Investing in the stock market - Discussion

If this guy is telling you that your money is basically not worth his time because its not large enough... Time to GTFO... A decent adviser would not treat a client like this no matter the amount invested. Its not like he is a hedge fund manager... As for the bolded it is definitely something that your adviser should have discussed further with you. In up markets everyone has a high risk tolerance its when the markets fall that the true tolerance is discovered. ETFs or MFs may be the way to go as you will definitely not see the losses you would with individual securities (on the flip side nor the huge gains) but it may be worth the peace of mind. That said, they are long term investments that you should be prepared to hold for years to see the benefit. There are not quick bucks made of mutual funds or ETFs. -

Depends on the fund actually. Most are actively managed but there are index funds that are passive and just track the market (expect a return to trail the market by the MER though). I would not look at those as they are more expensive than an EFT for pretty much the same thing. If looking for decent MFs that have a pretty good track record in beating benchmarks in a sector that usually trails market returns, I would check out RBC Global Asset Management (specifically their suite of PH&N funds) or Mawer. Both have very low fees compared to the industry average. The only thing to remember is that MFs are long term investments for the most part and should not be traded like individual securities as that is a sure way to lose money. -
While i definitely do not like the Oilers and cant say im unhappy about their current situation. They do have 5 championship banners hanging from the rafters while we will, shortly, surpass 50 years of nothing....

Canada should just follow their old ways and buy some used British Sopwith Camels and then we can humor our adversaries into submission.

Now i am one that does believe that man has contributed to accelerating climate change (not solely of course) but i dont agree with this: "The opponents argue that the heavy Canadian tar sands oil the replacement will carry will accelerate climate change" I dont see how anyone can think it is better to leave the old existing cracked pipeline that is definitely more of a danger.

Absolutely they know who is behind this but they wont punish the US for it while trying to negotiate a trade deal thats for sure. Canada may get hammered though but that the price of of helping (being played by) your neighbor. As the old saying goes; nice guys finish last.

There are rumors that Huawei's upper management (which would include the CFO) were putting corporate interest above that of the Country (China) and it has ruffled some feathers in Beijing. Remember she is not that close with her Father (who is close with Xi) who didnt really support either of his kids running the company. I find it odd that a woman with such means and definite knowledge of the US warrant would take the chance of stopping in a country with an extradition treaty. And one would have to think the Chinese government would have warned her about stopping in Vancouver. I think there is more to this than just the violation of sanctions.

Only as much as the US permits. If there were ever a request the US didn’t like they would ignore it and we’d be SOL

Everyone needs war everyone!

Extradition treaty.. The US pretty much just has to make the request (providing reasons of course) and we have to follow. I believe that Belgium extradited someone affiliated with ZTE or Huwaei to the US earlier in the year for similar reasons (contravening sanctions against Iran)

Well with Carvana, I think it popped a bit too high to quick when it rose to $70 as investors flooded in. I think the worry is mainly with other companies entering the market now that they see a somewhat successful model. Really i would only be worried about giants with the technology platform (such as Amazon) trying to encroach in the near future. I do believe it is a bit overblown though and Carvana does have the advantage being the first one with this model. They are a very young company and early in the growth stage so it is expected to see volatility and a negative EPS like this. I think you are still good with your position long term as their revenue is trending up and although $70 would have been a good exit position but hindsight is always 20/20. Next big market driver for them will be Nov 29 with their analyst call. The huge buildup in oil inventories we are seeing could also help a touch as fuel prices go down. I think stitchfix #s are pretty good long term and the drop in price is probably due to speculators bailing once they saw revenue growth decline slightly YoY. This would be a good time to pick up some shares at a pretty good discount. They are expanding and I think this will only help to drive growth in the future as they add more market share. Another thing is with the stock price lower it could now be a target for acquisition as well. -

I would usually say the same thing as your uncle to be honest. That said, it really depends on what your investments are earmarked for. If you are in it for the long term than you dont really have much to worry about and can ride this out, and probably profit off some dollar cost averaging. If your time horizon for the monies is shorter than i would definitely suggest working with your adviser to try to diversify your equity positions or perhaps even add some high yield fixed income (outside of North America). I have to admit though I am one that is in for the long term as are most of my clients so I tend to take pretty long positions and make small tactical moves here and there as opposed to trying to time the market. While profits may not be as large, it does take a lot of the guess work out of it and definitely helps limit losses through rough periods. -

Yeah wowza.... Just the start I believe... I see CAT did try to (somewhat successfully) ease concerns in their call by saying all the added costs were still manageable. 3M is getting hit by both the tariffs and the slowdown of the Chinese economy which is even more troubling.. Youre absolutely right about the indices. Everything will eventually catch up no matter how much one praises the economy. Fundamentals matter. -

Im still trying to figure out (after seeing it referenced in many many posts all over the forums) when fascism moved from the far far right to the left of the political spectrum... Just for context; apparently ANTIFA (anti-fascists) are leftists but so are fascists now. So the left is against itself?? -

The main thing that will play out over the next few weeks and really drive the market will be the earnings reports from the big companies (Amazon, Intel etc). If those disappoint or miss then you can expect it to get quite a bit worse as they will weigh the market down quite a bit. With tariffs making a lot of materials more expensive for those companies in the US on top of interest rate rises making it tougher to carry/issue debt, I wouldnt be surprised to see firms revise forecasts from earlier. -

I believe you are correct as if they were driving that would open them up to criminal charges as opposed to just a ticket... Same with alcohol.
