  1. ^ Or he could just play on the Canucks when he comes over. It's a bit pre-mature to be projecting whats going to happen several months from now when his KHL contract expires. Would he accept a deal that paid him a minor league salary to play in the AHL for a month or so? It's possible. Are the Canucks going to need another D-man at that time due to injury? Possibly. Does he just want to stay in his home country and play for Rubles? Also possible.
  2. You're both saying the same thing...You can't tell anything from 2 exhibition games. Oh wait. There are people that thought the tournament was over this weekend?
  3. It's debatable, but I don't doubt that it's going to happen. I'd be surprised if they weren't stars in the league in a few years.
  4. 1 When you continuously sh!t on a player that is playing far beyond his draft position...then yes; you are unaware of his potential. 2 JV is a power forward who claims that his favorite player is Rick Nash. Even if he became a fraction of what Nash is, he is a good pick. 3 This is the single greatest knock on this pick. He was taken 6th overall and we should have taken Nylander or Ehlers. Those are the 2 that keep being brought up...are there others? Here is why point number 3 is irrelevant and makes it nonsense when you analyze the 2014 draft. We drafted McCann #24 in 2014. McCann is the Canadian equivalent of Nylander and you can easily argue that he is already better because he is already putting up numbers in the NHL as opposed to the AHL. Did we get lucky with McCann? Sure. Was putting JV into the NHL at age 19 a mistake? Nope. Will Willie Nylander and Nik Ehlers become star players in the league? Yep almost certainly.
  5. Q. Should he have been given a shot in the NHL as a 19 year old? A. Absolutely. Now he knows what it means to compete in the NHL and he wouldn't have been able to experience that if he didn't have the physical tools. Q. Should he stay in the NHL after the WJC tournament. A. IMO no. I think that he should be given the chance to become a leader on his junior team and possibly play in the AHL or become a black ace. Q. Can Grenier or Jensen step into that RW role that Jake was given? A. 100% that was a determining factor in keeping jake from the start. Jensen and Grenier have proven that they are capable of filling a RW spot in the bottom 9.
  6. So he's in the top 4 is what you're saying? Lu was and remains the best goaltender that the Canucks have ever seen and the Sedins are without a doubt the best forwards that the Canucks have ever seen. Seems like good company to be in as a 19 year old...
  7. Wait! You have him on YOUR ignore list?! That's some funny sh!t right there.
  8. OK curious then... who has generated more of a response from fans than this kid? If the internet was around in 1999 the way it is today, I would admit that those chubby little Sedin boys would have received an overwhelming degree of attention. But seriously this thread grows 2 or 3 pages everyday and it has no signs of slowing down.
  9. Without a doubt the most polarizing Canucks draft pick and player of all time and he turned 19 four months ago. JV has turned into John Cena. Let's go Cena! Cena sucks! Carry on. 600 pages is only a few days away
  10. I'm not so sure that they would feel the same way if they watched the way he played tonight. I'm not saying that he should only play center from now on, but it's better to have the option of a LW/C than just a LW. As far as I know this was his 1st game back at center since he turned pro and he didn't look out of place or slow at all. Actually he was the best player on the ice for either team.
  11. Well considering he scored a goal within his 1st few shifts, I'd say the adjustment period would be short We're not talking about a natural LW converting to center. His defense might take a bit to catch up, but he is one of our smartest players. As far as hockey IQ I put him at the top of the list of prospects.
  12. I'm equally perplexed by people who feel that he couldn't or shouldn't go back to his natural position. It's pretty clear that we have a pretty shallow talent pool at center. LW is not any better, but why wouldn't you want a player has that versatility? Oh and btw Gaunce is playing center tonight between Shinkaruk and Grenier and just scored a beauty off a nice feed from Shink.
  13. when I hear things like this from yourself, Dingle...I mean Gooseberries, The 5th line, et al. I know that I'm definitely on the right track.
  14. At this point in his development, it's really hard to predict what management will do with him after the WJC is finished. If I'm management I would be looking at his WJC performance as an audition for the rest of the season. On the one hand, Calgary is likely to be a playoff team. Even though they aren't likely to go far in the playoffs, it might be a good test to see if he can be a difference maker on a bubble team that he knows and could use his presence. On the other hand the Canucks don't have a lot of depth and you have to weigh him against his replacements in Utica if he were taken from the roster. Are Jensen and Grenier able to step up and take that spot. In my mind this team is fine without him and they have done a great job by exposing him to the NHL at an early age. It's an amazing opportunity that for consecutive seasons Jake is once again able to play in several leagues and an all-star tournament.
  15. I agree with this 100% It would be a waste to put him in the bottom 6 this time around. As for McCann he should be going, because the team is hovering around .500, we have players in Utica that can easily fill his role on the team, and he deserves to put the team Canada jersey on. The team will not suffer with these 2 out of the lineup and the potential boost to their performance and confidence is certainly worth losing them from the team for a couple of weeks. It's also likely that they could play on the 2nd line together in this tournament, which sounds like another huge added bonus. Another thing that I hope Benning is looking at is the leadership aspect of sending these guys. Most of Bennings picks have worn a letter at some point in their careers and it almost seems like a prerequisite. In a room full of leaders, those 2 would have an advantage, because of their association with each other and the NHL.
  16. At the beginning of the season Green was asked if he would consider moving Gaunce back to center and he said sure. I definitely wouldn't right him off from ever playing center again and from the state of our depth at center, I would suggest that it's probably a good idea to explore that option right about now. If we were to call a center up from Utica, then it would be a perfect time to slide Gaunce back to his natural position and see what he's learned. Gaunce was always a good centerman and I always thought that the move to LW was temporary. It just seemed like a good way to teach a player with a high IQ how to play a more north south game.
