Shoots like Boeser.

I don't know what they should do with Bachman, maybe send him to Alaska instead of Garteig. I think that those 2 would be a great tandem in Utica to push each other. It was a great move to have them rooming together and they look like they have instant chemistry. I'd much rather see Rollie get his hands on both of these guys at the same time when they're still learning the technical side of the game. I liked the Bachman signing after what he did against the Comets in the playoffs, but watching him play for a full season changed my opinion. He's just way too small and if he isn't standing on his head making the acrobatic save, he isn't effective enough. I can see Thatcher stealing the net from him right out of training camp.

I would put the chances at slim but not 0% If he were to show the ability to take a bump and prove that he could skate and think his way out of trouble, there might be a spot that could be made for him. I was amazed by what Hutton showed last year. I think people are going to be surprised when we actually get to see him play. Sbisa is the odd man out if that were to happen and I'm excited to see Tryamkin turn this defense on it's ear. I hate tanknation and I think we are far from in need of a sell off to appease a small segment of fans.

Yep. He's already into books before that tourney.

McKeens seems to be the only list that had him at 5, but rankings don't take team need into consideration. Canucks are in need of a 1st line LW and C as well as a top pairing PMD. Benning decided that the D-man was the right call for this draft. In hindsight I think he did the right thing after the centerman he wanted was taken. 1C is going to be our white whale, but at least we took a cerebral D-man who has a chance of becoming a #1D. London is the best minor league organization to draft a defenseman from, because they play a much more pro game than any other team. Juolevi doesn't put up the same numbers as other defenders like Sergachev, but he also doesn't put himself out of position. He is already playing a pro game and playing it at a very high level.

Boeser has a chance of paying it forward to Jost, who is hopefully his centerman this year. If those 2 can find chemistry, they could put up great numbers this year.

This makes the draft order even more curious. It makes me wonder whether Benning made a serious offer to get to 3 or if Columbus just felt like Dubois wouldn't be there at pick 5. If we took the Hartnell contract and probably could have got Rychel too considering he wanted out, for the 5th,their 2nd rounder back and another pick or prospect, why wouldn't Columbus jump on that? It must have been the What if factor of Edmonton taking Dubois at 4. Benning's list was Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, Dubois, Juolevi, Tkachuk. So we got the player where he was ranked and I think it could be the best thing in the long run. I really think that he will become a #1, but even if he's only a #2, it's still 2A and a perfect compliment to Tanev.

He remembers when Salo got a puck to the nuts as a Canuck. He also remembered the 2011 run because fellow scandanavians the Sedins were involved The Lumme Salo Juolevi connection is going to turn into a big deal imo. His eyes are always looking up ice.

Wait. What? You actually like something? What a great day this must be for you.

The Knights under Dale Hunter are very structured. It isn't really a surprise not to see crazy points totals from him, because he's already playing a pro game. He doesn't put himself out of position and always has his head up. He also plays in every situation PK and PP. That's everything you want from a D-man. I wouldn't say we drafted for position, but given the free agent market and our own prospect pool, it was an excellent choice with Dubois off of the board.

If he goes back to London he's a leader on that team and they likely have a great season again next year. Playing in the AHL would speed up his development and give him a good headstart to his pro career. It's a win either way, but I'd most like to see him in Utica under coach Green. Travis has a way of getting the most out of his players and Baumgartner & Green coaching this kid would be too good to pass up.

I just watched that vid with the volume cranked and it was much more exciting The other 2... not so much, but it was cool to see him playing with Schroeder and Tanev. From the video that I`ve seen, which are admittedly highlights, he seems to have found his game. That speed and shot are going to put him in Benning`s lineup next season.

Here's the dark horse for the Canucks this year. A 2nd round pick from 2009 that seems to have finally put his game together. League MVP last year and captain for Brynas IF. Great speed and shot with a nose for the net. My only concern would be his backchecking, but he was a + player this year, which suggests he has taken that final step in becoming a solid 2-way player. I know putting him in the same breath as Naslund is hyperbole, but he looks just like him. Training camp is going to be fun.

No. There are plenty of later round picks that have high ceilings, but the reason that they slide down the rankings is they don't have the floor. The players that go early have a better chance to make it based on the assumption that they are good enough to play in the NHL and may reach their ceiling. The later round picks are given less of a chance to make the NHL at all in their hockey career, but may still reach their ceiling and outperform players that were taken ahead of them.

I couldn't disagree more with the last 3 posts. Markstrom is the real deal and he is set for a big raise, but I would be amazed and disappointed if they re-signed Miller. Why wouldn't you just give Miller's salary, or a portion of it, to Markstrom? Marky has already proven that he is better than Miller, who is on the backside of his career. Maybe down the road we trade Markstrom, but not until Demko works his way into the league.

Nice vid. There's a Benning on his team and one of the most epic hockey names I've ever seen...Saucerman.

The fact that people are identifying his potential ceiling as a top pairing D-man is such a bonus for the team. The real test for #88 will be, can he slow the game down and get his decision making ability to the level of a top pairing guy. His skating is great, his physicality is great, his range at defending is great, his shot is hard and accurate but he needs to shoot more. His passing will need to improve. It's the one thing that will elevate his game once he gets used to the speed of the NHL. He made lots of excellent plays last year in clearing the zone, but there were lots of times when simply whacking the puck out of the zone wasn't the best play. I can understand not wanting to get caught in his own zone, but there were lots of times where the puck hit his stick and there was no thought of making a play, just making the quick play to get it out of the zone. If and hopefully when the game slows down for him to make that quick outlet pass, he has that top pairing potential. I watched enough Avto games last year to see his potential as a powerplay specialist as well. Not from the point but in front of the net. He simply can't be moved when he decides to camp out in the crease. His ceiling is Byfuglien if you ask me and that's as close to a #1 as you can get.

I wouldn't allow any of our waiver ineligible players to make the Canucks this year. Unless Larsen proves that he is a complete dud and Pedan proves that he just can't compete at the next level, it doesn't make sense to have Stech on the team out of training camp. Canucks used 10 D last year and 11 the year before. The defense is thin enough in Utica without denying them those young prospects that can be called upon when injuries happen. Canucks used 36 players and Comets used 49. For that reason alone, I would put all of our prospects in the AHL. McCann and Virtanen most notably, and players like Biega and Grenier and possibly Vey will likely clear waivers so I would sign and waive them. Biega is still under contract for another year but his numbers weren't great and teams aren't going to give a spot to an undersized guy on the fringe of the NHL. Hutton and Tryamkin have turned this defense on it's ear. A pair that came out of nowhere that gives the team more options and makes sending players to the minors a much easier decision.

Is he playing tomorrow?

Way to get right back to him on that. 3 weeks later you decided to lip him off? You upset about something?
-
What`s left to say until he comes to camp? He sparks a debate about whether he projects as an NHL D-man and our depth at defense. That's about all you have to talk about at this point until we see him with the team. I didn't see you contribute anything... I guess my question is will he attend development camp? He is a bit older, but his relationship with Boeser and wanting to get him in the mix with our young guys and put him in a leadership role, would lead me to believe he does. Not sure if that has been answered, but that's about all I could think of that directly relates to Stecher.
-
I see it like this too. Everyone thinking that Biega would get claimed are failing to realize that the other 29 teams have prospects PTOs and returning players to sort through before they start looking at other teams' depth guys. I think he gets waived early and becomes the Comets captain again for next year, so that he can continue to mentor the young guys like Subban and Stetcher.
