  1. ^^That? really? News flash for ya. We can't use a similar route with Jake, because he wasn't drafted out of Europe or the USHL. If he was then sure I would completely agree that his development path should have taken him through the AHL. We're rebuilding people. This year and next year, when Gaunce, Shinkaruk and Grenier are likely to make the team, will be bumpy rides. Hang on tight and put your mouthguard in.
  2. Benning has used the words mean streak to describe NT. He's big and nasty and looks like a Benning guy. I said this before, that I think Pedan signing was a direct result of getting Tryamkin. With another Russian in the system, it may entice him into coming over sooner than he may have otherwise. It's nice to see some Russian talent being considered, instead of the Burke and Gillis years, where it was never an option. Benning is definitely playing chess, whereas all the armchair GM's are playing checkers.
  3. I'll do it! My trash talk is on par with Burrows b!tches.
  4. Where Baertschi is lacking is in his ability to slow the game down. He's very quick to give up the puck and tries to make the quick play, but sometimes he has a lot more time than he realizes and needs to do a bit more stickhandling instead of sending high risk passes. It's a fine line between giving the puck away and making a nice pass and I think that he's becoming a better player in the NHL. Gaudreau is really his closest comparison and it's no wonder that Calgary didn't want both of them on their team, but it's our good fortune if Sven is able to become the same kind of elusive possession player. Also he needs to shoot more , because he is deadly accurate, whether it's a pass or a shot.
  5. The sphincter vs. the nugget gameshow has concluded. We declare the winner to be the Nugget. Congratulations on being the nugget and best wishes on being the nugget in the future.
  6. So you're always skeptical to the point of being a self professed "hater" So that if a player fails, you can say 'see I told you so'. And the people that are praising his play are just setting themselves up for criticism at some later date when he's in a slump?... Sounds rational.
  7. ^ He's not ever going to be the player that you want him to be, because he was the 6th overall pick. Who gives a $h!T where we drafted him as long as he's capable of playing in our lineup. The truth is that he is capable of playing for the Canucks and if the coaches would let him off his leash, he would be the same beast of a player every night. Ehlers is great, but we already have a Vrbata on this team and you can't have too many of those squishy players on your team at the same time or you're gonna be the Oilers of the past decade. Tonight was his worst game by far and he still deserved to play over any other RW that we have in the system. Get over your Virtanen hate. The kid is going to be here for a long time, so you might as well get used to it.
  8. Go look up games played, TOI, quality of linemates, quality of competition, hits, goals, assists and all that corsi crap. And you still won't have a clue about who the better player is for a couple of years. Making assertions about 19 year olds after a handful of games does deserve an epic facepalm.
  9. I had no idea that we would ever have something in common. As I posted above, there really is nobody that can come in and steal their jobs...Accelerate the rebuild or retool or whatever you want to call it and Benning said last year that 3-5 would make it. I'm sure Clendenning was in there over Hutton, but now the 5 have become Markstrom, Hutton, Baertschi, McCann and Virtanen. I'm sure they were impressed that they got to take an extended look at the 19 year olds... Vey, Jensen, Shinkaruk are going to play in the NHL as well, but it's not their turn yet. I think if you put the feet to the fire of Shink and Gaunce, that you might see those two bubble to the surface as well. We have the greatest number of legitimate prospects that we've ever had and there's going to be some serious decisions to be made. I can't argue with the speed approach to the game. Speed kills in every sport and we finally have a speedy backchecking style that's going to be successful. I put zero stock in what we see in the early going. It's going to be fun to watch the pacific, because the Ducks are making it interesting.
  10. This is the most intelligent thing that you've posted and I agree that he and McCann need to get more minutes before we know what type of players that we have in these 2. We still don't have a clue what they are capable of, because of their deployment. I don't blame WD, he's trying to protect these kids, but after hearing his comments on the radio today, it sounds like he is ready to give them a bigger role. http://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1040-i-1410/desjardins-we-always-like-to-roll-4-lines-1.381661 If you look at the team, both of the kids are given spots under the 23 man roster. Higgins comes back and probably takes Baertschi's spot on LW and if you want to replace one of the kids you need a RW and/or a Center from Utica, to come up. Vey is the obvious choice for C. Green has been playing him lots and he had a nice snipe last game, but he's already in the minors. In my mind you leave him there as long as you can, because he's not an upgrade over McCann. Jensen and Grenier are the choices for RW. So then you have to decide whether either of those players are better than Jake. In my estimation they are all equal in skill , but Jake is more physical. If your worried about burning a year from the ELC, there's always the argument that it doesn't matter as much, because they won't be putting up big numbers, therefore they won't demand as much come their next contract negotiation. I feel as though the succession plan is to put the kids in now and speed up the rebuild by a year or 2. When you have leaders like the Sedins on your team, you want to get your top prospects with them early and often.