  17. This thread is both comical and headscratchingly stupid. So Benning put Jake on the team to save face, because he was going to have less points in jr. this year? Makes sense. So what? You're 2nd point is pretty lazy. I'm supposed to fill in the blank after you compare him to a 30 goal scorer. I don't think you realize how difficult it is to score goals in the NHL. ...we will continue to see how he develops. Finished that thought for ya. Is it possible to send Jake to Utica for conditioning and then straight to the world jrs? I think those would be huge opportunities for him. Then the 39 game mark becomes tied to the decision to send him to juniors, because Jan. 4 is game 40 and he'd be in Finland. If I'm Benning I send him and look at his performance as an audition for the 2nd half of the season.
  18. ^^ There's a strange thing that happens when I'm watching the game and one of our young players jumps over the boards. I end up having my eyes glued to that player and just follow him all over the ice. When it's a veteran line and I'm really not analyzing anyone's play, I'm back to following the puck around and watching the play. Does anyone else do this? I'm just wondering why people being so hyper-critical of his mistakes, when they really haven't cost the team games or even goals for that matter. When I see him in the defensive zone hovering around doing little circles in the high slot, he's playing his position. If he was to put himself out of position and go charging down into the corner, then he runs the risk of getting caught . If the puck gets past him to the D-man at the blueline then that's a blown assignment and his man is going to have a wide open shot from the point. For all of the crap I see him taking, I think he's playing a smart simple game and I think people are expecting to see something different. If I compare it to watching Horvat last year, I see a very similar style of play. There were times during the 1st half of the season last year, when I would watch Horvat and I could swear his line was on the ice, but he wouldn't even be in view of the camera. He would be out in the neutral zone making sure he was backing up his linemates. Granted Bo had tougher assignments playing center, but I still see the similarities. In many ways I think JV is ahead of where Bo was this time last year.
  19. You have no idea what everyone thinks. I am in disagreement with your opinion. It happens and I think it's folly to try to keep insisting on this course. I have disagreed with everything that you have said in this thread. It's ok. We're allowed to disagree. You prefer to live in 2014 and believe that somehow our draft picks were failures, even though they are currently playing in the NHL. I understand your position, I just don't agree with it.
  20. Sure there's a difference, but with our 2 picks in the 1st round of the 2014 draft we drafted 2 players that filled organizational needs. We drafted a power forward type scoring winger and a 2-way center to eventually take over the spot that Kesler left. Once the draft is over it doesn't matter. We will never agree on this point.
  21. I had to keep reading after reading that bolded statement. It was somewhat tame after that, but the essence and continuing sentiment is that we should have drafted Nylander. We get it. You're allowed to go on with your life now. Our picks were truly terrible since the Sedins, with a few outliers , but And I disagree with everything you say. We're never going to agree on anything, because you approach the world from a negative viewpoint. It doesn't matter a hide nor a hair where we drafted the player that is 19 and playing for the Canucks. As I provided the link in a previous post, there are 14 players that are playing in the NHL from that draft. If he wasn't able to play in the NHL then he would never have played even 1 game. You think that he could become a better player by playing in junior, but I think that he is going to learn the NHL game by playing minutes in the NHL.
  22. I'm perfectly relaxed Maybe even too much so But my point will persist. It most certainly does not matter in the slightest where you drafted a player beyond draft day. After that day the player becomes the property of your team and all of the players taken behind him are 'what if's'. Who gives a sh!t about a 'what if'? It has no basis in reality. You're literally living in a fantasy world when you try to analyze it from that perspective.
  23. How exactly? This is the most perplexing thing about Jake and the most polarizing aspect from fans and critics alike. Why in the fluck does it matter where we drafted him? You're living in a fantasy world and can't let go of the 2014 draft. It's over. Move on to the next chapter of your life with Jake Virtanen on the Canucks, because that is reality.
  24. So if we had taken Jared 6th and Jake 24th would you whiners be happier? It doesn't matter where they were drafted. The fact is that the Canucks drafted them and they are our players. The rebuild is sped up by a year by putting these guys in the lineup this year. B!tch some more please I can't wait to read your next diatribe.
  25. ^^ Wow. Some of you posters are astonishingly stupid if you think that you peek mentally at age 19. You will never learn anything or be able to gain any knowledge past a certain age? So you're basically just born with all of the intuition and knowledge that you'll ever need during your life time and it's pure folly to try to teach one of these inferior humans? And really after the draft is over and the players have signed with the organization, it doesn't matter where he was drafted. There are currently 14 or so players that are 19 and playing in the NHL this year in their draft +2 seasons. http://www.eliteprospects.com/draft.php?year=2014 We have 2 of them in our lineup and people are still wringing their hands and living and dying by every play that these guys make. Face facts. Jake is our draft pick and we're going to have him in our lineup for a very long time. He is not a liability defensively or giving up goals while he is sitting in the penalty box on a consistent basis. If he was costing (<---not a word) the team in a tangible way like this, then he wouldn't even be able to crack the lineup. I agree that he needs to tighten up his game where dumb penalties are concerned, but that doesn't make him a dumb person and unable to learn a new strategy or change his game. In reality this thread should be about 200 pages long, but the same 6 people keep coming here and posting the same sh!t over and over and over again. At this point everything you say is redundant and I find it difficult to respond to the persistent negativity, but every so often I feel the need to try to talk some sense into you 'glass half empty' types.
