I could put you under a thousand watt bulb and I still think you'd be in the dark. The main thing is confidence for him. He's going to the scoring areas lately and being rewarded. Before his game was timid and on the perimeter. He is skating harder and playing harder. Dahlen's progression is very similar. Compare the goals he scored in Sweden to the goals he is scoring now and he is always stuck to a post or getting into the goalies crease. He's not a big guy, but he puts himself in position to score a deflection or tap-in.

1st the kayak and then reeling in the fish. He's got the game and he has the cellies. You have to love this prospect.

Yeah my bad. I don't know what got into me. Oh wait yes I do. It was beers. many many beers.
-
During our injury stretch it was all about the "next man up" philosophy. This guy is the next man up in my books.

You would have taken Pastrnak at 6? STFU. Nobody seems to mention that we took McCann at 24 and Pastrnak went at 25. Evaluating 18 year olds is difficult. It's not like any other draft.

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
canuckledraggin replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Ok but you can understand it though. This is a prospects thread for Canucks forum. When the Comets were struggling it was all about management and how they were a hindrance to the success of the Comets. Where are those same people now that the team is in a playoff spot and improving? Those people have gone silent and should be served up platters of crow. No not everyone deserves to be lumped into that category, but we as Canucks fans are well within our rights to call them out. -
He's a fringe NHL'r so why not be with us? I don't think the Canucks have given up on him just yet, but it's a bonus to have him in the minors and off of the radar of other teams. Believe it or not. 24 year olds can improve in the minors. He's a leader on the ice and in the dressing room and he makes the Comets better.
-
Who knew? It takes some players longer than 40 games into their rookie year as a pro to figure out how to play at the next level. There is a big chunk of this thread that is going to look ridiculous by next year. The same applies to Dahlen, Gadjovich and the Utica Comets 18/19 threads.

Yeah I can connect those dots. They traded Del Zotto for a roster spot to avoid having to make a decision on one of the players on the bubble ie Schaller, Biega or Goldobin.
-
He's still interesting, because he has the skillset to be a playmaker and his 7% shooting percentage is the anomaly and not the rule. The Del zotto trade was an endorsement of Goldy, in that they aren't wiling to give up on him just yet and they'd likely have to waive him, since he hasn't garnered any trade action. You have to give this guy at least until the end of the season to find his game. He's an immature guy who can become a better player just by getting older and more mature. Hutton and Virtanen are perfect examples.
-
It's easy to say after the fact, but that partial breakaway at the end of regulation was so good and he just needed to get the puck over the pad. Shots along the ice are few and far between with the quality of goalies in the NHL.
-
He has matured lots as a player. I listened to his mic'd up and I'm even more impressed with his game. https://www.nhl.com/canucks/video/micd-up--hutton-vs-oilers/c-65015803

Everything you say is perfectly true, right until the last sentence. Boeser played 2 years in the NCAA. His rookie year was magic and even battling through injury during his 2nd year, it was clear that he was going to come into the NHL and be a star with his laser beam of a shot. Pettersson showed that he was a star in the SHL by breaking historic rookie scoring records and being the MVP of the league and the playoff winning golden boy. Hughes is in his 2nd year in the NCAA. He is the best player on his team and his skating and puck control is ridiculously good. If you're watching and you know what you're looking at, you can come to an educated guess as to what a player will become. Lind and the other prospects taken in the 2nd round and beyond are going to take longer to develop. Expectations for Hughes are high, but they absolutely should be based on his skillset and actual play.

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
canuckledraggin replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
But that's exactly what they have been doing in Utica. You can say play the kids all you want, but if they aren't ready and playing well, you run the risk of absolutely shattering their confidence, which may take even more time to repair. Dahlen, Gadjovich and Lind are all playing better and getting better minutes recently as a result. Palmu was the overage late round pick, who was seemingly the odd man out with so many rookies in the lineup, but now he's playing bigger minutes with Kakko. Adding Pyatt, Leighton and Schenn will help out the prospects even more and now the Comets are on a trajectory to make some noise in the Calder playoffs. -
How about TOI? that's an important stat. Could I get a link to your source? ty. Yep Larsen is Tryamkin. Amazing comparison.

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread

So Utica fans Leighton for McKenna. Would you do it? -
I think Tryamkin is that guy. When he sees what this team has become he is going to want to come back here. He didn't want to suffer through the losing years, but I don't hold it against him. If he comes back to this team in a couple years, he is going to be a game changer for this team. They will need the type of physical play he brings to replace a worse version of himself in Gudbranson.

For a full season. Apparently he would call Jake in for training sessions after games and late at night to jump on the bike and ride. JV was given extra attention the way he is giving to Goldobin currently. Green is an exceptional coach, because he knows what it takes to get to the show. How about that Tyler Madden though. I had to check to see which thread I was in. Madden has the added bonus of being the son of an NHL'r. I always thought those legacy players whose fathers played in the league, always have a leg up, because they are getting NHL training from an early age.

Regardless it's going to be a fun team to watch. You're assuming we won't make the playoffs and win the lottery, but Petey has the ability to wear this team like a knapsack and take them to places that they never should have been. I wouldn't spend the money it would take to get Karlsson, because EP40 is going to command a huge salary in a couple years. Just keep swinging for the fences at the draft and build a team the way Winnipeg has. Sure and steady wins the race.

Subjective rankings from failed GM's and prognosticators mean very little when it comes to players actually playing. I can't wait to see him play in the NHL and turning players inside out.
-
he explains it a bit today. Can't wait to see him doing the full splits in an NHL crease. https://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1040/demko-good-to-get-plenty-of-practice-time-ready-for-this-step-1.1242059

Mikey 19 going on 29. https://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1040/dipietro-want-to-win-a-cup-in-vancouver-but-don-t-want-to-rush-process-1.1242048

He's getting better though. I don't see him getting scratched as much in the 2nd half of the season as he was in the 1st half. AKA progression and development.
-
I'm trying to understand what you're saying. You think that Jensen, Subban and Corrado were actual NHL talent who were just mistreated and coaching was the main problem with their development? And it's pointless to talk about current prospects who are showing progress, because previous failures are indicators of future failures. There are only a few prospects on every AHL team who have a chance of making their NHL teams. It's not exclusively a Utica Comets/Canucks franchise development concern. Some players may push themselves to become better than their raw talent would indicate, like a Burrows or a Hansen. And some players seem to have the tools to succeed, yet don't make it to the show. I think it's worth noting that we have developed coaches as well as players. AV, Green and now Cull are all 1st time pro head coaches with the franchise. I see more successes than failures if you're looking at the big picture.
-
You're m Because your claim is that our AHL franchise isn't capable of developing successes. If they had the talent to make it in the NHL then surely they were just mishandled by our franchise. There are zero examples of players who were cut from the Comets, who went on to have successes with other teams. How you could have Kassian, Hodgson and Tryamkin on your list, makes your argument even more flimsy than it already was. Gadjovich looked good tonight. If MacEwen doesn't get a look in the NHL this season, I'd consider that a failure, but he is still in the system. Lind and Dahlen are taking steps in the right direction as rookies and Brisebois, Sautner, McEneny and Chatfield all have the potential to play games as D-men in the NHL at some point. Palmu is one of the players who might just slip through the cracks, but it's way to early to make that determination yet.
