2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
canuckledraggin replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
JB can't take credit for Bo and I was responding to a post about JB, but that is a huge piece to be gifted. Other than that the previous regime left him Hutton from the draft. Growing pains hurt, but this team is going to be a contender in a few years if they stay the course. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
canuckledraggin replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I think he needs another year or even 2 to complete his vision of draft and develop. He inherited this team... https://www.eliteprospects.com/team/77/vancouver-canucks/2013-2014 Then this team somehow makes the playoffs and they realize, we have to get younger. https://www.eliteprospects.com/team/77/vancouver-canucks/2014-2015 Pettersson and Hughes are 1C and 1D and I have faith that Demko is a 1G. Virtanen and Juolevi are good complimentary pieces to go along with late rounders like Gaudette and Madden. Draft and develop is working and I would be upset if someone else came in and started trading away our young talent. The best teams are the ones who grow up together and I wouldn't trade anyone under 24. -
That AHL thing just isn't going to happen. He may have been better served by going to Utica for a conditioning stint, but he made huge gains in Vancouver and proved that flying across the continent to work out in a different gym, would have been a waste of time. If he had a provision in his entry level deal that the AHL was off the table, what would make anyone think that his next deal would be any different? I'm happy to hear that you're pulling for the guy. From most of what I've read in this thread, I thought you were against his return or had written him off. The potential of this guy is off the charts, but we are all just waiting to see what the next phase of his NHL career will look like.

[Speculation] Kapanen in TO available
canuckledraggin replied to Kanukfanatic's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
They already have Zaitsev and Marleau that want out, so that's 10 million right there. They still have Gardiner, Kapanen, Johnsson and Marner to get signed so something has to give. -
[Speculation] Kapanen in TO available
canuckledraggin replied to Kanukfanatic's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There's no risk if TO matches, we just end up screwing over the Leafs and make them pay a million more per year then they ordinarily would have. It's a no lose situation for an offer sheet. Pool party could be had for very little and teams will be smart to take advantage of the Oilers new GM and his willingness to make a deal. -
[Speculation] Kapanen in TO available
canuckledraggin replied to Kanukfanatic's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This will be the year of the offer sheet. I believe that Benning gained favor with Dubas this year with the minor deals they did this season. Either offer him the 2nd it will take to get him in compensation or just offer Kapanen the 4 mill+ that TO likely can't match. He's a top 6 forward for the Canucks and it would be a huge get for us. -
I guess this is the part I don't understand. Why do you feel the need to continually make the same point. During his time in Vancouver it was clear that he altered the way teams played. Teams noticeably avoided his side of the ice, when they saw his reach and scary hitting ability. I'm of the opinion that he was and will be an effective defender at the NHL level. He needs to learn the code of conduct for players in the NHL when it comes to dropping the gloves, but maybe he's afraid that when he drops his mitts and starts blasting someone with a giant hamhock, he is going to re-arrange someones face. There are more questions than answers surrounding this player and that's why this thread persists with very few facts and the rest speculation. The Canucks need this player even with his flaws and need to learn the NHL game. Will he ever play for the Canucks is the one and only question and only time will tell.

Those are amazing comparables. I totally equate small speedy players who thrive on larger ice surfaces with behemoths whose game would be best suited to a net clearing scrum. There's no AHL for this guy. I get that you think that in some way he's pissing on your NHL dream, but he is good enough to play in the NHL. Especially on a Vancouver team, who is looking for physical play from anyone and will likely re-sign Luke Schenn. Who in the league besides Byfuglien can lean on a guy and snap his leg? His physical abilities are good enough, that good coaching will elevate his game. He will likely be a 6/7 to start and work his way up the lineup. He's by no means a finished product, but he's a free asset that the team needs to try to continue to cultivate

CHI wiuns BOO! -
Well now I have to actively cheer for my team to not move up in the draft due to being tied to the Oilers chances

I don't see how that article and the examples in it, flies in the face of what Benning said. With the exception of Boston, who had relatively competitive teams during their rebuilding years, those other teams had to go through a rebuilding phase where they drafted well and then supported those highly skilled players with veteran players. Pittsburgh and Chicago in particular sucked for an extended period and got 1st and 2nd overall picks. The Canucks have seemingly got the most out of their draft position and will be on pace to do the same thing that those other teams did. Making moves through free agency is the way to add to the pool of assets, because they are free assets that can be moved with no real negative consequence. It would be a mistake to shy away from signing those free players, just because they don't always work out. Every contract has inherent risks, but there are enough successes, to make it a desirable tool to supplement the young core that has been built by this management group.

[GDT] Nucks @ Blues -- 1PM -- 06/04/19 -- A New New Hope

Agreed. Not sure what he did to get promoted to the top line in that period. Jake didn't do much, but Spooner did even less. -
[Proposal] Demko for Ristolainen
canuckledraggin replied to aGENT's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'm not sure I follow. You're proposal didn't say anything about that deal happening next year, when you ideally would want a goalie trade to happen. If Markstrom plays the way he did this year, then he gets a deal. If Demko plays around 25 games next season, then you have a better understanding of his abilities and he likely increases his trade value. This isn't a deal you make this summer. -
[Proposal] Demko for Ristolainen
canuckledraggin replied to aGENT's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
No thanks. The ED is the year after next, 2021, not his year. Markstrom has been amazing, but so is the potential of Demko. 8/9 games for Demko has been great for him in the NHL and he is going to come back better next season. Give it a couple years and see where we're at. Trying to accelerate this rebuild would be a mistake. We're going to have a bunch of desirable players for the ED, but I wouldn't give up on Demko for another couple of years. Likewise Virtanen, who everyone in the media is trying to trade. -
Maybe put a playmaker like Goldobin on his wing. Boeser and Pettersson don't need a grinder on their wing, they need someone who can get them the puck. Is it really a strange coincidence that both Goldy and Petey's production dried up as soon as they were separated?

I'm not sure what you're having trouble understanding. Every D-man was healthy scratched for Avto. It was a coaching strategy employed by his team this season. And what does Philip Larsen have to do with anything. Your assertion that since he is in a lesser league, he is a lesser player, also doesn't make any sense. You claim that Gudbranson is a better player, yet they played on the same team for half a season and there wasn't much difference between them. It's getting more and more difficult to take you seriously.
-
It's pretty easy to debunk what you're saying. https://www.eliteprospects.com/team/1724/avtomobilist-yekaterinburg?tab=stats#players 12 D-men got games for Avto this season. 9 were regulars and They were rotated in and out of the lineup on a regular basis. The KHL season is 62 games long and the highest number of games played was 51 by any D-man. Every D was benched on that team and it was well documented during this season.

It really looks like he's afraid to get hit in the face. This off-season he should take some boxing lessons and get into a few sparring sessions where he is legit getting hit in the face. He's not some pretty boy who should be worried about his modelling career. He doesn't have to fight all of the time, but he isn't able to use his hitting effectively if he's worried about getting jumped and potentially getting hit in the face.
-
I was thinking just give him enough of a signing bonus that would cover the cost of his buyout. In any case I doubt he's going to come over next year based on the way his season ended. I could see him feeling like he has unfinished business after his team got bounced so early in the playoffs. Maybe if his team had won the championship he might have seen his time in the KHL as satisfied, but now I'm not so sure.

Needs time to adjust to the speed of the NHL. Therefore play him in the AHL smh. He has played 79 games in the NHL and he's 24 years old. You think the NHL has changed enough in the last 2 years that he forgot how to play?