  11. The beauty of developing Jake is his ability to move up and down the lineup and play in different roles. Regardless of where he slots in, he's going to look to lay a big hit and rip the puck on net. He can do that anywhere from the 2nd to the 4th line. When he starts to work his way up the lineup will be when he starts to develop chemistry with certain linemates and plays start to come together, that result in points. Conditioning will also be a factor. He's basically the right wing version of Bo, and not many people have a problem with his development do they? From 4th to 2nd in a year is a realistic goal for Jake too.
  12. More silliness about this guy leaving the Canucks for the Wild eh? I don't think that he will, because I think that he will make the Canucks roster before he finishes school and will look at making his money playing hockey while he's young. The other reason I think it's tripe, is that the Wild picked 20th and didn't take Brock. The kid just comes off as too humble and loyal to pull a stunt like that.
  13. I've seen the he looked lost comments a few times now and I agree with the posters above that he was playing decent positionally. I do agree that he comes to a complete stop in some situations and that he should maybe stay on the move a little more, but when he needs to start skating he goes like he's been shot out of a cannon anyways, so it's not a big deal. I'd be more worried if he was chasing and getting into other peoples lanes. Even with an empty net last night he didn't go crazy trying to over pursue and get an easy goal, he backed off and kept the play in front of him.
  14. That's a ridiculous notion. So Sbisa is SO bad that Hutton should be playing in the AHL? Who on the Comets is better, that he should be learning from? Not to mention he makes Sbisa better. So while his development might be taking a bit of a hit as you suggest, he's making a liability in Sbisa better. Coaching and video analysis are at another level in the NHL. He's going to need to learn situations and positioning regardless of who his partner is, because he's a rookie in any situation. He's proving every game why he deserves to be in this line-up
  15. ^ I'm convinced. You can stop posting now. You win the thread.
  16. Laughing at you for pretending that you thought that you knew this Even Hutton himself admitted that he had no idea.
  17. ^ 1. Yep he takes too many penalties, but you don't want to stifle his physical play. We will have one of the best penalty kills in the league yet again and our PK may actually have gotten better this year. 2. He's still noticeably one of the fastest players on the ice and his backcheck is good. 3. He keeps his shifts short and doesn't get caught out there on rubber legs.
  18. The beauty of this conversation is that Gaunce has shown that he took a giant leap forward in only one year as a pro and appears to be ready to make the jump to the NHL, either this year or next. There's going to be some serious competition in Utica now and I really hope Gaunce gets time back at center to push for that 4C position on the Canucks.
  19. Horvat said after the game: "I hope this line is together for a long time." What Bo wants, Bo gets. I hope these guys can have another good performance and take the decision out of coaching/ management's hands. Nothing could be better for Virtanen's development than if Bo could tuck him under his wing and show him the ropes. It sounds funny with them being less than a couple years apart, but Bo already has that level of leadership.
  20. I've posted this video a couple times from training camp last year, showing these guys working on their skating. The foot speed is there for both and it's really hard to tell them apart. It's apparent this is the biggest thing they continue to work on.
  21. I can understand the argument that 'we just want him to play' but in this case, for this player, I just don't feel the same way as I would if he was softer, slower and lacking in confidence. I just don't see how you're going to "ruin" him if he doesn't play every game. I just finished watching the media day interviews and it was Prust with JV as the final pair. Why do you think JV would be given that spot if he wasn't already being given a spot on the team? There are victims of circumstance and there are fortunes of circumstance, and in this case Jake is fortunate that he is a 19 year old in a man's body and he plays the game well enough not be sent back to junior.
  22. I'm curious as to what you think the benefits of returning to junior would be for JV this year? Ice time is the obvious one. He'd get top line minutes and hopefully find improved scoring. Also we wouldn't burn a year off his ELC. On the NHL side he gets world class training and can possibly get stronger and faster. The team has it's own chef so it's more likely he's eating the right way. Both of those factors are the reason Bo got faster and bigger last year. Then there's the coaching. If you want him to stop the bad habits he's acquired in junior, going back to junior is not the way to fix them. The current Canucks are filled with a bunch of 2-way players that can show JV the right way to play the game first hand. I'm not worried about him not playing every game either. I think he'd learn more in a Canuck's practice than a Hitmen game. Being at home might be a distraction for him, but it's just as likely that with a support system behind him, he doesn't struggle living away from home in his first year of pro. To me all signs point to the NHL.
  23. Haters don't log on to eat crow. They duck and dodge and wait for a convenient time to take a cheap shot and then they're gone again. JV comes as advertised and he's ahead of schedule, because he is already physically mature. Some people are just born with it. Recently we've seen Mckinnon Monahan Ekblad etc., they join crap teams straight from the draft and they have the NHL game right off the hop. It's great to have these physically superior players step into roles that would probably take them a few years to grow into. Horvat and Virtanen at #9 and #6 have put us on the path to recovery in short order. It basically speeds up the rebuild by putting the young players in the lineup. I'm not saying the team we drafted is going to be the team that takes us to the next level... we may end up sucking for a while, but at this point that has to be the plan. You win or lose with what you got and now is the time to get young.
  24. OMG Ehlers! Butt dat Ehlers doh. Isn't Ehlers the most bestest hockey player you had ever seen in your hole life!
