules with some qualifier exceptions, like multiple seasons at the bottom of the standings.

  12. One really big question,

What happens if the 2020/2021 season is cancelled due to another labour disruption?

Seattle wanted to join next year, really wanted to.

I think that they delayed it one year indicates a probable labour dispute. Combine that with numerous player contracts that minimize salary (loss) and/or increase bonus payments (July 1, before deadline) for that year show a great possibility.

There are many important issues for the players, Olympics, Euro games, escrow, FA issues, contract length, maybe even contract structures and revised draft rules.

IF the 2020/2021 season is dissolved how will that impact Seattle expansion? I am sure it will be clear like mud until just before so Seattle can take advantage of mistakes.

It's all entitled pov's..too lazy to type out a 2 or 3 para summary, overview of the Cdn teams past Q century. I've been away(as well), so likely haven't followed the day to day minutiae, that some fans have surely taken in. Also, some ar*ehole will next post them tinfoil pics, when you take time to state some points.

Nahh man..there are too many significant, urgent issues in the world to spend this much time analyzing a pro sport. In this world today, almost anything that involves billions of $ is likely rigged. Comes down to power, influence, bread & circuses, & unfortunate dishonest/manipulative human tendencies. Some present day cultures have turned this machiavellian crap into an art form.

But just with this thread, I'm glad if there's a few thousand views, & even one more person takes time to ponder this game's integrity. Ultimately when sport/competition loses the 'level playing field', it's eventually become pointless. In light of this fact, I've been quite strict in limiting the time(& almost ZERO $) I'll sacrifice following any pro sport(NHL is the only one I've watched, about past 3 decades).

I've spent a decent chunk of time doing sport(as there are so many benefits), namely marathons & long triathlons(ice hockey until early 20's)..but would never wanna watch something so bloody boring as a race! Due to a stubborn nature, if I don't trust something, then out of principle, hate to give it a freeken dime! But if one believes in something(GCG!), you get committed to the cause(or at least find it hard to give up completely).

Oddly enough if it was fixed the signing of the betting thing will straighten it out. No betting contractor will tolerate fixing. They are even starting to use more replays to get the calls right, starting only in some games this year, Barclay's would not have had this added technology.

BTW it is in writing Bettman declared Toronto "Canada's team" in 2011.

Was it fixed? Well, all the added US franchises. All the cups/runs to US teams that sprang out of the woodwork oddly enough teams that were almost bankrupt until the Arizona case, Buffalo, Carolina, Florida, Tampa, there are plenty of teams that were surprises. I have heard more than one source state the best thing that happened to the NHL was Vancouver not winning in 93/94.

I've seen the league do this to us before. We build a tougher roster, then they start calling everything. That Torts yr, was the most blatant reff-cheating & rigging that I've ever witnessed in the game. Just disgraceful. Weren't they giving us SEVEN MINUTE 2 man-disadvantages???

Around Dec/Jan 2014, we'd assembled some nice size/grit in our depth: Lain, Arch, Sestito, Alberts. Look what happened soon afterwards. Then after our toughness was injured/rendered toothless, Hanzal ran around taking out all our centers. Wouldn't surprise me if the league allowed him a sherwood with F***ing rebar inside! No wonder Torts soon lost it. Even the wh*re-media was getting digs in, whining about Sestito, when I'd never heard them ever complain about any enforcer playing in the 'privileged' US markets.

& if we had a soft team..guess what? Whistles get tossed. Opponents realizing this, start to run our guys over. It's bloody dangerous, & injuries can easily result. Plays like Kadri on Daniel, if you lack a nuclear-deterent.

Even DPS sends mixed-messages with unfathomably inconsistent rulings. I won't go down THIS jungle path..too long, but certainly part of this fiasco.

    *************************************************************************************************************************

How do you beat 2 rulebooks?

I'd made a thread coupla' yrs back(Lacking Team-Toughness) that took off to 30,40 pages, where we all mostly agreed we needed more. So of course I'm really glad JB addressed this deficiency. But I'll add, I think our tough guys need to be INSANEly-disciplined in how they play. The goalposts will likely sway like branches in a typhoon.

Keep an eye on this inconsistency, folks. The first game is an ominous indicator.

It is called "game management" and the refs' take instructions from their boss.

At one time the referee's were autonomous believe it or not, back before the lock out/strike they lost in 1993. After that they were used just like the NBA.

It isn't just this little item that gets managed, ever wondered how really good teams become so stupid late in the third period if they are winning over a "bad" team? It isn't just the number of penalties called but when they are called as well.

  15. Just now, NUCKER67 said:

Granlund makes the team, I think Archbald does because he has size and dances, Biega and Guance, the rest are waiver eligible.

Leipsic is just Vey, maybe not even as good, Vey bounced off a lot guys he tried to check, Leipsic just avoids the hitting.

Why don't we wait until the actual season actually starts before we bury this year's version....

I think we will be hard pressed to keep in the draft lottery with 88-92 points this year....!

You know you can bet on this.

Last year the Canucks got over 20% of their points in the last 9 games when teams were suddenly the worst in the league ( not tanking for better odds for Dahlin or outright declared "blowing it up") and they barely got over 70 pts, again. If the end of last season reflects how good they are then they should get around 127 pts, if you believe that.

This year may/shall/could be the worst of the last 5 years with 2020 showing marked improvement but it sure would be great to get Alexis Lafrenière. If the Nucks lucked out and got both Hughes and Lafrenière all they would need is a top young dman like McAvoy or Shergachev and maybe trade/sign another "stud" dman that has been there.

Now that would be a team to compete for a cup for 6 years or so, it would take cap management genius to manipulate. 5+ players all getting 10 mil a season, it may be possible depending upon the new CBA and the cap continuing to go up.

we are not a garbage team,  yes he had back surgery but it was not life threatening just a common surgery. he did  rehab all summer . his first game alone proved he was better than some on the team.  why shove him in Utica when he could quite likely make the team . see this is exactly what some on here said about Boeser, put him in Utica  without even playing a game.  Boeser needed no time in Utica!

Not a team full of garbage players, just a team not as good as 29/30 other NHL teams

My guess is, out of the prospects, Pettersson, Leipsic and Goldobin will all make the team out of camp.

Prospects - Pettersson less than 5 NHL games

Leipisic - 6/7 year pro - 3rd pro contract next year

    Goldoblin -  5 year pro

Roussel is just starting his 7th year, is he still a prospect?

I have a feeling that's what's going on too. They played him in a game with the lowest quality of competition, which seems like a bit of a safety net as far as avoiding future injuries. He traveled with the team, probably got to practice and skate with them for extra work to get that conditioning back up.

Conditioning would/should not be a factor, he has been able to do heavy work outs for over 2 months and this procedure had been described as 100% successful.

It is sad and I feel for the kid it wasn't his fault he was drafted #5 with all the expectations that go with being drafted that high. He just peaked in junior.

He was only the 13th ranked dman in the OHL and lower in overall major junior his draft year and even though ranked fairly high in his draft class he was not ranked as high as drafted except on central scouting as a Euro.

His second year of junior after the draft, he was only ranked at #21 in the OHL
